Perhaps Alaska should apply to become a province of Canada
I've always thought it should be!
This is mind blowing stuff.
A US federal court blocks President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs, in a major blow to his economic policies
Three judges rule that Trump overstepped his authority when he used an emergency law to impose tariffs on nearly every country.
BBC verify an hour ago.
"US government raked in billions after Trump tariffs
The US has collected more than $40 billion in border duties since tariffs took effect, according to the Department of the Treasury - a record amount.
If the White House's appeal against the ruling blocking many tariffs is not successful, a big chunk of that will need to be refunded.
As the chart below shows, April and May saw the level of duties collected hit at least more than double the average since 2020.
Duties on cars, aluminium and steel are not impacted by the ruling, but the sweeping so-called reciprocal tariffs unveiled by Trump - 10% across the board for most countries and 30% for China - have been rendered legally void.
If higher courts do uphold Wednesday’s ruling after the White House appeals, that could be a hefty bill for the US government.
Whats more - just look at this report from the timeline

The chart below shows how US investors have reacted positively so far to the court ruling on Trump’s tariffs*
Futures are agreements to buy or sell stocks at a set price in the future, so these movements provide an indication of what could happen when US markets open later today.
The Nasdaq-100, S&P 500 and the Dow Jones all rose after the announcement.
Trumps reaction
But moments after the ruling, the Trump administration said it is appealing because it is "not for unelected judges to decide how to properly address a national emergency" - and some tariffs levied under other laws are not impacted by the decision
The US is currently negotiating individual trade deals with dozens of countries - those talks have now been thrown into chaos.

To add to that, varian, Alaska used to be Russian and was sold by them to America.
Never mind the indigenous peoples who had lived there for thousands of years!
Had to check up on my suspicions, that the history of Alaska and it becoming a State was very much tied up with the Cold War period
"Alaska officially became part of the United States on October 18, 1867, following its purchase from Russia.
However, it didn't become a state until January 3, 1959 ie Cold War period).
The purchase was part of a larger effort to expand the US and end Russian presence in North America.
Google says Canadians joke about it but don't want it.....
and drill baby drill as Alaska's a red state. Apparently they want Trump in control.
He also just approved to start (or re-start) drilling for oil up there. ..
It's not very far from Russia (55 miles) but over 1,600 miles as the crow flies from the nearest point in the rest of the US.
That close! there will be controversy abut oil in Alaska, not just from the climate change perspective, but also its a "wilderness escape" for USA citizens of (often featured on TV) and drilling for oil and all it brings won't go down well with them.
"Habitat Loss and Fragmentation:
Drilling operations, including roads, infrastructure, and noise, can disrupt and fragment the fragile tundra ecosystem, impacting wildlife migration and denning patterns.
Oil Spills:
Oil spills are a major concern, as oil can coat fur and feathers, destroying insulation and causing harm to animals. Spills in waterways can also contaminate and kill marine life.
Pollution:
Drilling activities, including fracking, can lead to the contamination of ground and surface water, harming both wildlife and human populations."
Allira as regards the Alaskan Natives they are very against it.
( I remember the film "On deadly ground" starring Stephen Seagal (described as a "film so bad you'll love it) who stood up for alaskan Natives against the ruination of territory by big oil firms) - time to bring it out and dust it down...)
DD worked there many years ago and said it was truly spectacular. We've never managed to visit but from postcards, photos and brochures it looked wild, unspoilt and beautiful.
Trump in tariff spite mode again..
Trump is now trying to bring big US companies to heel….using, yes, tariffs.
www.cnn.com/2025/06/02/business/trump-tariffs-apple-iphone-mattel-barbie
“Earlier this year, Trump was praising Apple CEO Tim Cook when the company announced plans for $500 billion in US investments.
Now its a 25% tariff threat- yes, an internal tariff
But when Cook later announced he intends to shift production of iPhones bound for the US market from China to India, he clearly angered Trump, who has promised — without much evidence — that his tariffs would lead companies to bring production to US plants from overseas factories.
Company-specific tariff threats will likely face legal problems, especially after a decision late Wednesday by the US Court of International Trade questioned the president’s authority to unilaterally impose tariffs without action by Congress — a decision that was put on hold by a Court of Appeals decision on Thursday.
Even without this week’s court decision, Trump would have had problems putting in place tariffs that target a specific company, said Lizbeth Levinson, a trade attorney at the law firm Fox Rothschild
“He doesn’t have the constitutional power to name names. It has to be a whole class of products, equally against everyone in industry,” she said. “But Trump’s modus operandi has always been to take the action and worry about reality later.”
It’s just pure spite, isnt it?
And will hither public..
““The president is obviously pretty upset with Apple and Tim Cook,” said Clark Packard, research fellow at the Cato Institute in an interview with CNN. “(But) I don’t envision a specific action against Apple. The American public would be outraged if their iPhones… became substantially more expensive, right? So he risks hurting a lot of everyday American who are also voters.”
When Mr Trump is crossed, he stamps his feet. My youngest grandchild does that, but will outgrow it, I'm sure, because he's only four years old.
The trouble is, in both cases, this behaviour sometimes results in an activity known as Shooting Yourself in the Foot.
Alaskan Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski talks about fear of speaking against Trump
www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvheGKFIHYQ
The comments on that video are really worth a read, a lot say "Get a backbone", but then, they don't have to put up with the threats.
However, unless she uses her position in the Senate to vote......I imagine others face the same dilemmas and it will take a stronger wave of popular opinion to back them up?
There are two groups I noticed within “conservative” or Republican circles
“Never Trump Movement”
And
“Republicans Against Trump (on X)
But its hard to find out how big or influential they are atm, we perhaps need one of GN's posters to give us more idea?
