So called 'government policies' about 'putting a stop' to second homes, 'handouts', 'inverted snobbery', 'hiding behind false words', 'saying one thing and doing another' AR being 'gifted' the flat (!!) - all in the last couple of pages, none of it backed up. Prejudice, pure and simple, but if people hear this sort of thing often enough they come to believe it, which is the only reason I'm on this thread, which is going round in circles.

The implication has been that AR has said she would ban holiday homes. If not, where is the hypocrisy? I have asked for someone to show where she has said the government position is to prevent people from buying second homes, and nobody has done so.

I don't approve of second homes, but accept that it is AR's right to buy one, and can't see that it is hypocritical. I don't mean this personally, but I can see hypocrisy in people who do have second homes taking issue with AR having one.

We've owned various holiday homes for years, obviously we have no issue with second homes. In my opinion we buy homes others won't at a fair price, pay for maintenance and renovations.

It's a pity you're not in Devon Doodledog where we have the highest concentration of holiday homes across the land.
As stated earlier, government ministers/spokespersons often come to the area to see the problem for themselves. They appear on local tv and speak about the growing problems for local residents. The words used as promises to protect communities do most certainly use phrases like "curtail, put a stop to, prevent" the growth of the second home market here in the future. We hear this sort of thing often enough to have faith that something might happen up there in Westminster. It is a well-documented issue here, so if I really had the time, I'd find more examples to add. The situation has reached crazy proportions, seeing as we've had an increase of over 10% in second homes since 2021. I, for one, most certainly want to put a halt, end, curb (all words used by officials) to this happening for the future.

I think it is changing, even in Devon escaped, with quite a property slump in second home sales. I suspect that a significant increase in council tax would push more people over the brink and they would sell up, because most people who have holiday homes aren’t in the super rich category and will be feeling the pinch. I googled Salcombe just to see, and apparently prices there have dropped by 22% this year.
It will be interesting to see if locals do move back if they have the chance to do so, or if prices will remain too high for them long term.

When I lived in Cornwall many years ago the problem was young people moving away. Not because they couldn’t afford to buy a house there but they wanted to live somewhere more urban. The locals tended to live in the holiday cottages in winter at very cheap rent and then did season work in summer. However this was in the seventies and things have probably changed. In Northumberland as many properties are owned by the local estates as much as second home owners. And that includes many of the shops, too.

Not at all, that isn't my meaning. I said my personal experience has taught me about the problems in Devon because I both live here and have one of my holiday properties here. I wouldn't dream of commenting on other areas up country, apart from London, because I don't know what is happening there in the way of second homes destroying communities, though I am sure it is similar..

Very severe increase in taxes. IHT on second homes. Higher capital gains tax. I'm sure you understand my meaning - impact on our financials.

Well it's all about the money and what to do with it.
Im fortunate not to be feeling the pinch, but it's getting to that time in life where if the government said I could sell up without any penalties, I would give the proceeds to our children. Most people are open to incentives if they feel they are getting something in return. I think someone on here said that Angela Rayner's child lives in her constituency home. I'm guessing she has their needs in mind for the future too.

Our Devon holiday home would probably sell to retirees and that in itself brings yet another problem to the area. There is a lot of resentment towards this group too.
I'm guessing Hove properties are more appealing to the middle aged well off professionals? Interesting all the different combinations of people, dwellings and locations which make up areas.

My family is of the view that the next Autumn Budget will severely reduce the ability to give any money to beneficiaries. We’re hoping to last longer than this government but there’s no guarantee….
