Just watching what happened in down-town Los Angeles yesterday as ICE, ATF and others conducted raids against immigrants and others.

The Los Angeles citizens protested through the night against the military-style raises. In a statement from Kathryn Barger, a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, she says:

I am aware of today's DHS ICE enforcement actions that took place in Los Angeles. At this time, my office is actively monitoring the situation. While I fully support the enforcement of our nation’s laws, I also believe it is essential that actions taken by federal agencies are conducted with transparency, fairness, and respect for the rights and dignity of all individuals. My priority remains the safety and well-being of all residents of Los Angeles County.

Worrying thought, and hope it doesn't happen, but what if there are more protests? Will Trump run out of troops to deploy? Is that possible?

Well I think that each state has its own troops, so I guess there are plenty to go around.

I am so excited, my first visit! Just a few days in London before a few days in Paris. I need to spend much, much more time there to truly see everything I would like to. I am actually an amateur UK Royal Family history buff so I could spend a long time visiting.

I would have given anything to visit this weekend for the Trooping, instead of next. smile

Thanks for the welcome!

Whitewavemark2 Mon 09-Jun-25 19:22:19

What are you hoping to visit?

Whitewavemark2 Mon 09-Jun-25 19:23:39

Week after next we are in France😊, be like ships passing in the night!

My first visit would be to Hever Castle. I want to see her Book of Hours especially.

If I could spend my days jumping countries in Europe just to visit the museums it would be a dream come true as well. You all have such a long history compared to here and I love history, so I want to see everything.

Went there for a Christmas lunch last year, just before Christmas😊. It was beautifully decorated.

Can I recommend the Musee d’Orsay in Paris. Someone told us about it prior to a weekend visit and it contained all of my favourite Impressionist paintings along with lots of other fascinating stuff.

I actually saw the d'Orsay in Paris when I was there in the late 80's. It would definitely be on my list! We are going into the Louvre this trip.

What a lovely turn of thread. Have a wonderful time imaround and come back another time to visit Yorkshire (God's own county). If you love our history - which is the root of yours too - you would love York.

Have a wonderful time Imaround London & Paris are two unique cities, lots of history to discover, hope you can come back & visit other places too but those two are "must see".

A place I’ve always wanted to go to is the pet cemetery in Paris; I do like cemeteries! Rin Tin Tin is buried there as is a horse called Troytown who won the Grand National but sadly died at Auteuil. I don’t think we have anything like it in the UK; even though we’re supposed to be a Nation of animal lovers I think the French take it to another level.

Claremont Mon 09-Jun-25 21:26:54

How did we get to animal lovers with that title?

Here is Trump explaining a few years ago, why he was not able to 'interfere' with the criminal, violent and even deadly Capitol riots- he had to follow the Law!

Why is that worrying? Running out of troops could curb his despotism...

Or do you think that any protest should be suppressed by draconian methods?

Delila Mon 09-Jun-25 23:32:06

Enjoy your trip imaround!

I understood Maremia's post to mean she hopes things don't escalate if more protests happen.

He wont run out of troops though. Here are the US military numbers as of 2023 I believe. He could send every single one of them to do domestic police work illegally. And if he runs out of those, I am sure there are still at least 50,000,000 Trump supporters who are armed who will fight for him.

Dire thought isn't it?

If this continues to escalate, he will declare Marshall Law, in LA at least, which suspends everyone's rights. I think that is his plan to be honest. Once he does that, he has unlimited power. Dictators going to dictate.

Claremont, interesting turn of events isn't it? He had the power to stop January 6th. They were begging him to call the National Guard. He refused. They were trying to find and hang the Vice President of the US to stop him from certifying an election. He still refused.

imaround Mon 09-Jun-25 23:37:12

I should also point out that Congress can stop all of this at any time. The republicans, and some democrats, refuse to do their jobs. The rest of the Dems, other than a select few, are just as incompetent.

They all need to be voted out in 2026, no matter what is behind their name. If we can still vote.

RosieandherMaw Mon 09-Jun-25 23:55:46

Surely you mean Martial law which involves the substitution of military authority for civil rule usually in times of war, rebellion or natural disaster ( not to be confused with the Marshall Plan of 1948 which created reliable trading partners and supported the development of stable democratic governments in Western Europe)

imaround Mon 09-Jun-25 23:58:44

Yes Rosie. Not sure where my brain went. Thanks for correcting me.

It is getting worse.

I’m not sure what I’d do if I was in America.

Fight against what is rapidly becoming a police state - if not something far worse

Or

Take the wind out of a Trump’s sails and let the thing disappear - but this can only be short term I think. I suspect he is intent on far worse as far as the constitution is concerned

Where is the opposition, what on earth are the democrats and surely there must be some republicans who believe in the rule of law?

Whitewavemark2 Tue 10-Jun-25 07:16:58

Former top military figures have said that Trump is politicising the military, by using them against American citizens and domestic politics.

Trump has signalled that LA is only the start. He has declared that there will be troops everywhere.

The question is - will troops be happy firing against their own fellow citizens?

I would hope that there are powerful people who are getting organised behind the scenes to stop this.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 10-Jun-25 07:20:49

On Saturday there is to be a military parade in Washington to celebrate the 250th birthday of the army. It coincides with Trump’s birthday.

$40 million is to be spent to celebrate to all intents Trump’s birthday.

This is deeply un-American. Or at least was.
