As a politically moderate American, I'd like to thank the many posters here for expressing the views of so many Americans. Nothing less than fear. It must resonate with Europeans as much because Trump/Vance and their minions are shamelessly emulating the Hitler playbook, thanks to our corrupt and cowardly Congress, some courts (esp soda can Clarence), our dept of (in)justice, etc. I've long had issues with the extremist Left, too. But they did not starve babies, kill current-and-in-the-future (meaning you?) patients by killing medical research, kidnap LEGAL immigrants off the street by stalking schools and stores and churches (reminiscent of the girl in red scene from Schindler's List), etc. And now- who knows if he/THEY will obey the Supreme Court. A court that granted him immunity. ...Please help us. Half our country is shrugging- or worse. We need you. Thank you.

Shock court ruling on Trump tariffs
(87 Posts)This is mind blowing stuff.
A US federal court blocks President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs, in a major blow to his economic policies
Three judges rule that Trump overstepped his authority when he used an emergency law to impose tariffs on nearly every country.
BBC verify an hour ago.
"US government raked in billions after Trump tariffs
The US has collected more than $40 billion in border duties since tariffs took effect, according to the Department of the Treasury - a record amount.
If the White House's appeal against the ruling blocking many tariffs is not successful, a big chunk of that will need to be refunded.
As the chart below shows, April and May saw the level of duties collected hit at least more than double the average since 2020.
Duties on cars, aluminium and steel are not impacted by the ruling, but the sweeping so-called reciprocal tariffs unveiled by Trump - 10% across the board for most countries and 30% for China - have been rendered legally void.
If higher courts do uphold Wednesday’s ruling after the White House appeals, that could be a hefty bill for the US government.
Whats more - just look at this report from the timeline

The chart below shows how US investors have reacted positively so far to the court ruling on Trump’s tariffs*
Futures are agreements to buy or sell stocks at a set price in the future, so these movements provide an indication of what could happen when US markets open later today.
The Nasdaq-100, S&P 500 and the Dow Jones all rose after the announcement.
Trumps reaction
But moments after the ruling, the Trump administration said it is appealing because it is "not for unelected judges to decide how to properly address a national emergency" - and some tariffs levied under other laws are not impacted by the decision
The US is currently negotiating individual trade deals with dozens of countries - those talks have now been thrown into chaos.

Trump doesn’t listen to anybody! He is a monster. He is destroying my country in order to make as much money for himself as he can.
Welcome US posters which shows a lot of us in UK are not far off in our judgements. No I haven't seen it Littlebea02 but it sounds very sexist!
I think some of us follow as we don't want it to happen here so watch for the warning signs and the relationship with the judiciary is a key one. I just happened to be watching an NCIS episode made in 2023, its very hung ho military but what stuck out was the sympathy to some undocumented people/migrants as in worthy characters appearing and the attitude, "dont worry, we've come to you for information to help a case not to turn you in - I'm just waiting until these start getting challenged under the bans!
Something I have ben wanting to ask US posters - all my reading points to wealthy US citizens employing cheap nanny's, maids, housekeepers, gardeners, carers, farm labour - all migrants whats happened to them? Have they used influence to get green cards to keep these workers?
Trump himself in his first term -
"How two housekeepers took on Trump and revealed a network of undocumented immigrants in his company
Totally agree wirhyou
😂 if it wasn't all so ghastly.
Several small companies are now suing the Trump administration over tariffs and its one of the reasons Trump has got the "appeal" over the tariff ban.
“CNN’s Erin Burnett talks with David Levi, the founder of toy company MicroKits and one of the plaintiffs in a lawsuit suing the Trump administration over its tariffs”
Its really well explained in this CNN video
www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MGB7IDWfLE.
Trump, aware of the bad publicity on tariffs, is courting his core support groups with a new announcement.
President Donald Trump has announced the US will double its current tariff rate on steel and aluminium imports from 25% to 50%, starting on Wednesday.
The projected resulting effect of jobs for US workers in improved eves of production relies on a partnership with Japans Nippon steel.
Trump promised a group of enthusiastic steel workers they would “Get bonuses of $5.000."
Trump's roughly hour-long, wide-ranging rally speech hinted at the deal he said he had made with Japan's Nippon Steel but he did not offer any new details.
But both companies have not confirmed any deal was completed
There are also issues of whether the US or Japan would "own" the new set up which matters because of widely differing terms and conditions of employment.
One could point out a wiser man might have waited before making promises?
I think the basis of this is that Trump does not understand the American Constitution and the role of the POTUS. He sees himself as an absolute monarch.
Unfortunately, he is getting away with most of it.
It appears that way but every day brings also brings news of the different groundswells against him. Wondering what and when means it will reach a critical mass. Not to get rid of him but voting in the mid terms? and we don't know how far the democrats are in finding the right leader (s).
It's shocking how he has turned the world against him and USA. Of course, not every country, but he's managed to unite Europe (mostly) and Canada has an enhanced reputation because of him. And all within six months. I can't think of many who take him seriously. He's made the role of the President a laughing stock throughout the world.
Good Afternoon all,
Oh dear. I've been hearing about this. I read up on it and have come to the conclusion that this will be something of nothing, I'm afraid. I'll add that I am a dual citizen of the UK and US. I moved here in 2009, and this is my "home" in my heart and mind. However, I do keep in contact with my family there, of course. And I most certainly keep up on all aspects of trump. And that is correct, I'm not about to capitalise his name, as I do not believe he deserves that. True, I've got strong views.
Factually, others have already mentioned this, and they are correct-the Supreme Court has been previously "stacked" by trump, in order to ensure he can slip the nets if needed.
This is just slowing him down a bit. It will cause the stocks to move up and down, more uncertainty for the US and the rest of the World-players. However, in the end, I believe we will see that, indeed, trump will win his case.
I believe that will be true for most moves he makes. It won't be until "We the People" take control, that we will see any major changes to anything close to normalcy or even a balance of any kind.
Whilst it is very sad for me to see, I try very hard to dip in and out of the news as quickly and accurately as possible and move on to other things. Otherwise, I'm afraid I would be in knots all of the time.
My darling mum has told me her prescription medication has gone from what was already a huge amount of approximately 200 USD, to just over 600 USD per month. That wipes out close to half of her "Social Security", her monthly amount she has paid into over her entire working life.
Oh, big sigh here.
Many thanks for starting the thread!

Very well stated, Grandmabatty.

Did you watch HIGNFY last night?
Oh dear, Trump was shredded. The awards at the West Point Naval Academy plus other speeches etc.
No, I didn't see it Allira. I feel sad for the many Americans who have to put up with him and his crazy policies. The man wasn't fit to run a business let alone a country
That issue with prescription meds will affect so many people. Sorry your Mum is caught up in it, but it might be the thing to galvanise some effective push backs.
Going with positives, Pro-Trump candidates have lost some important elections around the world. Keeping my fingers crossed the same happens in Poland tomorrow.
Tune in to YouTube UK, there are too many posts even to start to list. Police state & judiciary directed from No 10 right across the real news, not the MSM, they disseminate whatever they are told

Ah, its not the Supreme Court.
"Federal judges can only be removed from office through the impeachment process. The House of Representatives initiates impeachment, and the Senate tries the impeachment"
Yes, and this is where and why t rump will not be held accountable. All roads lead here, to the House. And the House, is also stacked and, if you've ever had the pleasure of watching them in action, is a sight to behold. Absolutely bonkers and quite frankly, scary!

😂 MSM do what they're told by no 10.
That shows just how out of touch you are with our mainstream papers, the majority of which are owned by more right wing interests which never miss a chance to Starmer bash.
As for "UK" U tube, you can find POV right across the spectrum from both the UK and USA.
Because U tube algorithms are tailored to your own viewing history wherever you are.
So Chazz01 your U tube viewing, unless you enter a very specific set of parameters will be shaped by what you have already read, ie those confirming your POV
The only way round this is to enter possible sources that you might disagree with to get a full or wider view. that goes for those of us who disagree with you: for example I look at Fox News sometimes. You might consider looking at the Guardian New online, which is available in the USA.

In a way, this quiet little example tells us more than any amount of political posturing - and it's what will make a voting different, along with food and other key prices, small businesses, and big firms like Walmart going up against Trump. Everyday life experiences eventually come up against ideology.
I’d like to remind people that not long ago the Conservative government tried to prorogue Parliament. They were prevented I think, by the judiciary. Add this to all the dodgy dealings during the pandemic. I’m just thankful that moderates saw the dangers.
Mr Farage is cut from the same cloth as Donald Trump. He may cut taxes but he has already said we should move to a USA insurance based health system. Is this going to help us? The far right are always out there but large numbers of people don’t see it until late in the day.
I’m looking forward to the people of the USA taking back control but it could be a messy business. It’s watching another unfolding horror story. My thoughts are with all those USA citizens who just want their country back.
The danger is of sleepwalking into extreme POV because they promise much when things feel tough - but what gets delivered are not just societies that have become dictatorships but because they've often come to power through pushing hatred and scaremongering of "others" we end up with a curtailment of all we hold dear.

Thanks for this, ayse. You really underscored the purpose of why I shared that. This is exactly what it all boils down to. Sadly, I've got many more examples of this happening. Doing the weekly shopping is now an experiment in terror for many. What will it be this week? The erratic way things are being run, is really starting to show on the shelves in many shops. My son lives in Alaska and you can only imagine how hard they are about to be hit, depending so much upon our (previously) decent relationship with Canada. And I truly agree that "Taking back their country" is going to be a huge undertaking, and should be given much weight and attention. Thanks again.
Perhaps Alaska should apply to become a province of Canada
