I bet more poor people think greater equality would be highly desirable too but somehow we need to move from thinking to doing…. Wwm2

New ^left^ political party?
(249 Posts)Suspended Labour MP Zarah Sultana is all over the media since the 10pm news last night.
She has announced that along with Jeremy Corbyn she is launching a new political party to heal a broken Westminster
Are there still enough Corbynistas to get this of the ground?
Will it cause the current Labour Front Bench to have a rethink on its direction?
Yes, many very wealthy people think that greater equality in a country is highly desirable, for all sorts of reasons.
Yes, I've never understood the 'champagne socialist' jibe. Why shouldn't someone with expensive tastes or a decent income want others to have a better deal?

I'd love to know how much Jeremy Corbyn is actually worth. For all he hates being reminded of this and plays it down, his parents owned a six bedroomed house and he was educated at an independent school. I bet both Jezza and his eccentric brother had a nice big inheritance when that was sold, and also he'd have made a fair amount as opposition leader. Makes you laugh when a lot of these far left types actually come from very well off backgrounds.
You don’t have to be a “type” to believe in a left wing ideology.
You can be vastly wealthy or live in extreme poverty and everything in between.
Wealth is not the same as high income.
People seem to be muddling it.

Forgive my innocence but … the idea of cryptocurrency is to make a big profit put simply??
Not only good, but powerful. Wish that money did make them have 'good' feelings.
Thanks, Casdon (and AI)
So that is some $33 to $44 trillion sitting in accounts doing absolutely nothing, except perhaps making its owners feel good.
To put that into context, this is the AI response on offshore bank accounts.
‘Estimates for the total amount of financial assets held in offshore bank accounts worldwide vary widely, but range from $21 to $32 trillion. Due to the secrecy surrounding these accounts, pinpointing an exact figure is difficult according to the Tax Justice Network. Some estimates suggest that multinational corporations hold an additional $12 trillion in empty corporate shells offshore.’
3.41trillion US dollars invested in crypto worldwide

Yes Parsley3 or is it the case that living in the UK isn’t the environment that appeals? For high achievers, the Middle East seems to offer a very positive can do environment. The opposite of Labour Party policy in fact. I am intrigued by this polarisation.
Rich people are not all high achievers. Some are just lucky to have inherited their fortune and are living comfortably off the investment interest. Still I suppose if some of the wealthy high achievers are still working and don't want to pay UK taxes then they can do what they like.

I don’t think dosh is in offshore accounts but is in crypto currency and Web3 or something quite incomprehensible Maremia
That's odd because I read recently that UK citizens own about £854 billion in offshore wealth.

(There are other sources if you Google.)
Sorry Casdon, I see you've already made that point.

I'm really wondering what makes a person a "high achiever". I know plenty of high achievers who wouldn't dream of leaving the UK. Or did you mean high earners? They're really not the same group of people.
And a bit off topic, I know, but IMO it’d be an excellent thing if all potential MPs were required to have worked for at least 5 years in a sector that is not local council/local government/ trade union official.
What is wrong with those posts?
What sectors do you have in mind for potential MPs to have worked in?
I certainly think that the route to being an MP should not be PPE or Politics degree, followed by working as an advisor to an MP, then straight into becoming an MP. A wider range of experience should matter.
I also don't think that running a business would be a good background. Government is not a business. Government should be providing essential services for all the population, caring for the wellbeing of the disadvantaged, distribution of resources to achieve a smaller inequality gap and competent handling of the economy. Business managers don't really 'get' part of that...
The furthest left Labour government that the UK has ever had, the Atlee government, made radical changes that worked towards achieving the caring objectives. People regard it positively these days...
IMO it will just split the Labour vote. Further-left parties don’t tend to do well in the U.K. anyway.
I’m afraid Farage will pick up a lot of votes, since he will ‘do a Trump’ in promising to tackle the issues that what they like to call ‘ordinary people’ are concerned about. So yes, the boats and immigration in general, among others.
In recent decades, the ‘right-thinking’ Labour elite have too often dismissed the concerns of ‘ordinary’ people, labelling them ignorant, thick, bigoted, etc.

Whether that’d produce enough suitable applicants is the question, though.
Just to add, nobody from the UK who I know, who has worked or is currently working out there, sees it as their permanent home - they are there because they can make money. There’s nothing to stop them doing that, but let’s not dress it up as something it isn’t.

These are the people who are driven by money ronib. Not only high achievers work in the Middle East, and not all high achievers leave the UK.
I’m wondering about these “high achievers” taking themselves of to Dubai or other areas is the Middle East. It’s reminding me of friends of mine who took themselves off to Persia or South Africa. They lived very comfortably. While the lives of the poor and disadvantaged, oppressed in those countries continued

Our local private school is closing next week. The notion that the wealthy can afford to live here isn’t entirely true is it? They can afford to live abroad so much better it would seem.
The notion that the wealthy can't afford things doesn't make sense.
Menopauselbitch regret I dont know how to use the quote function. However in reply to you, no, I know of no regime anywhere that would match a welfare socialism ideaL
There will be very few Corbynistas at Gransnet .
Wherever the rich hide their money, it certainly doesn’t ‘trickle down’ to the ordinary folk.
