Why? If Zoom calls were good enough in Lockdown then why does she need to go in person to be rubbished by Donald Trump?

I hope she's flying Economy and staying in a Travelodge..........

PamelaJ1 Wed 23-Apr-25 06:55:59

A Travelodge is total luxury compared to Motel6!
Cut her some slack though. I’d rather be doing what I’m doing over here than being over there with that bunch and I bet she would too!
Also bear in mind that he’d probably raise our tariffs if she didn’t go.

Negotiations with Trump and his acolytes is hardly a “jolly”.

Mamie Wed 23-Apr-25 07:15:42

I think a UK Chancellor of the Exchequer meeting the US Secretary of the Treasury is fairly normal procedure, especially when discussing a potential Trade Deal.
I don't understand why it needs such an unpleasant thread title.

tanith Wed 23-Apr-25 07:53:21

Because Face to face in such crucial negotiations such as trade deals is essential IMO.

Plus you don’t want to look like the poor relation with the begging bowl.

As soon as I saw this...I know who the OP would be!

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 23-Apr-25 08:38:06

It's her job.

Grandmabatty Wed 23-Apr-25 08:40:35

NannyJan me too!

keepingquiet Wed 23-Apr-25 09:23:06

Nothing compared to Sunak and his love of jet travel...she's just doing her job.

Churchview Wed 23-Apr-25 09:24:36

Always baffles me when people say politicians or the royal family are 'on a jolly'.

Day after day of back to back meetings and interminable dinners with the sort of people you wouldn't want in your sitting room, long haul travel, time away from friends, family and the comforts of your own home is not my idea of a jolly.

I can only imagine the kind of people who say things like this have never been away for business.

Grannybags Wed 23-Apr-25 09:25:20

I agree - she's just doing her job

MaizieD Wed 23-Apr-25 09:29:10

I'm just appalled that our government is trying for a trade deal with Trump's US.

I wonder what 'conditions' they are prepared to accept...

Casdon Wed 23-Apr-25 09:37:42

I’m sure she’d much rather be at home with her children in their school holidays, she is just doing her job. I don’t envy her at all, and I’m surprised that you do mae13.

AGAA4 Wed 23-Apr-25 09:46:23

Reeves must have had to brace herself to meet Trump. Who would want to? I don't envy her or think she will be enjoying this trip at all.

eazybee Wed 23-Apr-25 10:02:48

I don't object to her trip; this sounds like Work, and Hard Work too. She needs to be there, and I don't think three days is excessive even if she does travel in a luxury jet; she will need all her wits about her with that shower.

nanna8 Wed 23-Apr-25 10:12:45

I don’t think there will be much jolly about it.I think, for once, she is doing her job properly and conscientiously. Hope she gets good results for you all.

Just so.

Oreo Wed 23-Apr-25 10:33:21

I don’t envy her the trip, and tbh I don’t think she’ll get anywhere with soft soaping Trump, ugh! That brings to mind a horrible picture😄😖
He won’t row back particularly on the 25% tariffs and am not sure that accepting deals on trade with the US will do much for our economy anyway.

henetha Wed 23-Apr-25 11:01:43

Diplomacy is important. She's doing the right thing and probably not looking forward to it.

Oldbat1 Wed 23-Apr-25 11:43:04

Not a jolly by any stretch of anyones imagination.

My thoughts too! Not my idea of fun.
Keep your cool, Rachel.

Rather her than me 😀

Allira Wed 23-Apr-25 11:47:48

Ps I don't think Trump will like her. She's not had a facelift, nor pumped up lips nor long flowing locks. She looks too business-like for him, not like a bimbo.

Ilovecheese Wed 23-Apr-25 12:10:00

I don’t blame her for going, but, I don't really want a trade agreement with the US if that means too many compromises .

Parsley3 Wed 23-Apr-25 12:25:19

mae13 Trump and his acolytes wouldn't negotiate with a man who didn't wear a suit so do you think they would be up for negotiating with a woman who didn't bother to turn up in person?
