Just to say that Garden and Marten were mentioned because they were totally against vaccination for their daughter.

How are people getting to this stage of muddle? Social media? There's so much rubbish available, if anyone for example has any doubts about the safety of the MMR, they'll find plenty of rubbish information on SM to reinforce their doubts.

Here in France you can't go to a crèche or school unless you have been vaccinated.
Education starts at 3 in the Maternelle class and the children must be toilet trained, unless there is a medical exemption.

It is thought that many children will die of measles is this isn’t reversed.

But of course it also means other vaccines not being taken up.

Covid is one of them.

People are ready to believe absolute garbage and put their lives and their children’s lives at risk.

If a child dies of say measles when it hasn’t been vaccinated, could the parents be seen complicit?

Gordon and Marten believed the same garbage (conspiracy theories) but took it to a ridiculous level which ended in their daughters death.

I think the MMR triple vaccine still has for some parents the autism cloud hanging over it.

I remember was it a medic or journalist linking autism/neurodivergence with the vaccine in the 80/90’s.

There was a trend for those who could afford it to pay for single vaccines instead of the triple one.

Yes, but hopefully if they do succumb to measles it should be a mild case, without any of the serious complications.

Some of the problem is the way vaccines are offered nowadays. When mine were small the NHS reached out to you with an appointment at a clinic whereas nowadays in some areas such as this, it’s dependent on parents remembering to get it done.

The system is also fractured in that some GP surgeries provide it while others have to attend a ‘hub’, all of course dependent on being able to get an appointment in the first place at one of the sessions they hold. In this area, if you miss a session, that’s it, there’s no catch up programme so you might have to wait months for the next session. Also, with many parents both working it can be hard to make the time to attend an appointment and it can easily slip the mind.

Of course I support children having vaccines but if you want a high take up, you need to make it easy, not put barriers in the way.

Unfortunately many migrants are arriving without any vaccination history.

Now more than ever we need to be vaccinating our children.

Agree. Few people in the western world will have seen children dying of infectious diseases these days. Probably mainly the oldest of us.

Somebody was pointing out the other day the number of anti-vaxxers he knows who are queuing up for slimming vaccinations despite the fact they have no idea how those work either and don't consider them to be vaccinations.

Devorgilla Wasn't there an episode of ER years ago where the doctors were shocked by a child presenting with measles because none of them had ever seen a case before? I know Scarlet Fever seems to have mutated into an illness that just seems to need antibiotics and a couple of days off school (my father was in an isolation hospital for 6 weeks when he had it) but imagine suddenly having an epidemic of diphtheria. We'd be straight back in the 19th century

I used to nurse some people who had had polio when they were children. All left unable to walk.

I remember as a student nurse in the late 60's two very young children being admitted with diphtheria. The parents didn't believe in vaccinations and as the GP had never seen a case before diagnosis, was, unfortunately delayed, one child died within a short time after admission in extreme distress and the other some hours later. My children had and grandchildren get vaccination offered.

What was also interesting was the extreme case of the parents who were found guilty of manslaughter of their daughter.

They has entirely bought into all the conspiracy theories, that the state, big pharmacy, etc were out to get them.

Reporters said that they had never experience or reported anything like it.

The couple were in fact quite wealthy, with the mother having trusts in her name etc, but they lived homeless (or in their words “off the grid” so that “they” (big brother I assume) couldn’t trace them. They lived in constant fear, and were frightened to access any money which is why in the final analyses the poor little soul died.

Utterly tragic. Almost like a mental illness.

The only equivalent thing I can remember, was a child who died of starvation, because the parents belonged to a peculiar religious sect and only ate fruit. That was in London I think.

Parents are relying on their 'feelings' about the dangers of vaccination and ignoring factual evidence, at risk to their children's lives, and we are now seeing the consequences.

I agree with the French system - children should not able to start nursery or school without the appropriate vaccines. That would galvanise parents into ‘remembering’ to get it done.

Herd immunity requires a high percentage of vaccine uptake - in the 90%+ area.

The poor child who died recently lived in Liverpool where only 74% of children have had the measles vaccine (according to Sky News) and cases are currently circulating.

As other posters have said, this generation of young parents have grown up never experiencing harmful childhood infectious diseases - thankfully, due to vaccinations.

But they need to know that, without vaccine uptake, these awful illnesses will return. No-one wants that!

That is true. In particular TB had been more or less eradicated until new arrivals started to bring it in.

My dd2 was born in Abu Dhabi where a TB jab was routine for new babies, since it was endemic in an area with many thousands of workers from the sub-continent.

Babies were also routinely given the MMR at 12 months - so much more sensible IMO than waiting (then in the U.K.) until 14 or so.

All new born babies registered with a GP are automatically called in for their routine checks/injections via their mothers details. No excuse to claim they don't know. All young mothers have a phone, it pops up as a text or email plus on NHS app.
A friend who is a GP, comments those parents who don't have their children vaccinated therefore opening them up to serious illnesses, should be prosecuted for Child abuse.
