I know that under current international laws that the French Police are prohibited from entering the water.
Does that give them leeway to watch from their cars in the sand dunes whilst they are running through the dunes and along the beach without doing anything?
How many people have to drown before this situation is sorted?

Shocking report GB News 9-11 pm tonight
(228 Posts)Hundreds and hundreds of young men living in tents inside huge hangar at Calais. Tents everywhere and it stinks. Patrick Christys reporting.
Asking them why they want to come to England. One guy says he is coming because we will give him money and a house., he thinks we are all rich people.
It was sorted pre-Brexit. The number of small boats could be counted on one hand.

Yes! It’s been awful, the deaths from drowning and crushing, it’s the main reason this should be stopped asap and safe ways of claiming asylum implemented and claims processed very quickly.

But thanks to Cameron’s blunder and the likes of Farage, we are here!

What Starmer needs to do is get a great, and active, media and communications person, to post every day what actions this govt is taking in all areas, then perhaps people would shush for a day or two
👏👏👏

As I posted upthread they arrived by different means, usual commercial vehicles which were not checked whilst we were in the EU
Surely you can remember the mainstream news bulletins showing the migrants on the roads, climbing the fences, breaking in and entering container lorries (all before GB News)
Too much red tape about what the French police can and cannot do. They should be able to stop the people leaving safety to go on a perilous journey where many don't get to the other shore. It's inhumane to just watch them set sail without doing anything.

That is correct. French maritime law prevents the police from putting their feet in the water.
They do , however, issue severe warnings about meteorological conditions and heavy traffic in the Channel, but advice is ignored by the immigrants.
I’m sure this must have been discussed and mulled over, but none of these people are French so France are no better at protecting or monitoring their own borders as us.
Surely looking at these AS routes and attempting to intercept them BEFORE they reach the channel would be an option?
Maybe they could have their claims partially assessed at that point?
I don’t the answer, does anyone?
It’s not just a UK issue/problem so surely some form of international panel/working party is required and all countries working together?
I have always been in favour of a system that lets would be asylum seekers apply for asylum at our overseas embassies.
This might even stop the destruction of some/all of their papers making the entire process quicker and easier along with cutting out the criminal people trafficking gangs and eliminating the danger and possible drowning to those seeking asylum.
”His idea of getting on quietly with government without the fuss and hyperbole we’ve been subjected to over the past decade is playing into the hands of the right wing media. He needs an AC!😊”
Agreed Iam 👏👏👏
10 years of performative government has led people to believe that a government is only doing something if they’re shouting about it from the rooftops. If they’re getting on with governing quietly people think they’re just sitting in Westminster ‘twiddling their thumbs’!
Why do posters say Starmer should be tackling irregular immigration instead of regular? Just because he’s made an announcement about regular immigration, doesn’t mean the government is no longer addressing ‘irregular’.
A government can do more than one thing at the same time - they’re not only doing the things they’re telling us about at that moment🙈

IIRC France offered to allow the UK to set up a processing facility for asylum seekers at Calais, but the offer was turned down by Brexit Boris.
I'm intrigued by the fact that, despite the constant emphasis on the boats being full of fit young potential terrorists, GB News managed to find some lifejacketless children to emote over... The narrative is always skewed, isn't it?
Immigrants in France awaiting a decision are housed ;
1. In residences social
2.In centres of reception for Roma and the travelling
3.In centres for young workers
They are given a document to say they are in the waiting
system, it only helps them not get arrested
You cannot 'disappear' into the system in France easily
They are not able to work and bus loads are deported regularly.
They are not housed in 4 star hotels with spas paid for by
the tax payer and as usual making the rich richer.
I would love to see the English Bobby allowed to put his
feet in French waters , that way less lives would be lost and less English Pounds paid.

Yes of course I do!
Some points though.
First - there will always be migrants.
Before we left the EU, we had the right to return asylum seekers to the first safe country that they had entered. Thus you had the phenomenon of people trying to enter the U.K. by lorry etc and “disappear”. These people had no intention of claiming asylum.
Once we decided to leave the EU that right was lost, and so the government of the day realising that they had given themselves a massive headache then attempted to close all (what the quite arbitrarily termed) illegal (nothing illegal about it under international law) routes - thus the era of the small boats was born. People arrive claiming asylum.
We have simply shot ourselves in the foot snd given ourselves an intractable and unsolvable problem.

The second half of this post is b….s!
MaixieD I didn’t see the GB News report, I did watch 10pm ITV news which is where I saw the man with a young child on his shoulders being asked if they had a life jacket.
There were lots of young males wading into the water and already on the boat with life jackets.
The news team stayed on the beach for several hours and the already overloaded boat came closer into shore on at least two more occasions to pick up more desperate folk.
If my memory serves me right some people jumped off of the boat and returned as they thought it was overcrowded and far too dangerous.
I sometimes wonder WW if this was deliberately created somehow. The flames of hatred are certainly being fanned.
Whitewavemark2 I am not against immigrants or asylum seekers.
What I am totally against is the people traffickers who play on desperate people, some take their papers away from them and once here they become nothing more than modern day slaves.
There are debt agencies in Asian countries who tell Amalie’s that their only chance is to send a family member to the U.K. to work off their debt the girls end up being held as sexual slaves, young men are held in hideous conditions growing weed.
Countries across the globe are seeing the same problem and situations it is far wider spread than the EU.
Well said WW 👏👏👏
I really would like to hear Starmer, or someone from government, spelling this out in the media.
I suppose their reluctance to do so is because they would have to mention the B word (which still seems to stick in their throats) and acknowledge how it has failed so spectacularly!
Brexit created the age if the small boats!
Not Amalies should be families I wish my iPad didn’t always think it knows better…
That was to WW post 9.44

I am sure anyone with an ounce of humanity is against that sort of exploitation.
However the media frame it, most Asylum Seekers are NOT placed in 4 star hotels with spas!

Of course 👏👏👏
France does have provision in place for immigrant minors on their own, and tries to ensure their safety. I'm not sure whether that is up to 16 or 18 years. The problem is that most immigrants don't have any documentation, so age cannot be proved. If a minor is accompanied, then they are no longer the responsibility of the French police.
