Well round here the flags flying high & proud, from one end of the town to other. More have been added in the last two days. It must be costing a fortune.
I have to say though, it’s great sight to see.

Would you fly a flag for your country?
(823 Posts)I was born in England but am of Irish heritage, I am proud of both England and Ireland.
My daughter lives on the outskirts of a village that has scores of union flags flying, it lifts my spirits as we drive in.
On a recent trip to Norway I loved seeing all the homes flying their flag and wondered why we don’t have same sense of patriotism.
I will fly a flag, I’m going to order a pole and we will fly the flag my husbands grandparents flew on their flagpole on VE Day.
I am not a racist, our grandchildren are mixed race, we have friends who are Congolese, Sri Lankan, Egyptian etc.
I am however British and very proud, we need to reclaim our flag and our pride.
Lots voted Labour because they felt the Tories let them down on immigration this isnt just something that came out of nowhere, many of us are not the least surprised
I think the Tory voters turned to Reform. Some of the Tory MP’s did because they feared losing their seats (and income). No real political conviction, just self serving behaviour.

Maybe get rid of some of the Pride nonsense, such as rainbow pedestrian crossings, positively dangerous. Remove unauthorised flags whether they be St George, Palestinian or anything else that could be deemed a distraction to motorists depending on where they are placed. If there were more of an even-handed approach to some of that, it might go some way towards not flying flags in inappropriate places. There is a perception that some causes are lauded and their regalia is permissible, whilst the national flag is something that shouldn't be too visible.
“Pride nonsense”?

^Using it to intimidate others or “scent marking” is disgusting and (in my humble opinion) totally unacceptable^
Cossy does this apply to the flag of Pakistan being flown outside Birmingham Council `offices, the Ukrainian flag, the Palestinian flags popping up all over the place, the pride flags etc.,
Or just the English and Union flags?
It applies to the use of ANY flags, not just limited to our own flags, however our flags have been hijacked by a few far right organisations, in my opinion.

We don’t hear anything about the disaster Brexit has been or the lies behind it either. We are much less competitive as a country and we wonder why our economy is as it is. The majority of the press is ‘populist’ and sadly doesn’t present challenging, fact based arguments.
Nor do we hear much about how Farage has praised Andrew Tate even citing him as his source for the misinformation that caused the street riots in Southport.
Farage is never challenged about anything. My ex has studied the Reform manifesto and says it is totally unworkable. And yet the electorate are being brainwashed into thinking he and his party are the only ones who can ‘save’ this country. Farage who gave us Brexit, the greatest act of self harm that any country has ever inflicted upon itself.

How very rude
It is hilarious. The progressives are very cross.
I do wonder how many ways they can say 'these are the stupid people'.

You made me smile with that one Galaxy. If you’re right at least everybody , whichever side they are on knows exactly what ‘the others’ think of them now, no pussyfooting around anymore.
I don’t think you’re right though, I think there as many shades of grey as there are about everything else.
Mmm I think there used to be shades of grey but I think it is slowly moving very clearly to two seperate camps, I don't want to be in either of them

Really? That might be the impression when extreme points of view are on here, but in real life it’s not such an important issue to most people despite all the hype. There are no doubt some places where rashes of flags are appearing, but as somebody who drives an awful lot, it’s not endemic, and normal life goes on. I’m a fetching shade of mid grey ombré myself on flags, we are definitely out there.
I think there as many shades of grey as there are about everything else.
I agree.
Incidentally, are there any grey flags?
No, unless there are touches of grey anywhere on a flag.
Flags are brightly coloured and a symbol of national pride. Nothing to be ashamed of and should not be appropriated by extremist groups.
Ours need to be reclaimed.
Perhaps we should market that idea Allira - display our moderate and mixed views with grey flags - if everybody in the country had to choose a flag, I’d bet there would be more grey flags than anything else.

As has been said many times on this thread, by more flag flying.I would be happy with public buildings flying them all the time, bunting across village and town squares in Summer and any private citizens who have a flagpole.

And wouldn’t that be dreary!

Grey is not my colour, Casdon, it makes me look washed out.
Anyway, which shade of grey, apparently there are about fifty?

The proles are getting above themselves😄 that’s the general feeling isn’t it? Brexit all over again.
Shshhhhh, we mustn’t be proud of our own country, oh no there’s a flag over there, cringe!😬🏴
The St George's Cross and the Union flag have been brought into disrepute by rowdies who exhibit unreasoned support for extreme right wing.
That is why many reasonable people won't be flying the flags they have a right to fly.
Flying the UK flag doesn't always mean someone’s extra-patriotic.
For some, it’s just a way to show pride or be part of the crowd. For others, it might be more about personal identity or even making a political statement.
True patriotism is often deeper - it’s about how you live, support your community, and stand up for the values you believe in. So, waving a flag can be part of it, but it’s not the whole story.
Yes - entirely appropriate on a public building, St George flag entirely appropriate on Church of England as the Saltire is on Church of Scotland. Fine when sports teams are playing and at on ‘special days’ - but the rampant nylon flags soon to be shredded by wind and rain is tasteless and tacky and clearly not intended to beautify a town or welcome all people.
How much nicer to plant flowers in streets and pay for hanging baskets to be attached to lamp posts along roads. Building community and beautifying our streets is a far more positive way to demonstrate the love of your country.
Sadly that goon Farage and his followers wouldn’t think of anything positive and uplifting that might teach the next generation what pride in their community should look like.
