Please no!
His concert raised a lot for charity which was brilliant. The rest in the past, not so. Certainly not his name over the Airport, we have enough problems with the bin strikes.

Oh ye gods, now Orly’s being a knob!

WithNobsOn How many times have you been to 'naff' Birmingham? If the answer is none, please don't come. We don't want people here who insult our city. So stay away (with nobs on).

I visited Birmingham many years ago when my husband was staying there, on a course for his job. No big shopping mall etc then. We walked along the canal and I really liked it.
It isn’t imperative to knock everything, you know. You may not like a place particularly, but is it necessary to say so? Does it make you feel good?
I agree with Kate1949.

We went on a trip by canal boat years ago. I saw parts of Birmingham I'd never seen before.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping the name of the airport as it is.

Anything else is pandering to fleeting, popular, shallow culture.

I think all this fuss about Ozzy Osbourne had me cringeing to be honest.

I did not like his music at all and cannot belive how brainwahed and jump on the Celeb bandwagon people have now become.

If you want to celebrate naffBirmingham. How about Jasper Carrot, Crossroads

Is he really the best example of a Brummie?

I was sorry when he died as he was part of my younger life. I was a bit of a rock chic and loved heavy metal. He seems to have been well loved by a lot of people, but when you delve further into it, it doesn’t make pleasant reading. He admits that he was very abusive to his first wife and especially his adopted son, who he said in his autobiography he would hit round the head for no reason. He once shot 17 cats in a drug stupor, and set fire to a chicken coop. The one remaining chicken he killed with a sword. He famously bit the head of a bat and a dove, and tried to strangle Sharon. No doubt he was remorseful, but he’s no role model in my eyes.

How ridiculous. John Lennon Airport is as bad.

Must be a leg pull.

Must be a leg pull.

If they are foolish enough to have a public vote it’s a dead cert.

They have said they won't be changing it. They are thinking of a mural or as some members of the public said when interviewed 'a Muriel.'

I read in a newspaper yesterday that he shot his wife’s 16 cats and laughed about it. Also he took pleasure in shooting any animal that ventured onto his land. Must have been in the US.
Nasty.

And Sharon stayed with him? wow! Do you have a link to this?

And yet Peta posted this

Kandinsky

grin
Considering ‘Paranoid’ is the only song 85% of the population know of his, it’s not a great name for an airport.
They could use his initials like ‘JFK’ I suppose - but ‘OO’ airport doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.
Wonder what his middle name is?

I couldn’t name a single song by him or Black Sabbath.
I think it would be silly to name an airport after him.

Kate1949 Tue 05-Aug-25 12:40:16

He was John Michael Osbourne.

Slade were from Birmingham and I was much more into them than Black Sabbath though I have great respect for the Sabbath’s music.
So how about Noddy airport??
After the great and thankfully not yet late Noddy Holder 🤣

None of the members of Slade are from Birmingham, most of them are from Wolverhampton and Noddy Holder is from Walsall.

JaneJudge Tue 05-Aug-25 12:53:35

Black Sabbath were arguably more successful in the US. I have never thought Birmingham naff (what is particularly naff about it?) but on any given thread there is always Birmingham, Liverpool or Newscastle snobbery and not even confined to Gransnet. Maybe it makes people feel superior?

JaneJudge Tue 05-Aug-25 12:54:59

Roy Wood was from Birmingham too (only mentioning as it's the same era of music)

JaneJudge Tue 05-Aug-25 12:56:05

I feel now I have to mention Jeff Lynne blush

Kate1949 Tue 05-Aug-25 13:00:21

We've always had a bad press here in Birmingham. Even this year on holiday when we told someone where we came from. He said 'Oh dear. I bet you can't wait to get back to all the stinking rubbish in the streets'. I said the only stinking rubbish I have seen is on news reports where they go to the worst possible areas. Such ignorance. This photo is Birmingham city centre.

I shouldn’t speak ill of the dead, but he sounds like a nasty and unhinged person. Look what he did to Sharon.
I’m sorry, but I can’t care that a person like that is no longer here.
I do feel sorry for his family though. They seem to be missing him a lot

I didn’t know all that about him. In that case, he was 10 times worse than I thought! What a dreadful, pathetic, cruel and probably deranged man. And some people expect us to mourn him? No chance where I’m concerned.

Oreo Tue 05-Aug-25 18:18:48

That’s what drugs can do to a person.
He’s no role model that’s for sure.
