I'm pleased that Starmer is showing a bit of positivity on these issues. However, as I said on the other EU thread, it won't be any easy ride. He will have to grovel a bit. Have to wait and see.

The EU is a powerful economic block. It is in a position to insist on certain rules that must be followed in order to benefit from trading with this block.

We were once in this position as a member. We gave that membership up with all the benefits it bestowed.

No. The free movement for young people would be spun as a success, because these young people wouldn’t be immigrants, but students.
Presumably they’d have to come funded, like all the foreign students we meet at the university and at Sainsburys and they won’t be coming to stay.
Immigration will be harder to deal with.

This is proposed as an extension of the time limited visas offered already to the young people of a multitude of other countries. One in, one out with young Brits wanting work experience in Europe is a likely option.
I can guarantee that if UK under 30s were asked, they would see this as an entirely positive move, which benefits them too. It’s the older curmudgeons who won’t support it, as they don’t support anything this government does.

I didn’t vote for this Labour government, but I would rather they succeed than fail.

Cannot see why anyone would wish failure on any government, if the government fails than the country’s citizens have to deal with the inevitable consequences.

Immigration would be a lot easier to deal with if all the overseas students paying huge sums to be educated at UK universities weren't included in the immigration figures. They mostly come, study and go home.

Fees quoted in 2024 for international students vary between £11,000 and £67,000 per year, depending on the university and the course studied. On top of that are living costs and the healthcare surcharge. They are highly unlikely to be paying that kind of money and then overstay their study visa to work under the radar in a nail bar or a hand car wash...

There are plenty of younger people who are anti-immigration.

My own DC and many young people I know have taken
advantage of the working visa schemes and one of my DC worked in several European countries before Brexit.

As long as the scheme is administered well, it should be of great benefit to all.

That’s so funny Casdon since, in the time honoured I know somebody GN fashion, I know people through family, friends, gym members and work, where staff range from NQT to late 60’s who also don’t support some of the actions of this government.
They’d be surprised to learn that they are curmudgeons, even those who are not older.

Unless there are limits on the numbers of people who will benefit from this - iin both directions, we could end up with millions of young people flooding in - as with the Tony Blair initiative. That or they are given short term work and holiday visas's similar to those granted to Australia.

Australia is very strict about deporting young people if they have overstayed their visa term.

Why not wait for details before critiques? Its likely to be restricted and cautious in line with general via changes, but make so much difference for younger people to see further than the UK, increase understanding of the world we live in, and for your Europeans the same.

Just done a quick check of the newspapers/news outlets and yes the O/P is right out of GB news that its a "reset" and a "Back door" into freedom of movement as was in the past

I think it would be good if something more could be agreed about everyone recognising qualifications from all round Europe. It's daft that vets, medical staff, teachers, any professionals, or even tradesmen, etc. can't work in different countries without a great deal of hoop jumping.

The EU has never been very clever at joined-up thinking. Covid was a good example, where every country decided to go off and do their own thing.
