Trump is full of words but whether he will achieve anything I don’t know.

He could walk away and blame Zelensky.

No because he's Putins buddy, Putin helped him win the election.

He made it clear whose side he's on when he spoke to Zekenski like he was a child.

Trump wants to make money and look like the all mighty powerful leader and if he can't then he's not interested.

Going back to promises...
As ronib says we didn't keep ours to Ukraine either.

I think that may well happen☹️
Seeing Putin get the red carpet treatment and contrasting that with how Zelensky was last treated by Trump in the oval office is very worrying.

TBH I think Trump supports Putin.

I agree. I think it's already a done deal that Russia will get what it wants.

Trump has one concern only . Donald Trump. What can he get for himself whether it is yet more ill gotten gains, a nobel prize which he would never in a month of sundays be worthy of,. Why would anyone trust someone who is a liar, molests women, cant be trusted or believed as he changes his mind with the wind. Other dictators have at least made decisions which you can decide on one way or another. You have to walk on the left on thursday or wear a burkah or whatever. This lunatic cannot even remember what he decided yesterday and changes his mind from day to day. He thinks he has the right to tell sovereign countries that he is going to take them over - like he did with Greenland - I was there at the time and can tell you that there was only a two fingered gesture and not one person I spoke to wanted to belong to his group of trigger happy kkk type people even if there were asked not told!! The parallels with Hitler, claiming other peoples land and thinking he has a right to just walk roughshod over other nations , is obvious.
The only possible other explanations for his changes of mind every other day and conveniently forgetting what he said last week is that he is starting with dementia. The best excuse you could offer for his behaviour. Why is any right thinking person following this appalling person who even suggested that people should attack their own government, if he does not get his own way. To think that he is even allowed to decide anything is both terrifying and appalling. Time countries banded together and said that they will not accept his appalling arrogant behaviour. To think that in years to come someone could say that they supported him. They would hide such a dirty secret. He thinks he has the right to interfere with other countries situations but is stupid enough to think that Putin gives a toss what he says and will carry on his appalling bombing of Ukraine to suit his own ends. For heavens sakes lets get some intelligent and reasonable people to deal with the problems there are and keep him out of it

CNN Witkoff doing the Sunday political round has said that the Russians - in Alaska - agreed to a NATO type security arrangement with the USA and Europe for Ukraine.

Thst is massive as Russia hasn’t moved sn inch on this for decades.

Mind you Witkoff doesn’t know his arse from his elbow, so he might be wrong - as proved the case on his last visit to Russia.

It is beginning to look like a possible NATO type article 5 is on the table, so Ukraine will be able to count on the USA and Europe in the event of Putin attacking after peace is restored.

Not too bad, as Putin won’t be around for ever, and ukraine can always if it wishes apply to NATO once Putin has gone and things have calmed down.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 18-Aug-25 07:58:14

I think the most important thing now is to make clear to both Trump and Putin that Ukraine is a Partner in the full sense of the word. Europe has now taken over from the USA in support of Ukraine both financially and militarily.

We must then sort out the military aspect around Europe. The point being that whether or not we are ready, we must be ready in order to defend Europe snd our interests. Our troops must be fully prepared and given everything they need to defend ourselves. Finland and Poland have done it now we must all follow.

ronib Mon 18-Aug-25 08:25:10

Well what a lovely play on words - a NATO type article 5 but still a complete prohibition on joining NATO.
Ukraine has had assurances from the UK and USA before. Do you think Zelensky will agree ? Seems a bit down the rabbit hole to me.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 18-Aug-25 08:40:35

Yes I do think he will agree.

NanKate Mon 18-Aug-25 08:42:25

I’m pleased Zelensky has support at his meeting with weasel Trump, but I don’t feel any optimism about the outcome. Trump has made it clear he has moved over to the dark side and is under Putin’s control.

The thought of traitor Trump coming over to the U.K. soon must fill the King with horror.

AGAA4 Mon 18-Aug-25 08:48:08

Putin wants the Donbas area in Ukraine. Trump will probably urge Zelensky to agree.
This is serious as taking land from another country opens the door to more land being taken in future.

Smileless2012 Mon 18-Aug-25 08:49:07

If he doesn't agree, Trump will blame him for there being no end in site to this war because he's already said that it's up to Zelensky to bring this about, but why should he? He can't trust Trump anymore than he can trust Putin.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 18-Aug-25 08:53:31

Whether or not this NATO type guarantee comes into force, Ukraine definitely needs some sort of security guarantee, and unfortunately at present the USA must be part of that guarantee.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 18-Aug-25 08:56:47

Zelensky can’t agree to any land be in given to Putin, because it is against the Ukrainian constitution.

Someone mentioned a sort of loan affair (?)

In my view we definitely do not want a repeat of the last two wars where might grabbed land.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 18-Aug-25 09:09:49

I guess that with all this talk about security guarantees, land etc the first and most important thing is to secure a ceasefire.

Then everything can flow 🤞 from there.

AGAA4 Mon 18-Aug-25 10:14:48

I doubt Putin will agree to ceasefire till he gets what he wants and Zelensky won't give him the Donbas area.

AGAA4 Mon 18-Aug-25 10:17:35

I'm glad the European leaders will be there to make sure Trump doesn't bully Zelensky as he has before.

polnan Mon 18-Aug-25 10:23:50

me too AGAA4

Whitewavemark2 Mon 18-Aug-25 11:36:03

Tbh I’m not very optimistic.

Deep down, I really do believe that Putin has Trump in his pocket for whatever reason, and so Trump has no room for manoeuvre whatsoever outside of Putins demands.

The only way is for Europe to go it alone - which I think has been the conclusion of the leaders for a while now.

But we can always hope.

David49 Mon 18-Aug-25 11:44:42

In Alaska Putin made it crystal clear that he wants Ukraine neutral, it’s really hard to imagine how any form of security guarantee from NATO is going to be compatable.

Allira Mon 18-Aug-25 11:49:35

he wants Ukraine neutral
But - what does Ukraine want?

I want Russia to stop being aggressive and militant. So does Ukraine so does Europe.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 18-Aug-25 11:57:54

Ukraine is a sovereign country - it makes its own decision re - neutrality!

David49 Mon 18-Aug-25 13:06:06

Allira

^he wants Ukraine neutral^

Ukraine says they want to join NATO so Russia invaded them and will only stop fighting if they stay neutral.

That is the de facto position, it’s not about the rights and wrongs, Russia is wrong but they are winning the war.

Smileless2012 Mon 18-Aug-25 15:43:25

So why can't a peace agreement include that if Russia were to attack in the future, Ukraine would automatically become a member of NATO?
