Just watching what happened in down-town Los Angeles yesterday as ICE, ATF and others conducted raids against immigrants and others.

The Los Angeles citizens protested through the night against the military-style raises. In a statement from Kathryn Barger, a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, she says:

I am aware of today's DHS ICE enforcement actions that took place in Los Angeles. At this time, my office is actively monitoring the situation. While I fully support the enforcement of our nation’s laws, I also believe it is essential that actions taken by federal agencies are conducted with transparency, fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of all individuals. My priority remains the safety and well-being of all residents of Los Angeles County.

Live updates of the protests can be found here. They look massive!! And peaceful. In fact, many of them have already dispersed with no issues. Hopefully nothing kicks up after sunset.

I will keep watch on the DC parade. There were no No Kings protests planned there for today, though I did hear other groups were planning protests.

Brilliant reference, as its being updated!

I watch these types of updates during the election cycles too. It is actually a great way to know information from people in multiple locations.

LA seems to be getting spicy. Austin could go either way.

So far, 2 notable arrests. Both far-right activists instigating violence from the looks of it. 1 in Austin who was targeting an elected official and one in Culpepper Virginia who attempted to drive his car into a crowd.

Chicago dispersed without violence or arrests.

I am happy that these have been peaceful and hope it remains that way. We need to show the world that we can protest peacefully, especially on a day when far right activists are instigating violence.

Looks like there were about 100x more protestors around the country then supporters at his parade. Abysmal turnout. grin

They started the parade early, which I am sure will be the "reason" why so few supporters showed up.

The first one is Idaho. Which is a MAGA holdout. This is a large crowd for that area.

The second is San Diego.

I know the world has been worried about us the last few months. But we keep showing up and each time the crowd grows.

We are catching on.

imaround Sun 15-Jun-25 03:59:04

My last post for today.

Alt-National Park is estimating 8.5 million protestors today, bringing us close to the 3.5% rule.

"The "3.5% rule," a concept often associated with Erica Chenoweth, suggests that a nonviolent protest involving 3.5% or more of a population is twice as likely to succeed as armed conflicts. It's a generalization, not a strict law, and some argue it's more of a descriptive tendency than a prescriptive guideline. "

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 15-Jun-25 08:41:03

Thank you for posting imaround- the protests in places such as Idaho must give everyone hope.

Grandmabatty Sun 15-Jun-25 09:02:10

Thank you imaround for the updates. They are appreciated

PoliticsNerd Sun 15-Jun-25 09:11:31

There will be a percentage that does affect others thinking Imaround. It probably is, as your post suggests, slightly different depending on the subject of the protest but it sounds like a useful rule of thumb.

Thank you for posting all the information you do imaround.

Friends from LA are just terrified. Husband is Moroccan with Green card and job in LA, has had to return to Morocco as father died suddenly. They are so worried he may have trouble getting back home, despite all his papers, etc, being in order. He is brown and arab looking. It's just awful.

You can be white and Welsh and still be put in chains and deported because you misunderstood the terms of your visa.

Do you mean this guy?

No, I mean a girl from Portskewett in Wales.
It was on the news recently.

This young woman who was working for her keep on a tourist visa? It sounds like the process to resolve took too long, probably because she was caught up in the huge numbers who were initially detained?

Yes. She was thrown into a detention facility, where, apparently, the conditions were horrendous then escorted to the plane in chains.

It was discussed on Gransnet a little while ago.

Dickens Sun 15-Jun-25 13:01:38

Putting 'suspects' in chains in this day and age - seriously? Regardless of colour or nationality, or 'document' status.

I can appreciate that if you might be dealing with a suspected terrorist or violent criminal, there could be a good reason to do this; but as a general principle, I think it's brutish.

According to factually on the 'net, who harvest their information from various sources (but I haven't had time to check these out) - more than half of those detained had no criminal record.

... factually admits there are 'competing narratives' and 'biases' to consider, such as...

"Law enforcement agencies benefit from portraying all detainees as potential threats, as evidenced by DHS's stance."

"Immigration advocacy groups benefit from highlighting non-criminal deportations to demonstrate systemic overreach."

"Political actors can use either narrative to support their immigration policy positions."

Being undocumented is a civil penalty, not a federal crime.
- but

"ICE's public statements about focusing on criminals contradict their actual practices"

- and

"The Department of Homeland Security's stance that immigrants without criminal records are "far from innocent," despite providing no supporting evidence"

I realise there are ^opportunists' and would-be anarchists etc who exploit protests / demonstrations, but apart from them, maybe the level of anger is in direct proportion to the level of overreach by law enforcement?

The first protest on April 5th had an estimated 5.8 million. Yesterdays was over 11 million. Our numbers, thus our voices, are increasing every month. That gives me hope. I am so proud of my fellow citizens. They all remained relatively peaceful. We have worse riots after the Superbowl.

Thank you to all the people all over the world who showed up in their own countries to support us and lend their voices to our cause. It was heartfelt to see. And it shows governments all over the world that we aren't giving up and we aren't going to tolerate their authoritarian takeover.

He seemed subdued and quiet yesterday. Stayed on script too, which is unusual for him.

I am going to enjoy peace today and see what he comes up with tomorrow.

imaround Sun 15-Jun-25 17:53:03

Dickens, factually is correct. Many deported had no criminal record. They have also been rounding up migrants who are here legally.

The narriative they are putting out that all these people are dangerous criminals is false. And even if one is a dangerous criminal, they still have the right to due process.

I appreciate the information you give us, and your observations on this thread imaround.

There are occasions when I feel that what is happening isn't real - can't be happening - and am alarmed at the realisation that it did and it is... and most of all that Trump seems to be so easily able to subvert the law, contravene the Constitution, and create chaos - not only in the US, but economically around the world.

In any nation, the extremely rich and powerful basically control its political and economic affairs - but they can only do this via the support of the electorate, that's the worrying aspect.

I recently saw a cartoon drawing. A medieval king was atop a turret of his castle nervously looking down on an angry, rebellious mob with pitchforks and fiery torches gathered below. Looking nervously and questioningly at the courtier beside him, said courtier advised, "just tell those with the pitchforks that those with the torches want to steal their pitchforks".

I loved one of the clues in today’s Guardian Quick Crossword:

A Trump ordeal (anag) - impervious to attacks (6-6)
The answer is:
Armour plated

That is good Lady!

Random, but in case you want to see why he makes some of the policy decisions that he does.

It's all about the bills. Dollar bills.

A massive conflict of interest, at best.

Final estimated count of the protests is 13.14 million nationwide. 3.9% of the population. grin

We continue to fight on!

They have arrested the man who shot Democratic officials. The article has more information on the timeline and photos of his security vehicle.

Being held by federal authorities, but has been charged with state level charges and a $5 million bond.

I am seeing that federal murder charges are coming. I will have to research it to see how that would fit together and not trigger double jeopardy. I am sure they have a way, I just do not know what it is.

NYC Comptroller (Democrat) was in court today because he refused to let unidentified ICE agents take a man for deportation without a warrant.

Trump's team has said they will move into NYC, Chicago and somewhere in California. All Democratic strongholds. Kristi Noem has said that their goal is replace elected officials in these areas.

He has decided to stop ICE raids at farms and factories IIRC. Seems like those illegal immigrants are safe enough to be in the US illegally. /s

In the meantime, he has ordered ICE to target Democratic cities first.
