Would you fly a flag for your country?

I travelled up the M6 yesterday from Birmingham to Scotland and most motorway bridges had at least one flag flying from it until I reached the Lake District

Surely it’s very dangerous to hang flags on motorway bridges. If one became detached and flew onto the windscreen of oncoming traffic it could be catastrophic.

Do the ‘flag flyers’ not care about this?

My son-in-law is British, but I wouldn't mind betting he doesn't look like you. By coincidence, I was having this discussion with him and my daughter yesterday. He showed me a picture of his maternal family - they all look different. I have no idea what you look like, but I expect I don't look much like you either - I've got pale skin though - is that what you mean?

I meant ones from a similar background, etc, etc. and am not referring to race at all.

Summed-up - intelligent-looking and middle-class. Reason = the same as anywhere else.....ie people I'm likely to have things in common with....besides the particular topic concerned.

Thinking back decades ago to 2nd heyday of CND movement for instance and I was very active in both CND and the Labour Party. I learnt that at CND events there would be the type of food I eat and so I could buy some and at CND jumblesales there would be clothes I would want to buy (got some very nice ones). At Labour Party ones = no food I fancied and nothing I wanted to buy......so I landed up hungry and wasnt able to get any bargains.

That's what I mean...we all want to be in what feels like a familiar environment to ourselves if we can...whatever that environment is/in whatever context we are.

I’ve got an EU flag, an Irish tricolour, an Italian flag, a French one, a union flag and a Royal naval Ensign in my house in a drawer somewhere, oh and I’ve got a Brazilian one. Some of these were from my dad’s time in the navy, some from my son’s football collection. I don’t intend to fly any of them. Though maybe I should fly the whole collection.

I love seeing all the flags! It’s wonderful to see so many people feeling pride in their country 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

We have an Australian one somewhere; perhaps we should raise it up the flagpole when family come over to show that they are in residence vegansrock.
Actually, we have a street lamp in our garden, no need for a flagpole.

I’ll join you vegansrock and buy a Pakistani one as I was born there, even though I’m white British, never occurred to me before now, I wonder why.

I am pretty sure my Tanzanian friend had to do this when she applied for British Citizenship. She also had to take a test.

....concluding with a little ceremony of welcome - that finishes with having to shake hands with a suitable female official (ie one very quick way to ensure men who don't wish to regard women as equal human beings get the message they have no choice if they wish to live here).

Instead of putting lots of English flags to celebrate the English, maybe a town should put up a flag for every nationality that lives there to celebrate how we can all live together and help each other.

Roads are not the place for any distractions, surely? Standardised road signs, including zebra crossings, are standardised because it makes them safer. Flags on lamp posts, painted roads etc just cause accidents because they are distractions.

I don’t agree with red crosses on roundabouts but nobody says any about pride coloured zebra crossings- police horses were having a paddy trying to cross over them from footage I watched last week.

I mentioned these rainbow zebra crossings the other day but my comment was ignored. Funny that! 🤣

I clearly said that standardised road signs, including zebra crossings, are standardised for a reason. Standardised means no flags, rainbows, pink with green spots, or whatever other version you care to name.

Don’t think that got as much media coverage as this is ( I certainly wasn’t aware of it). I’m not in favour of spraying anything, especially when the tax payer has to pay to clean it off and people could be employed doing more worthwhile things.

I would, but would attach an angled pole to my house, as actual free standing poles need planning permission in my area.

I would fly a flag and have in the past. I'd like to point out though that in some places and circumstances, flag poles need planning permission. Don't get yourself into trouble!
