Wealthy families will have private health insurance and private education. The additional cost of 20 percent vat on school fees will have angered some. These commodities, if you like, are available in Dubai for a fraction of the cost plus there is zero tax paid on high income unlike here. It’s a case of making a few million abroad and settling back here in a few years I imagine. Why not?

I'm amazed that any very wealthy people choose to live in the UK if there are really no benefits.

I would have thought a reasonably temperate climate, some beautiful scenery, relative safety, usually reliable utilities and transport infrastructure, freedom of speech most of the time, freedom to be LGBT, equality (in theory) for women, the security of the NHS in case you have a serious accident, freedom to go on to a balcony without falling off and much else would be seen as benefits.

It doesn’t seem to be the best advertisement for the Uk under Labour to have the most able running away. This country needs all to contribute towards a better future for all the population. MaizieD

Contrary to what you think, ronib, the 'most able' people in the Uk are not 'running away. See the link I posted earlier. If some are doing so then we have plenty of 'able' people to replace them. And, wealth is no indication of 'ableness', however you might like to kid yourself.

The very intellectually able are not immune to the challenges of family life and may see the UK heading in a direction unacceptable to them. When you have more options than most, you will use them. It’s a great pity that Labour is alienating this group imo.

Many of ‘the wealthy’ generate jobs , though and it would not be good if too many left, unless they come to Australia of course.

The very intellectually able are not the same group as those who are moving to places like Dubai with the aim of avoiding high taxes, because generally money does not motivate them.

Of course, if we could motivate those who want to leave by any means other than protecting their financial privilege to an unreasonable degree, ie one which results in poorer and lower middle income taxpayers having to bear the brunt we should do so, but otherwise not

They may generate jobs, but they aren't too keen on sharing much of the profits the jobs generate with the workers whose labour they depend on to make their profits. 'Nor are they too keen on contributing to the society that provides the services which educate their workers and keep them healthy, and the infrastructure, both physical and legal which makes it easy for them to generate the 'wealth'. Money inexorably flows up to them. No way does it 'trickle down' to the rest of the population.

Not only that, but people can live just about anywhere in the world and invest in the UK. Many of the UK's biggest companies have foreign owners.

Errr ... no. It was a genuine question. You didn't know how to create wealth. You knew how to make yourself wealthy, which isn't the same thing.

And without the wealthy/very able exactly what is the net gain? Money doesn’t inexorably flow up - it’s hard graft and not everyone can work that hard for all sorts of reasons. But for those who do, there’s no excuse to overtax and under provide on essential services. Dubai operates on a four and a half working week and that’s another incentive to work there. Also it’s a safe low crime environment.

The few that might leave, if a wealth tax is implemented, are not patriotic; not wedded to the UK; and would most likely be very mobile anyway.

They probably spend huge amounts on accountants that help them pay as little tax as possible, so don’t contribute that much to the overall well-being of the country.

The Patriotic Millionaires group, on the other hand, demonstrates that there are many benefits to living in the UK, as a rich person - and they are willing to do their bit to contribute to the greater good of the country. Well done to them!
