Just saw the EU is going to allow China's electric vehicles as a response to Trump. I have not researched this yet.
Our son’s brother-in-law recently went to China on business and visited the BYD factory which manufactures electric cars. He was absolutely blown away by it, the site is bigger than San Francisco.

I don't think Trump has a hope in hell of outwitting or beating the Chinese.. Let's hope he listens to his advisors.. unlikely though
How does that work when China imports 3 times as much into the US as the US exports to China.
Who is dependent on who?
China has a huge internal market that could be expanded with the right measures, there are also other overseas markets that could be expanded. Yes, China would take hit, but they have done it before and bounced back. The Chinese government does not have to worry about its electorate and being driven out of government
China also owns arounf $800billion Us Treasury Bonds. A large sell off of those, could cause major problems for the USA.
In addition what China exports mainly from the USA is basic food stuffs - wheat, corn and soy. There are plenty of alternative sources for those crops.
The USA needs its high tech imports from China far more than China needs to sell to them, and it has no need to buy from the USA

I think it is difficult for most people, even in the US, to understand how many products sold in the US is made in China. There is no way we can just not buy Chinese made goods on such a large scale without being given time to actually move manufacturing to the US. Even if he fast tracks building regulations, which he will and put people at risk, we would not be able to replace most of our goods in less than 2 years.
Until then, we are at the whim of a dictator and forced to pay 145% for goods we cant make here currently.
Wont necessarily be 145%
Depends what sellers want to price in. Whether they want to pass on the full extra cost. or not.
Plus some goods will only be part made from China.
All not good though.

Gosh
15% of China's exports go to the USA,
I think it was decided, either earlier on this thread, or another thread that the figure is 4%. Some were saying lower.

China is all about "Face".
Trump will not win the trade war with China!
Good point.

The 4% was exports to the USA as a proportion of China's GDP, (Gross Domestic Product) that is a 4% is the proportion of everything China produces that goes to the USA. This includes Hong Kong as well.
Here is a link to an article that explains it very well and has an interesting table of which Chinese industries will be most affected by the tariff www.caixabankresearch.com/en/economics-markets/activity-growth/exposure-chinese-economy-us-tariff-hike
Oooh that is interesting.
I was surprised you being out of step with other posters. As you do normally know what is what with this type of thing.
The Bond market is what spooked him and caused the 90 say pause on tariffs. It was a sell off at the same time the stocks were tanking.
90% of Apple iPhones are assembled in China and then shipped back to the US. In the US the iPhone 16 ranges from $800 to $1100 depending on storage.
So add on 145% tariff US consumers will be fuming ...
I can't see Apple taking the hit. Their shares have nose-dived.

Sounds like it.
Things went too far, even for him.
It won't be easy for ordinary working Americans . Tariffs will push up prices, DOGE's unelected goons are putting so may folk out of work, and now the Republicans are attempting to gut Medicare. And yet, he still has support.
And what about that tariff pause and the message 'Its a good time to buy'. The Art of the Insider Trading Deal?
Just for laughs.

In the United States, there are an estimated 155 million iPhone users as of 2024. Is there a need for even more phones?

Apple dont just ship all their I phones from China to the USA. Just done aa check. They distribute them to centres world wide including the UK.
the same for Mac books etc
"Yes, Apple often ships MacBooks and other products directly from China to the UK. This is due to the efficiency of Apple's supply chain and the fact that many of their products are assembled in China.
Apple may lose out in the USA but likely to concentrate on wherever they can sell!

Indeed.
How many phones are needed, what is saturation point?
When I need to upgrade my very, very old I phone then......
Actually I try to get a second hand one from the sort of users who upgrade for fashions.
Tariff concerns.

People like thier phones and weren't happy about this I guess. He blinked again.
"Smartphones and computers are among many tech devices and components that will be exempted from reciprocal tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, according to new guidance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The guidance, issued late Friday evening, comes after Trump earlier this month imposed 145% tariffs on products from China, a move that threatened to take a toll on tech giants like Apple
, which makes iPhones and most of its other products in China."

But people do need to replace phones occasionally. My 12 year old phone is on its last legs and beginning to irritate me because it's so slow and has hardly any battery life left. It's not compatible with many useful apps.
Just realised that mine is a Samsung and I have my eye on another Samsung, which is made in Vietnam or India, but probably uses some Chinese-made components. I wonder how that would work, if I were buying from the US.
