BBC report

“Israel has faced mounting criticism over the 22-month-long war with Hamas, with UN-backed experts warning of widespread famine unfolding in the besieged territory.

On Tuesday members of an international group of former leaders known as "The Elders" for the first time called the war in Gaza an "unfolding genocide" and blamed Israel for causing famine among its population.

Following a visit to the Gaza border, Helen Clark and Mary Robinson, a former prime minister of New Zealand and a former president of Ireland, said in a joint statement: "What we saw and heard underlines our personal conviction that there is not only an unfolding, human-caused famine in Gaza. There is an unfolding genocide."

Don’t agree that it’s about wiping out Palestinians - it’s about the status of the Palestinian State. Babs03. Palestine through the actions of Hamas will never be allowed independent statehood in Israel. That’s just the way it is….
Mahmoud Abbas isn’t Hamas he governs the West Bank.

He isn’t Palestinian ? ronib spoke of “not wiping out Palestinians , but the Palestinian State “

ronib Sat 30-Aug-25 09:05:43

Yes this is true Babs03 but Netanyahu has his own agenda for Palestine. It will not coexist on equal terms with Israel or that seems to be the aim. I guess Netanyahu has made a tactical error in silencing Abbas at the UN.

I recently listened to a Jew from Israel, he said “Jews have nowhere else to go”, remembering their history of persecution helps one understand this

ronib Sat 30-Aug-25 09:46:02

Palestinians also?

ronib Sat 30-Aug-25 09:46:25

Nowhere to go?

Jews, Muslim countries

silverlining48 Sat 30-Aug-25 10:21:22

Nonsense. Jews had somewhere to go, they had Israel, but it was never enough, they have been taking Palestinians land by force for decades and appear to want it all now.
Hence the current situation.
As for USA cancelling the visa of Abass the leader of the West Bank … shame on both USA and Israel.

Yes, and if Palestinian Hamas takes Israel, which they have spoken of much? The River To The Sea!

Just how realistic do you suppose it is for Hamas to take Israel, a first world country with nukes, one of the biggest armies, a dome of iron and the backing of a super power?
C’mon Annie just look at the moonscape that us Gaza and the untouched streets of Israel and tell me who is taking who’s land here.

Palestine has not taken over any part of Israel in the last 80 years.

Its Israel with all the power and the unquestioning financial and military support of USA that has been very busy expanding its territory with extreme violence from the start.

14 Israeli incursions into Gaza in the last 20 years alone, killing thousands of Palestinians. How many times does it have to be repeated that 7 October did not come out of the blue.

There is no excuse for the atrocities of 7th Oct., but understanding the context is what would help an intelligent government work out a peaceful way forwards as the UK government did with the GFA.
History tells us that when people are oppressed/refused their human rights that sooner or later they will rise up and commit unspeakable acts.
When Britain occupied Palestine in the 1930s/1940s, Jewish terrorist groups committed atrocities against British forces. This is well documented and anyone who cares to google it will find all the info they need.

Sorry silverlining meant to start my post with the words ‘I agree with you’.

It's hard to take but I think the end is inevitable now. Trump is with Israel to further his own wealth and power.
The 'comprehensive plan' that says the war will be over in four months is well underway.
I have to hope that the US when it moves into Gaza will treat the Palestinians better than Israel but I think life will be hard for them under both those regimes.

silverlining48 Sat 30-Aug-25 11:19:08

Thanks Babs, glad about that.

I think Gazans will have a better future than if they had stayed under the thumb of hamas. They weren’t having a great life up to two years ago, not at all.

ronib am not so sure about a ‘tactical error’ with the PA not being invited to the UN to speak, I think there’s lots going on that we don’t know about.

Anniebach Sat 30-Aug-25 12:18:11

Aid centres being built South Gaza, Hamas saying “don’t move”

ronib Sat 30-Aug-25 13:09:47

Oreo well as a general rule of life, I always thought it was good to hear all voices?

silverlining48 Sat 30-Aug-25 16:43:18

Although life must have been difficult, particularly because they were not able to get out of the 25 x 4 mile Gaza Strip without lengthy waits for Israel to decide whether or not to accede to their request ….in general I believe lives in Gaza were as ok as possible despite the regular incursions by the Israelis.
There were hospitals schools, universities, cinemas , cafes, restaurants, that most of us need, and even an airport though long closed now, provided and maintained by Hamas who presumably needed to reconstruct buildings when destroyed by Israeli bombs over the years.
So their only restriction was Israel with total control of their freedom of movement. I remember seeing heavily pregnant women requiring vital medical treatment in better equipped hospitals being kept waiting outside in the heat for up to 2 days for permission to leave. Think a little about how that might feel.We would hate to be in what has been termed the biggest open air prison in the world.

Any child who sees what these children have seen , have lost what and who they have lost, can neither forget nor forgive, and so it will go on. Israel is never going to live in peace and has lost the protection from criticism which despite breaking international law so often, they have always been able to depend on but I don’t think they care as long as USA are their friend.
I am so disappointed in our government and the BBC too, both presumably being pressurised by others to ‘stay onside’.
Shame on them.

AGAA4 Sat 30-Aug-25 16:50:47

I agree with everything you have said silverlining. Life will never be as good as it was before the war for the Palestinians despite being very controlled by Israel.

Anniebach Sat 30-Aug-25 16:58:41

Today I saw a video of a family attacked 7th October 2023, the woman of the family spoke of the killing of her husband and one of her sons, seeing the two children today, it surely will cause anger in Israel, the Hamas men are evil, the boys saw their father being murdered yet still called for their Daddy.

That is horrible Annie.
I saw a documentary about the attacks and was beyond the pale.
Just as horrible are the deaths of innocent Palestinians, and now mothers too hungry to provide milk for their newborns who cry until they are too weak to do so anymore.

silverlining48 Sat 30-Aug-25 17:16:09

Of course they do, as do Palestinian children. No children should suffer the trauma that they have, which will be lifelong.

I have to say your inability to see anything at all to criticise about Israels disproportionate behaviour both before and after 7 October very hard to understand.

silverlining48 Sat 30-Aug-25 17:22:16

That’s obviously to Annie.

Annie surely you see that what happened to innocent Israelis on 7th Oct is the same as what is happening to innocent Palestinians.
Just as Israeli families mourn their dead, so do Palestinians. They love their babies and children just the same.
