It displays more about those who feel the need to make disparaging comments on an obituary thread than any shortcomings of the deceased. Showing your true colours has never been clearer.

Exactly anniebach. I didn’t agree with his politics, but many others did. He had an interesting history before politics. He was a public servant. Thank you for your servuce (even though I disagreed )

I cannot remember when I last read such a contemptible remark by someone on GN.

Anyone with even a splinter of interest in politics, or who has ever read the news, will know, that after the explosion that so badly injured his wife Norman Tebbitt devoted most of his time to caring for his wife and doing everything he could to make her life easy. Obviously he would have had carers, in the same way David Cameron had carers to help with his profoundly disabled son, or Ed Davey has carers for his son, but in each case these politicians have devoted much of their time to caring for those in their family who are disabled.

In Norman Tebbitt's case, he felt a deep personal responsibility to his wife for what happened.

No wonder we have such dreadful politicians when those who vote them in can display such judgemental views and indifference and cruelty to those who suffer, just because they do not agree with their politics.

Obviously I don't wish anyone dead and he certainly lived to a good age. I also felt very sorry for his wife after the bombing. But I have to admit that I detested him and all the Thatcher politicians - everything they did and everything they stood for. I think they encouraged people to admire greed and selfishness and to turn away from community and compassion.

The point is he was a human being and one can surely view his difficult life with his wife with humanity without bringing in different political views.

Some views expressed on here are truly shocking by the lack of humanity shown

The prohibition on speaking ill of the dead runs deep. But most people who die are like us all ... flawed and saintly in various measures.
He was no different. His respect for and care of his wife is to be admired and I share that view. But his blind adherence to and forceful administration of
policies that have had such a profound negative impact on our society cannot simply be ignored.
He was the usual human mixed bag of qualities and faults. But his errors had far reaching consequences and he, like Thatcher, showed little compassion for those whose lives were shattered by their policies.

I know. There aren't many people I despise more than Owen Jones for example but I really hope that if God forbid anything happened to him I would have the decency not to pop onto an obituary thread and call him names.

This is not the bereavement thread, nor an obituary thread - it is under news and politics. It is fine to express concern about the actions of a man who caused people such unhappiness and who dislodged a sense of community in our country as well as to admire his virtues.

As Luckygirl points out. This is a News and Politics forum. It's a News thread, not a bereavement thread.

Of course it is fine to criticise. That's not against any guidelines. I am not stopping them calling tebbit anything they like. In return I can respond to what I think about people who say they can't begin to care because he is old and a tory.
