Glastonbury And The BBC Drowns The Welfare Bill

The row about what went on at an overblown festival involving an obscure and obnoxious couple of rappers and the BBC's part in it all has certainly put attention for the Government's controversal Welfare Bill on the back burner.

And I bet Mister Starmer and Co are darn glad.

Very like Yes Prime Minister

IT was incitement to violence and in front if a huge captuve audience. Needs dealing with by the police..Not BBC fault it was breaking the law.

The end of Glastonbury as we knew it?

GrannyGravy13 Tue 01-Jul-25 08:12:31

The BBC production team and the Glastonbury team knew Bob Vylans modus operandi.

Their set should never have gone out live it should also not have been left for viewing on iplayer for another five hours.

So yes the BBC have questions to be answered.

Somerset and Avon Police are taking this and the band Kneecap allegations seriously.

If Lucy Connolly can be imprisoned for a hateful tweet, then these bands need to be behind bars for hate speech and inciting violence.

News programmes covering this are also giving many news hours to the Welfare Bill, the two are not mutually exclusive.

BBC News at 10 last night.
First topic 9.14 minutes to the Welfare Bill.
Second topic 2.33 minutes to Glastonbury.
I said to himself that the Welfare Bill topic was going on a bit too long. Just checked the timings.

Some people need saving from themselves.
This rant from a Rapper, known for his extremism, should have not been live-streamed by the BBC, who should have known what the consequences would be. Just irresponsible journalism.
Now the BBC is in the dock again and the Rapper could go to jail.

Jail? Oh purleeze…He wasn’t being anti-semitic. Musicians have long-used their art for political purposes. Maybe he shouldn’t have said”kill” even though that’s what the IDF essentially are - licensed killers.

Agreed on all counts.

You could say that every governments armed forces are licensed killers

I will reiterate, people have been imprisoned for tweets inciting violence, Bob Vylan antisemitism, and Kneecap (kill a conservative MP) (one of their number is out on unconditional bail after being charged with terrorism offences)

A lot of them are conscripts - just ordinary people who’d probably rather be doing something else.

I don’t know enough about the ME situation to comment on that, but the comments were incitement to hatred, IMO. I don’t want to see a singer jailed, but there has to be consistency.

Yes, there has to be consistency, if not we will see more headlines of Two Tier Keir

A woman was jailed because of a racist tweet after the Southport murders. What is the difference?

Glasweegran Tue 01-Jul-25 10:45:32

It's not consistency though. Lucy was inciting actual rioters to set fire to a hotel containing innocent people including women and children, which they did. It was only luck and the fire brigade that stopped people being murdered.
Conversely, a punk group led chants at hippie peace festival (because that's what it started as and is still at heart) to a group of festivals goers who are not in the slightest danger of personally attacking the IDF, who are an organisation currently being accused of war crimes and genocide through international courts.
That is not an equivalency.
Could Bob Vylan have chosen better words, sure. Is it actual incitement to violence, No.

Mainly because of ignorance, but sometimes because of out and out bigotry - hatred towards Israel (any section of) will translate to hatred towards Jews.

And so the circle of prejudice continues.

I think the welfare bill this evening is still garnering plenty of attention.

Article in the Guardian with which I totally agree.

It is if you choose to look Oreo this thread, with two topics referenced by the OP, is primarily focused on the one.

GrannyGravy, the decision to arrest and prosecute crimes is the responsibility of the police and the Crown Prosecution Service.
This is nothing to do with the Prime Minister.

Galaxy Tue 01-Jul-25 16:14:30

For Owen Jones to be pontificating on people being arrested for words is beyond hypocrisy.

I am perfectly aware of that, but it wouldn’t stop the tabloid headlines of Two Tier Keir
