Asking them why they want to come to England. One guy says he is coming because we will give him money and a house., he thinks we are all rich people.

Casdon are the 350,000 plus Ukrainians included in those figures?

The majority of Ukrainian refugees had arrived in 2022 GrannyGravy13, there were small numbers only by 2024. Here’s the Migration Observatory overview.

What Starmer needs to do is get a great, and active, media and communications person, to post every day what actions this govt is taking in all areas, then perhaps people would shush for a day or two

I do agree that this government is lacking in the publicity and media department.

Yes I really agree with this point.

His idea of getting on quietly with government without the fuss and hyperbole we’ve been subjected to over the past decade is playing into the hands of the right wing media.

He needs an AC!😊

Honestly, it’s like Groundhog Day!

Number 1) many migrants DO stay in France and other countries.

Number 2) until (& if) International Law changes ALL asylum seekers are able to choose ANY county in which to claim asylum AND have to be in that country to make the claim.
Number 3) The UK IS a rich country compared to many!
Number 4) Many have (tentative) links to the UK and speak English.

It’s sooooo boring coming on here every day and seeing the same old, same old!

Honestly, people claim all the boats are full to overflowing with fit young men, then in the next breath claim they block our hospitals, GPs and schools? Hardly likely if they are all fit, young men!

Please get a different hobby!

If it bores you don’t continue to read?
Both legal immigration and illegal immigration’s now out of control and at long last the government of the day is prepared to say so and commit to doing something about it.It may be that they fail but we just have to hope that they succeed as it just cannot go on this way.

Search engines on line give many detailed reasons the French police can’t/don’t intervene.

Some reports suggest French police have used aggressive tactics, pulling boats back or puncturing them, which could endanger the lives of those on board.

Under International law , France and other parties have raised concerns that returning migrants at sea may violate international law.

France is now changing the policy of not being able to enter the water, or so I have read.

It’s my understanding Starmer is doing his damndest to negotiate with France, without parting with anymore £££££m, to reach mutual agreements on asylum seekers,

GrannyGravy13 Wed 14-May-25 08:42:54

The thing that really gets me cross is that French Police are watching people on overcrowded boats attempt to cross one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.

They are as culpable for any deaths but their inactions as the disgusting people traffickers.

What Starmer needs is to stop pandering to Reform.

The language used in his ‘introduction’ to the White Paper is utterly appalling. It takes us straight to the anti immigration rhetoric of Enoch Powell, repeats all the misinformation people have been fed by right wing media and insults the immigrants and descendants of immigrants who contribute to the economy and well being of the country.

He should be lambasting the perpetrators of these lies and distortions of the effects of immigration, not pandering to them.

I don’t know who thought these were appropriate things for a Labour PM to say. Whoever it is needs to go. A once proud and honourable party is being dragged into the gutter.

I agree but I’m
Also not too sure what the French Police are empowered to do.

They believe what the gangs tell them. They fill their heads with promises of a house, a job and money when they get here. Seeing what they are leaving behind, most would jump at the chance.

Keir Starmer has completely changed his previously held views on migration. I feel there is a correlation between his statement and Reforms recent showings in the by-elections.

He needs to tackle those coming here under the radar instead of those who want to live here and work and contribute to our economy.

The bottom line is it is too late. Tony Blair's Open Door was a disaster for this country and it's continued to go downhill from there. The UK, sadly, is going to the dogs and this latest plan like all the others is unlikely to be implemented and so it goes on.

You are quite right, it is too late.

I totally understand your response and to a certain extent agree with it.

However, things have moved on quite a bit since the (disgusting) Enoch Powell and his awful rhetoric.

I think controlled immigration is a sensible move, we certainly are a richer country for our mixed ethnicity, but we are also a small island with limited resources. It’s not Reform persay who are the issue, more the nasty and extreme right wing beliefs they’ve brought out in too large a proportion of voters.

Farage is a manipulative divisive player who is currently asking high, 🙏🙏 something or someone brings him back to earth with a very nasty bump!

Didn’t we go through all this on another thread (or even this one) very recently?

As I understand it the French police are not allowed to enter the water to restrain people or prevent the boats moving away but this rule has now changed or is in the process of changing and they will be able to get their feet wet.

Or did I just dream that I read it here on Gnet?

They would be acting against international law.

This

“there are concerns that French police tactics used to prevent asylum seekers from reaching the UK may violate international law, particularly regarding the principles of non-refoulement and non-discrimination. Some reports indicate that French police have used aggressive tactics, including stabbing boats and deploying tear gas, to prevent crossings, raising concerns about the safety and human rights of those seeking asylum”

As I have always understood the Refugee Convention 1951 to which we and all Europeans have signed up to, entitles an asylum seeker to choose whichever country he/she wishes to claim asylum and refugee status.m

Jeez, Cossy. Are you saying that disgusting rhetoric about immigration is now acceptable?

We can lay the blame for our perceived immigration problem at the feet of Labour and tory governments as much as we like, but demonising immigrants who are in no way to blame is entirely unacceptable.

There’s a regular poster here, who lives in France and recounted recently that she takes French lessons with a few African immigrants to France who really wanted to get to the UK but were stopped from leaving by French authorities. They confidently told her that if they could reach the UK they would be given a house, a car, and a job.
