Israel to "conquer" Gaza
(1001 Posts)"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the population of Gaza will be displaced to the south after his security cabinet approved an expanded military operation in the enclave that a minister described as a plan to “conquer” the territory.
The vote on Sunday came hours after the military said it would mobilize tens of thousands of reservists, strengthening its capacity to operate in the besieged Palestinian territory.
“One thing will be clear: there will be no in-and-out,” Netanyahu said in a Monday video message posted on X. “We’ll call up reserves to come, hold territory — we’re not going to enter and then exit the area, only to carry out raids afterward. That’s not the plan. The intention is the opposite.”
The plan would be implemented after US President Donald Trump’s visit to the Middle East next week to “provide a window of opportunity” for a hostage deal, the official added
"The plan then, is to displace Gaza’s entire population to the south of the enclave, following which the total the blockade of humanitarian aid may be lifted, the official said, adding that the military “will remain in every area it captures.”"

^I'm not sure, even if they had the means, how UN peacekeeping troops could be involved without becoming targets for both Israel and Hamas?^
I hope this is the beginning of the end and that UN peacekeepers, aid workers could take over to maintain peace. Would Israel dare to target UN border patrols?
No but hamas would.
The BBC has been blatantly biased against Israel for a long time now. They also prefaced any mention of hamas as being a proscribed terrorist group by the UK ( but not by the BBC obvs)
As for Jeremy Bowen!
The UN !
The only way Israel can make sure that aid doesn’t fall into the hands of hamas is to guard and distribute it themselves.
That way not only do the civilians get the aid, it’s being given by Israel and not hamas taking credit for it.
I don't think that the BBC shows anti Israeli bias. Infact it's always very careful not to.
Come off it.
The BBC commissioned itself to investigate numerous complaints regarding the notoriously biased Jeremy Bowen.
I wonder why?
“Show me a singe article where it criticises Netanyahu”
The features it broadcasts are universally critical of Netenyahu, they may not have written them but it does promote them.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ced227p84n4o
This is the article, and you can see it has a number of sources including a kidney specialist.
I do not think that because the UN reported the 14.000 incorrectly it therefore discredits every UN report
on the ground that draws on local examples.
Attempts to discredit all UN or BBC reports are in danger of silencing news that needs to come out.
And that has always included news about hostages and feelings in Israel about hostages and suffering there.

On the BBC I player front page today there are 2 main articles on the shootings of Israelis in the US in the main section,
And further down, "Gaza's fear of shutting down of water plants".
From the U.N.

I disagree that the bbc has been blatantly pro palistinian.
Presenters always prefaced every news report with the fact that we regard Hamas as terrorists.
There has always been a reluctance to criticise Israel, whatever they do, because of past history, until now. This has now changed and will no longer be the case in future.
The BBC reported the claim, and then reported the correction as soon as it was revealed.
I very much disagree David it has had full coverage. It is not its job to criticise either Netanyahu or Hamas, its job is to present accounts of events and always gives where a report originates from.
Show me a single article where it defends Hamas
Show me a singe article where it criticises Netanyahu
The BBC has been blatantly pro Palestine very little criticism of Hamas.

Why the "BBC of all places"? They are often first to the news if you catch up regularly on I player because they have correspondents in Jerusalem and best informal links possible within Gaza, as seen in the photo of the demonstrations in the article - I posted it last night on the aid thread within 2 hours of it happening
"BBC reports

Yes - pictures and report from 2 hours ago

yet Israel is bombing the area where protests are taking place. FGS its a chance to make peace"
BBC coverage is excellent and not biased.
Seriously?
No doubt Wyllow you have seen this on the other thread but it clearly needs posting here -
The UN has been forced to correct a claim that 14000 children could die in 48 hours.
The UN says this was in fact a projected figure of severe malnutrition over the next year assuming there is no increase in aid.
Picked up and unchecked by BBC Radio 4 and widely reported from then on. The BBC has now conceded that this was a "misrepresentation of a humanitarian report". The corporation issued a correction to it's claim but buried it in a long article about Gazan aid.
I post this as a balance - not in any way to demonstrate any personal bias. Like many, I am appalled at the situation. One dead child is one too many.
It does however show the rate at which incorrect, unchecked reporting by an allegedly non-biased organisation is picked up and run with by major worldwide reporting platforms.
And believed by so many.

Good question about the UN
As far as I understand, the UN is the main channel to provide aid working alongside the Red Cross and other groups. They provide security for aid trucks
But in terms of peacekeeping and peacekeeping troops and why not in Gaza, I suspect they are stretched too far in other conflicts? I had to look it up but "Specifically, they operate in countries like the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Western Sahara, and Abyei. Other active operations include the Golan, Lebanon, Cyprus, Kosovo, and India/Pakistan, according to the United Nations.
I'm not sure, even if they had the means, how UN peacekeeping troops could be involved without becoming targets for both Israel and Hamas?
Not UN troops because they never have to brief to “enforce” compliance, that aside the UN has been facilitating Hamas the whole time.
The truth is that nobody wants the job of policing Gaza, my guess is that Israel will have to do it themselves, possibly with an independant mediator. Once control is established Israel has to have the power to put down any terrorist activity with the community.

The tide is turning against Hamas and the Israeli government. Ministers like Ben Gvir and others who have said they want to "cleanse Gaza of all it's citizens" should not be in charge of Israel.
A former IDF commander has spoken out against strongly them
The Gaza government want to kill all Jews
Ben Gvir is part of the Israeli government and wants to kill Palestinians.
In case you've missed it, Palestinians are demonstrating against their government.

I noticed the bbc remark too and thought it strange.

Palestinians have taken to the streets in southern Gaza for a third day to protest against Hamas.
I applaud them for their bravery in demonstrating their feelings as I applaud Jews of theirs, when they also have the courage to speak out against the violence in Palistine in both gaza and the West Bank.
I applaud their bravery too.
Out with Hamas leadership and with Netanyahu too.
These terrorists and despots are a constant throughout history - ordinary people suffer. The planet is rarely without war somewhere. What is the point of the UN?
Gazans havnt had an opportunity to vote since 2006, so Hamas is all they have had fir 20 years. Pretty much as long as Netanyahu in Israel.
They are obviously angry with Hamas especially now when tens of thousands of Gazans have been killed and many thousands more seriously injured. In any war it’s always the people who suffer.
I applaud them for their bravery in demonstrating their feelings as I applaud Jews of theirs, when they also have the courage to speak out against the violence in Palistine in both gaza and the West Bank.
The hostages were set to be released early March and had Israel kept to their agreement they would be home where they belong. I can only guess what their families are thinking.
My thoughts are with all that are suffering.
Is the tide changing in Gaza defiant stance from Hamas. From BBC of all places
Palestinians have taken to the streets in southern Gaza for a third day to protest against Hamas.
Hundreds of demonstrators were seen in videos posted on social media calling for an end to the war and for the removal of the armed group from Gaza. "Out! Out! Out! All of Hamas, out!" they chanted.
Speaking out against Hamas can be dangerous in Gaza and threats circulated on journalists' WhatsApp groups on Tuesday, forbidding them from publishing any "negative news that could affect the morale of the people".
Activists said young people started the protests on Monday and were joined by others on their way to get food from community kitchens, who were still holding their pots.
The protesters directed their anger at Hamas's leadership after an interview with senior official Sami Abu Zuhri circulated on social media.
Speaking on a podcast which originally aired in late March, he said that the war with Israel was "eternal", adding: "We will rebuild the houses and produce dozens more babies for each martyr."
Videos from the protests in Khan Younis show young men criticizing Hamas for selling their "blood for a dollar… To those with Hamas, be aware the people of Gaza will dig your grave".
