Hopefully this helps those who haven't already seen it.

But hey ho, let's develop a theme park in Bedford - not too far from the leafy South East, eh?

Casdon Sat 12-Apr-25 20:59:25

Anniebach

South Wales is dead, I was born in South Wales, ironworks, steelworks, factories, coal mines, all gone, moved back 2 years ago, such poverty

I know Anniebach, you only need to go over Storey Arms, and it’s a different world. Previously seen as backwaters, our small rural towns are the lucky ones now.

I suppose people can do Chessington and Legoland at the same time hmm sad

Casdon yes, I was born one side of Storey Arms, moved other side and now moved back , such history here,

Would you rather it wasn’t there? Where would you put it?
Attractions such as this need good infrastructure so that visitors can get there.
So, rail and road links are important, not to mention airports. Good for Bedfordshire!

Are you really surprised, Blinko? I suspect not grin

Sheffield? Ex steel producing area, pretty much in the middle of the UK, easily accessible, good road and rail links, needs employment opportunities, and plenty of people could commute there. NB I have no vested interest in Sheffield, I just looked at a map of the UK.

J52 Sat 12-Apr-25 21:22:43

Yes Sheffield would have been a possibility, I have friends who live there.

Why not Bedfordshire? It’s in the middle thereabouts of England with good transport links as J52 says and a derelict site of the right size.

How is Sheffield, Yorkshire, in the middle of the country?

Oreo Sat 12-Apr-25 21:32:32

Don’t let’s go down the dreary North/South divide route.

How is Sheffield, Yorkshire, in the middle of the country?

It’s more central than Bedford though.

Oreo Sat 12-Apr-25 21:34:33

Everywhere in the south Midlands ,south east, isn’t leafy btw and there are loads of people needing jobs, the theme park will be brilliant for the area.

Depends on your point of view and where you live.

Oreo Sat 12-Apr-25 21:35:57

Anyway it’s not going to Sheffield so a moot point.

Middle of the UK, not middle of England.

I see 😄
It has to be in England tho, to make the maximum amount of money.

Casdon Sat 12-Apr-25 21:51:21

Being a saddo, I just looked it up. The centre of mainland GB is actually 4 km north west of Calderstones Hospital near Clitheroe, Lancashire. The mainland result confirmed the findings of analogue experiments carried out by a Brigadier Winterbotham, reported in the Geographical Journal in 1941. (ordnance Survey result).

Oreo Sat 12-Apr-25 22:14:51

Being an equal saddo😄 I looked up the centre of England, its at Fenny Drayton Leicestershire.
So now we know.

Oreo Sat 12-Apr-25 22:15:57

We can go to bed happy😂

Casdon Sat 12-Apr-25 22:23:00

Fenny Drayton does sound very lovely to be fair, though I’ve no idea if it is in reality.

Bedford is also reasonably convenient for tourists from mainland Europe. If it's built, there's going to be a major upgrade to the Oxford-Cambridge routes and Bedford will be convenient for that.

PS. I agree with others - Sheffield would have been good.

I agree. Bedford has some pockets of real deprivation and it's just north of Luton, which has a high unemployment rate.

Iam64 Sun 13-Apr-25 11:06:18

Blackpool 🌞. Its pleasure beach is losing money. It’s one of the most deprived areas in the country. Crying out for investment (and drug/alcohol/mental health services )

I was wondering why the sudden rush to take control of the steel works.

First I read that the Chinese owners had been locked out of the site and had been turned away by police.

Then I read that if there was no fuel for the burners and they went out it would be next to impossible to re start them.

Then I read that the fuel was being shipped snd on the high seas and the Chinese owners were trying to sell it before it reached the U.K. which would have meant disaster for the works.

Now I understand the urgency of it all😊.

Lesson

Don’t trust the Chinese.
