Hundreds and hundreds of young men living in tents inside huge hangar at Calais. Tents everywhere and it stinks. Patrick Christys reporting.

Asking them why they want to come to England. One guy says he is coming because we will give him money and a house., he thinks we are all rich people.

Just let them all come but deport the ‘legal’ ones. Seems to be the go. Jolly good show, a compassionate country.

We're not doing that nanna, what on earth are you talking about? Changes in visa plans are not about deportation but limiting entry.

Upthread, it was suggested irregular arrivals are all terrorists in the making. It's this kind of inflammatory hate talk without evidence that is to wind people up and encourages racism. Where's the evidence.

Absolutely no, we should never ever emulate Trump and his buddies!

Well said WW 👏👏👏

I really would like to hear Starmer, or someone from government, spelling this out in the media.

I suppose their reluctance to do so is because they would have to mention the B word (which still seems to stick in their throats) and acknowledge how it has failed so spectacularly!

Brexit created the age if the small boats!

My late mother was an unashamed racist. She was also against the UK's membership of the EU. Nevertheless, she voted to remain in the EU in the referendum, which baffled me until she told me her reason - she reckoned the UK needed immigrants to do the jobs UK inhabitants didn't want. While the UK was in the EU, eastern Europeans could do the dirty jobs. The reason she didn't want to stop the eastern Europeans was because their jobs would end up being done by black and brown foreigners, which in her view was worse. I can just imagine how smug my mother would be now because it appears she was right.

I think you may have misunderstood.

Legal and “illegal” migration is an issue.
The govt is tackling both, but separately, as they are separate issues and require different solutions.

Surely the French government should be addressing this, not our government.

Surely it should be jointly addressed and jointly stopped!

One guy? Out of hundreds and hundreds?

They are most likely in Calais to survive with hope and safety. Yes, without sanitation stations, humans will stink.

We do not get to choose the families we are born into.

I was commenting as I watched it. They interviewed a lot more later on and there was a large group of Afghans who said if they get to England they will get everything they want. One said his parents are already here and got a house and passport and money.

They all said they were determined to get to England. It was their dream. PC told one that not all English people are rich and we have thousands of homeless people so why did they think we should house and feed them. They just shrugged and said it was still their dream.

Afghans - oh those that had done so much to assist us and we so badly let down and left behind.

Do you mean those Afghans?

Wyllow3 Wed 14-May-25 10:50:15

I think GB new et al are trying to conflate the issues, which only breeds assumptions about the immigrants we need and welcome, and brings hostility to people from different backgrounds who have lived in this country for years and years. "They're all....." etc etc.

I don’t know if we should be addressing it. I’m pretty sure that if this was happening in our country, we would address it and France or whichever country they were attempting to get to, wouldn’t.

Surely the French government should be doing more any which way you look at it.

Absolutely, I’ll never ever forget those heartbreaking photos of people trying to board the last plane leaving and being unable to do so.

We simply left them to their awful fate with the Taliban, especially poor females!

Absolutely!

GB news et al know exactly what they’re doing. Make people think that the government is no longer addressing the issue of irregular immigration but, instead, is ‘deporting’ immigrants who work here and contribute to the country.

That’s not what’s happening, but the right wing propagandists are already peddling their lies and, of course, people will fall for it. Nanna in Oz already has🙈

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 14-May-25 11:38:21

A GB newscast telling us what dreadful people are planning to come here illegally
( not really new "news") but not the new measures being put in place by the government?
Surely not.

Luckygirl3 Wed 14-May-25 12:09:37

Word of advice - avoid GB News.

Word of advice - avoid GB News.

I think most of us do and to be fair, it’s not a genuine news programme, more of a debate and opinion based show.

Word of advice - avoid GB News.

The migrant situation was first up on ITV News at 10 last night, showing overcrowded boat, children without life jackets when the majority of young men had them along with the French Police observing from their vehicle.

It is not just GB News, it is mainstream media also.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 14-May-25 12:43:32

Oops premature posting, I have only watched GB News on a couple of occasions out of curiosity, as I am loath to criticise anything/anyone without checking myself.

I didn’t see the item from the Calais camp, but did see the ITV news one.

The U.K. has resettled (evacuated) over 15,000 Afghans Operation Pitting

A further 29,000 were resettled under the Afghan Resettlement Programme.

An estimated 2,000Afghans who worked for the U.K. including their dependents remain eligible for resettlement in the U.K. under the Afghan Relocation and Assistance Policy scheme but have not yet arrived.

A report by MP’s identified at least another 4,600 Afghans including interpreters and contractors who remain in Afghanistan and may be at risk due to their previous association with U.K.

Hope this is helpful, of course there is more to be done, but credit where credit is due more have been resettled than left behind.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 14-May-25 13:07:36

We were lucky our son returned from Afghanistan others parents were not so fortunate 💐

If we had remained, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

So the moral of the story?

“Be careful what you wish for”

And are gullible enough to believe,

I’m not gullible enough to believe still being in the EU would solve the problem.
Would it make the gendarmes more willing to jump in the water?
Would it stop people wanting to come to the UK by those boats?
Even before Brexit, there were small boat crossings, although according to reports I read, the numbers were not significant enough to bed recorded. Certainly they have risen since 2018, but there is no evidence that this would not have happened anyway. Other countries are suffering from the influx too, though they don’t have a water border.
