Where will this end?

The White House say they have a list of 75 countries who have negotiated with Trump on tariffs. They won't release the list though.

hmm

Wyllow3 Fri 11-Apr-25 01:04:01

I wonder why not...

Jane43 Fri 11-Apr-25 01:42:57

China are going to restrict the number of American films released, they are the world’s second largest market for films.

Democrats are more likely than Republicans to say they've heard a lot about the tariffs (73% vs. 53%)

Makes you wonder if Republicans are less likely to follow the news and read widely. Perhaps explains their ability to let the stuff that worries many people about Trump pass under their radar.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 11-Apr-25 09:40:26

China raises the stakes - tariffs now at 125%.

I was reading this morning that China supplies USA with the majority of 73% smart phones,78% laptops and 87% video consoles.

People in USA are not going to be very happy as the shelves empty out.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 11-Apr-25 09:41:07

Trump doesn’t know what he is doing.

Interesting article. It's quite significant, isnt it.
Other similar targets are no doubt out there.

but its all so ludicrous. Trump determined Chinese will come and crawl, the likelihood of China doing that?

Or will it all depend on stock markets again and pressure on Trump to back down with some kind of face saving story.

MayBee70 Fri 11-Apr-25 10:50:57

It’s back of a fag packet politics.

David49 Fri 11-Apr-25 11:00:36

At this rate Tariffs will be 500% in a month

I really think Trump has overplayed his hand it’s going to be very difficult to win a trade war, or any other kind of war against China.

I envisage it being written on a golf ball in indelible ink! The danger is that the ball will be landing in a bunker, or worse, in the water.

MayBee70 Fri 11-Apr-25 11:05:36

If Trumps balls land in a bunker his staff replace them with another one outside of the bunker. It’s why he is leading player at so many of his golf courses. He thinks that cheating is an acceptable way of winning.

Precisely, and China's main import from the US is bulk foodstuffs, soy, corn, wheat - all items readily available from a range of alternative suppliers. Canada, Russia, Ukraine, Brazil, Argentina, India, Mexico

All the cards are in Chinese hands, and they know how to play them.

That just about sums him and it up!

It makes me think of a non-litterate/non-numerate toddler, just spouting a series of familiar-sounding numbers that sound impressive to them, but with zero understanding of what those sounds actually mean.
Truly scary from someone in Trump's position of power

I quite agree. Very scary

Trump taking on China is like the US taking on Vietnam- they will lose. Especially with Russia aligned against them as a well. God help us all because we will be dragged down too.

Wyllow3 Fri 11-Apr-25 12:16:00

Well Russia hasn't declared support for China but this article from Russian news sources gives a picture of consequences. However the bessie mate Trump/Putin picture around Ukraine is likely to be seriously disrupted

"U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs notably do not include Russia or its neighbor Belarus.

In the short term, Russia may be able to capitalize on the escalating trade war by replacing U.S. energy supplies to China. But the Kremlin is unlikely to significantly benefit from the tariffs in the longer term — especially as they may lead to a global economic slowdown that cuts into demand for Russian oil and gas."

www.themoscowtimes.com/2025/04/03/will-russia-come-out-a-winner-in-trumps-trade-wars-a88238

By the way, do have a peep at the article even if you dont read it - there is a very funny image of Trump and Putin riding together on lions from a Russian souvenir shop on a mug 😂😂😂

“U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs notably do not include Russia or its neighbor Belarus.”

No, that’s because there are trade sanctions in place along with a few other states

Ive answered your last post when you flagged this erroneous idea.

Russia exports over $3bn to USA every year.

Sanctions relate to political actions.

The two are apples and pears and are not related.

I don't think Trump has a hope in hell of outwitting or beating the Chinese.. Let's hope he listens to his advisors.. unlikely though

How does that work when China imports 3 times as much into the US as the US exports to China.
Who is dependent on who?

They exclusively watch Fox News. They aren't being told much of this on purpose.

Who is dependent on who?

You have to look at what is traded and whether it can easily be replaced, also how easily the respective governments will find it in relation to their voting population.

That will tell you all you need to know.

It isn't just about trading though. China is expanding it's territories exponentially and is much more sneaky and covert politically than USA

I expected some imports, in 2020 it was over $ 25bn
The UK also has some imports around £500m last year that’s pretty much in proportion to US trade with Russia
The UK tariff on Russian goods is 35%

Tariffs and sanctions both control goods being traded, there is little point having tariffs if sanctions prevent trade

Many other countries have little or no restrictions
