Would you fly a flag for your country?

I was born in England but am of Irish heritage, I am proud of both England and Ireland.

My daughter lives on the outskirts of a village that has scores of union flags flying, it lifts my spirits as we drive in.

On a recent trip to Norway I loved seeing all the homes flying their flag and wondered why we don’t have same sense of patriotism.

I will fly a flag, I’m going to order a pole and we will fly the flag my husbands grandparents flew on their flagpole on VE Day.

I am not a racist, our grandchildren are mixed race, we have friends who are Congolese, Sri Lankan, Egyptian etc.

I am however British and very proud, we need to reclaim our flag and our pride.

Actors used to anglicise their names. Doesn't happen so much now.

During the 1980s-1990s I knew a middle aged Jewish couple (Humanists)who anglicised their Jewish name for pragmatic reasons.

What exactly are you proud of?

Sago I don't feel that flying a flag has anything to do with love of one's country to be honest.

Neither do I.

I am quite proud that we allow women education and freedom. I am quite proud we don't kill gay people for who they choose to love, I could go on.

Maybe on a special day like the Coronation .I made a patriotic looking dress to wear in London.
I love England/UK and also a staunch European. I feel though that the flag has been largely appropriated by racists and those who are full of hate for immigrants. Yes the numbers should be controlled but these people are organised and just plain nasty. I have family working in one of the so called luxury hotels ( it's clean but basic, they have meals but don't spend the day there, have the huge sum of £9 a week for anything they need) My relative is discouraged from talking about where she works for fear of attack.
So flag waving, strictly on public buildings, sport, and the Royal family until the country becomes a bit less toxic.

I disagree.

Just look at how the Ukrainian people and their supporters fly the Ukrainian flag here - it is because they love their country, are devastated at what is happening there and many will want to go back one day.

So really, it’s only the English flag that is raising objections.

Yes
I struggle with the notion of deporting a man who claims to be gay, to a country where he’d be thrown off a high rise for being gay

Mind you. What about the women of Afghanistan who have little or no chance of escaping to Europe. They are so diminished by the Taliban that their bodies remain under the earthquake rubble . Their existence is being obliterated,

No, it's not a flag, it's the fact that it has been mobilized by one or two manipulative extreme right wing leaders and a load of gammons are up for a scrap.

Iam64 Sat 06-Sept-25 20:45:59

Isn’t it odd though, are we the only country where nasty bigots can weaponise our flag? Our village is festooned with union flags and some county flags. It brightens the centre up and we’ve had no awful people stirring triubkr (yet)

Galaxy Sat 06-Sept-25 20:51:37

Load of gammons
How lovely the progressives are.

They are at war. As yet we are not. If we were I'm sure there would be flags on the top of heaps of rubble. Flags have always been used to pass messages. However, such messages should come under the freedom of speech limitations on freedom of expression.m

Galaxy Sat 06-Sept-25 21:03:25

You think people shouldn't be allowed to fly flags because of the thoughts they may hold in their head?

Iam64 Sat 06-Sept-25 21:24:12

That’s the big problem for me Galaxy, this distorted belief that people supporting the national flags do so with dark thoughts and bigotry in their hearts
Yes some people will be ranking up division and fear but what about the rest
It’s like saying people can’t think, just follow the DM and Reform. That all flag supporters are lesser and it’s best to be ashamed of English history and flags
It’s never so simple imo

Galaxy Sat 06-Sept-25 21:33:18

Also, even if it was true, I don't want to live in a country where action is taken because of the thoughts in peoples heads. That is beyond terrifying to me.

I am very pleased that those things happen here. I don't know that I have a right to be proud of it though. What did I do to make them happen? Women were being educated before I was born, and whilst gay men could be imprisoned they were not being executed.

I am happy to be British - is that the same as being proud? Isn't Pride a deadly sin?

I went shopping today, didn't see any flags at all.

Galaxy Sat 06-Sept-25 21:46:12

No. That would be silly. We have freedom of expression but it is not unlimited. Various laws cover this.

Galaxy Sat 06-Sept-25 22:24:55

What laws do you think could be enacted about say for example someone putting up a flag in their home.
