It looks like Trump now has his Stormtroopers (Stoßtruppen)

Just watching what happened in down-town Los Angeles yesterday as ICE, ATF and others conducted raids against immigrants and others.

The Los Angeles citizens protested through the night against the military-style raises. In a statement from Kathryn Barger, a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, she says:

I am aware of today's DHS ICE enforcement actions that took place in Los Angeles. At this time, my office is actively monitoring the situation. While I fully support the enforcement of our nation’s laws, I also believe it is essential that actions taken by federal agencies are conducted with transparency, fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of all individuals. My priority remains the safety and well-being of all residents of Los Angeles County.

The video of a mother being violently arrested with her young child looking on gets me. Presumably they left the child?

Trump appears to be only hitting Democrat areas. Other Republican areas with a large Latino population is being left alone. We will see if this continues.

In some cases the children are left on the street. In others, the children were detained and deported with their family members despite the children being US Citizens. In one case, the child's father, also a US Citizen, was actively trying to find the child to take custody of him and was unable to due to lack of cooperation by the government.

Let's not forget that it was Trump who started separating families at the border during his first term. There are still "missing" children that have never been reunited with their families.

The National Guard are nothing like the Nazi stormtroopers and it's nonsense to say otherwise. Given the degree of violence in LA the police chief has said he has re-evaluated his view in favour of using the NG.

I am loving the "but we have raids and it is fine".

To be frank, we have laws and rights in this country that are being broken and violated by these raids. Just because something is ok in the UK, doesn't mean it is ok to do here.

I am not sure why that concept seems so hard to understand.

Oreo Mon 09-Jun-25 17:23:20

Would you prefer all illegal workers were never bothered by the authorities then imaround?
All countries including yours and ours do raids on premises to arrest and perhaps deport.
It’s the only way to apprehend them.

imaround Mon 09-Jun-25 17:28:49

No. I prefer the laws of this country NOT be broken by the federal government.

They do not even know if all of these people are illegal or not because they have not been given due process. Several of these migrants have been ordered to be returned to the US because they were wrongly deported.

The problem isn't that they are conducting raids. It is that they way they are doing it is violating people's Constitutional rights AND THE LAW.

If you are OK with your government breaking the law and violating your rights, that is up to you. We don't take to kindly to that in the US, which is why they are protesting in the first place.

Oreo Mon 09-Jun-25 17:34:58

Presumably it’s the relatives that started the protests?
Do illegal workers in the US have Constitutional rights?
I suppose any raid is frightening and worrying for them but if there illegally they must kind of expect it?
It’s done here all the time as there are so many nail bars and Turkish barbers and such that are often fronts for money laundering.

Yes our border force does raid property, but the big difference is that those deemed to be illegal are deemed so as a result of due process of the law. They are not bundled onto planes or whatever and sent to some god awful prison. Never to be seen again.

Oreo you can't seriously believe that what is happening in the US just now equates to our police doing a raid on a nail bar where they know for sure there are illegal immigrants.
Nor do our police use rubber bullets and tear gas.

They were doing a much bigger operation I know, but still much the same ( it isn’t police here doing raids btw it’s Border Force type units, Immigration Officers.)
And without any of our renowned politeness of course.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 09-Jun-25 17:42:05

No oreo it isn’t the same. If you are looking at the footage, you would know it isn’t the same.

imaround Mon 09-Jun-25 17:42:47

Rights in the US Constitution are enumerated by personhood, not citizenship.

I am going to say this again.

The federal government is currently violating constitutional rights and breaking the law.

That is not ok. Ever. No matter what country it is in.

The federal government has been found to be acting illegally MULTIPLE times and been ordered to return wrongly deported people.

Once they start blatantly breaking the law and violating rights, no one is safe.

Oreo Mon 09-Jun-25 17:46:09

Am all for things being done humanely but the fact that illegal workers could well be armed ( a bit different in the UK!) then those in the US doing the raids will tend to be on the rougher side. Many things are done differently there, their police are nothing like our police.
As to the legality of sending the National Guard there, I guess that will be debated.

The footage isn’t clear.

California has the 5th largest economy in the world. It votes Democrat. It is home to celebrities who make no bones about criticising Trump. Apparently Trump has no love for California.

I think he would like to crush California...

I imagine he feels this is the only way he can subjugate them. They are not going to vote for him.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 09-Jun-25 17:49:03

That is why we should take so seriously ANY instance if our law makers breaking the law - whatever it is.

We can see it everywhere we look now.

imaround Mon 09-Jun-25 17:57:08

Really Oreo? How many ICE officers have been shot by an illegal.

Is that why it took over 20 agents to arrest a single unarmed woman while her children were in the car watching?

That video is out there is you cared to look. It would have been bery clear to you if you had seen it.

By ignoring the facts to for your narrative, you are showing us who you are.

Oreo Mon 09-Jun-25 17:59:46

😄

Oreo Mon 09-Jun-25 18:03:13

Anyone can be armed in the US, just a fact of life.
The amount of videos online that are real/ made up/ downright confusing means that I don’t always jump to any conclusions.
It’s your country and you do things differently there, even when the awful Trump wasn’t the President.

imaround Mon 09-Jun-25 18:28:56

You may not jump to conclusions, but you refuse to see the truth too. It surprises me that you have such a strong opinion on something you are actually not very informed on.

You also seem OK with the government breaking the law and violating rights as long as it is the people you think it should happen to.

Here is the truth about how dangerous migrants are in the US.

"Immigrants in the United States commit crimes at lower rates than the U.S.-born population, notwithstanding the assertion by critics that immigration is linked to higher rates of criminal activity. This reality of reduced criminality, which holds across immigrant groups including unauthorized immigrants, has been demonstrated through research as well as findings for the one state in the United States—Texas—that tracks criminal arrests and convictions by immigration status.

A growing volume of research demonstrates that not only do immigrants commit fewer crimes, but they also do not raise crime rates in the U.S. communities where they settle. In fact, some studies indicate that immigration can lower criminal activity, especially violent crime, in places with inclusive policies and social environments where immigrant populations are well established."

www.migrationpolicy.org/content/immigrants-and-crime#:~:text=Lower%20Crime%20Rates%20in%20Communities,%E2%80%9Cnon%2Dsanctuary%E2%80%9D%20cities.

From actual data, from Texas no less.

These agents would be in more danger trying to arrest a white man in Texas than a mother in her car with her children in Massachusetts.

Have a nice day Oreo.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 09-Jun-25 18:32:44

Trump calling for the arrest of Newsom. He’s giving democracy a real kicking.

imaround Mon 09-Jun-25 18:44:04

Of course he is. They will start arresting all their opponents eventually. They have already arrested a judge and some other official in New Mexico.

He said he hopes Blue States cease to exist. I can't believe there are people out there who do not think this man is a dictator and support his policies and reign of terror.

The Army parade is Saturday. There are protests kicking off that day in every city. I really hope things die down and do not escalate this weekend. I am actually traveling to your shores next week and I want to be able to get out and home with no problems.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 09-Jun-25 18:49:31

Welcome in advance!

Maremia Mon 09-Jun-25 18:56:36

Following due process. That's what should be done. Not troops on the streets.
Yes, it is 'terror tactics', and all of the comparisons with the rise of Hitler's dictatorship are terrifying because they are true.

Maremia Mon 09-Jun-25 18:57:14

Hope your visit goes well.

Oreo Mon 09-Jun-25 19:06:59

Ta imaround. Am having a very nice day indeed.
