I just ran across this article that is a really good read on this topic if anyone is interested. A good look at one side of the discussion.

That’s a very good article that expresses my POV. Thank you, I’maround.

As for ‘accomplished’ women - what does that even mean? If you haven’t been given/bought a ticket to ride, does that mean you’re unaccomplished?

MOnica you think those women were bought to satisfy the sexual desires of a wealthy man, your choice , your view on women , I do not share it . End of

Of course I didn't. It sufficient just to show his pulling power to be able to collecct those women, dress them in suitably designed suits, some or all paying for themselves - and then stand back and say - no he didn't need to say, - Let the publicity do it for him.

I think I am just amused that anyone could think that pulling a silly stunt like this says or does anything for him, but then I am not Donald Trump, Elon Musk et al so do not know how they think.

Please define 'pulling power' - I'm unable to discern meaning.

Accomplished by education, work, talent in their chosen fields.

Why not? I bet it was an amazing experience, and her fare contributed to the cost of the mission. Good for her I say.

Do you really thing she paid, much more likely just a huge publicity event for those who run these tourist trips surely?!

Barrygirl Fri 18-Apr-25 13:52:46

Amanda Nguyen who was one of the "gals" was an exception: she is an astronaut in training who was nominated for a Nobel Prize 2019 - she previously suspended her space training when she was raped and went on to draft the Sexual Assault Survivors' Rights Act which was passed unanimously through the United States Assembly. We should applaud her - she also carried out experiments during the few short minutes she was in space.

SueDonim Fri 18-Apr-25 13:57:05

My definition of accomplished is broader. I think the world is full of accomplished women. The woman I know who has cared for and advocated for her severely disabled child for a quarter of a century. A friend who was born without lower limbs but never let it stop her from doing what she wanted is accomplished. A single mother who has raised a family of wonderful children despite impoverishment has accomplished an admirable thing.

Indeed.

Also in the 'crew" "Aisha Bowe is a former NASA rocket scientist, entrepreneur, and global STEM advocate. She is the CEO of STEMBoard, an engineering firm twice named to the Inc. 5000 list, and founder of LINGO, an edtech company aiming to equip one million students with essential tech skills."

She was married to Russell Brand for a couple of years

Personally, I am not sure how I feel about one of the richest men in the world paying for 7 women, chosen for their looks and desirability, in specially designed body flattering space suits to take a short trip into the sky as the optimal hen night for his fiancee.

Speaks to me more of very rich men jockeying for position in a male pecking order, in competition with Musk et al. both on technology and being able to collect together 7 women to take the ride. A bit like a harem.

Amanda Nguyen is a bioastronautics research scientist and activist. She put her astronautics career on hold to work extremely hard for many years to ensure a change in laws relating to rape both in the US and internationally. Amazing woman.

Grantanow Fri 18-Apr-25 14:07:22

Hardly astronauts. They were not managing the flight nor did they have mission tasks. More like an expensive hen do.

Galton Fri 18-Apr-25 14:13:50

I think it was Gayle King that got out of the capsule and said 'thank you Jesus'. My thoughts at the time were similar. Very brave. I would rather stick pins in my eyes than go up in a rocket any day.

Wealth.
And not just an expensive pts car nowadays, a space rocket is the in thing to attract the girls, dontchya kno.

So many women have achieved and achieve so much on daily basis, from women like those SueDonim describes to those space scientists and pioneers who do deserve the description of astronaut.

Behind every astronaut is a team which includes women who
may never get the chance to go to space themselves.

Allira Fri 18-Apr-25 14:16:51

Excuse typos.
Never mind space travel, could some scientist please invent a stylus which works!

Are you saying 'pulling power' is merely wealth?

This is a discussion about money?

The women who paid were somehow impressed by wealth?

I think they wanted the experience, I'd love to be able to pay for such.

Allira Fri 18-Apr-25 14:40:33

Sometimes the lack of SOH on GN is worrying.

HarryTigger Fri 18-Apr-25 15:14:24

Glad it's not just me!

4allweknow Fri 18-Apr-25 15:25:45

And, the personalities have been referred to as spacecraft crew! Passengers, tourists perhaps but crew, no way. They had two hours instruction and I'd guess that would be best way to put on safety gear to limit spoiling makeup for emergency landing.

RosieandherMaw Fri 18-Apr-25 15:36:10

Two women were on there who absolutely deserve recognition, though, of course, they aren't the ones getting any. Amanda Nguyen and Aisha Bowe are both amazing women in STEM and in other areas of life. They both have worked for NASA. Amanda Nguyen has also worked hard to get legislation passed protecting sexual assault survivors, both in the United States and at the UN. She's the real deal!

Littlebea02 Fri 18-Apr-25 15:40:22

Hen do that is very very cool!

I would go in a heartbeat I wish I could do you know it’s I think 200,000 pounds to go up but hey Housing my granddaughter couldn’t go to college LOL. Next lifetime😂

Littlebea02 Fri 18-Apr-25 15:41:15

Do not know where Housing came from forgive me😱

Nana49 Fri 18-Apr-25 15:50:07

Yeah this is money well spent. She could have gifted the money to starving, those who have suffered war crimes, basically the marginalised.
What an absolute waste of resources. How selfish are they to spend money on that (probably costing at least a million).
Don't even mention the carbon emissions. Christ how depressing.

They deserve recognition for brilliant accomplishments.

The more people who read about them the better!

I think the rocket 🚀 ship was designed by Ann Summers

knspol Fri 18-Apr-25 16:44:37

Her money, her choice, don't really care. More interested in the findings that may mean there's life on another planet!

Yes, DH mentioned that but I've seen nothing about it on the news.

'Life, Jim, but not as we know it?'

(Yes, I know it's a misquote)
