Since I can’t see a thread about the Deputy PM and Housing Minister, Angela Rayner I am starting one. 😉

All the main newspapers are headlining this story but most have a paywall and this one doesn’t.

There’s no doubt she has come far from her humble beginnings but this demonstrates to me that she is very out of touch with people.

I have actually changed my views after carefully reading other posts. I have learned a lot since being on Gransnet and I will admit I was wrong if I feel I was.

Casdon Sun 31-Aug-25 11:31:29

I agree regarding links Allira, on more complex topics they send you into things you hadn’t heard of, or knew little about, and are often instrumental in moving your thinking forward. On threads like this though, I don’t think anybody changes their opinion, whatever anybody else says. It is partly because a lot of us have been on similar threads before, so we know what to expect people to say.

Allira Sun 31-Aug-25 11:36:39

Views aren't that polarised, though, Casdon.

There are a few who will defend Ms Rayner simply because she is Labour and there are a few who will castigate her because she's Labour.

The majority, I think, are just fed up of politicians in general and some, like me, are disappointed because we hoped for something better with a Labour Government but one after another is proving that wrong.

Oreo Sun 31-Aug-25 11:39:44

Maybe you’ve been on this site for a long time Casdon so have seen similar threads time and again?
In the nearly three years on here, I have seen a few but not many, and even newer posters won’t have, so it’s worth reading and posting IMO.
We all have our views on subject but worth reading opposite views still to see if there’s anything of value there to consider.

You’re right, I have been on here for a long time, and I’ve reached the point where I can spot people who’ve changed their user names by their views now Oreo. I remember what people have said before. I suppose leopards don’t change their spots, and it’s therefore time for me to bow out of this type of thread and only participate in those where new ground is being covered.

TerriBull Sun 31-Aug-25 12:06:18

Maybe it's easier to be objective if there aren't any partisan allegencies to any one political party. I've voted for the two main ones at different junctures, pretty much regretting my decision soon afterwards. Whilst I don't regard all politicians as flawed, some are good people across the political spectrum, but they often remain on the back benches. I'm often dubious about those who want power a bit too much that's often a pre requisite to a downward slippery slope. The disappointment in the immediate aftermath of a general when the electorate become aware of rank hypocrisy is the first nail in the coffin in the loss of public confidence, compounded by "we haven't done anything wrong" Fools!

They are polarised on a thread that set out to attract the small number of like-minded people on GN who felt the same way.

This is not showing anything other than a proportion if GN posters agree with misleading right-wing newspaper content.

Ahem.

Like to point out that on Saturday I posted that I had changed my view from of Angela Rayner😬

Some views are polarised and some whose views will never change under any circumstances; however, there are some who agree that most politicians are the same of whatever party and yet others who say they have changed their views.
😁

I haven't read the thread but I'm a labour voter who is disappointed with her. No one needs more than one home and holiday lets and buy to let have caused all sorts of problems in the UK. I understand people may become accidental landlords if they cannot sell an inherited home but the problems holiday lets cause in coastal communities is awful. Buy to let has presented its own problems. To rent a 3 bed semi detached family home where I live is over ÂŁ2,000. How are people affording to live

PoliticsNerd Sun 31-Aug-25 12:44:55

Well most human beings are pretty similar Allira. How are you expecting politician to be different?

I am sick, sick, sick of the “great and the good” - , people in positions of power, who set themselves up to make decisions which affect ALL our lives and are found out to have their noses in the trough- think duck houses, off shore funds, camper vans, free designer clothes even specs, dodgy deals with Arabs/Chinese, fiddled expenses (often to family members bets to “keep it in the family”) now second /third homes.Who do they think they are?
I don’t care what their political persuasion, they all seem to be in it for what they can personally line their pockets with.

I agree with this too. It appears to be the same within big organisations too. It's utterly depressing

Most politicians have two homes. One comes with the job.

It appears that Angela Raynor is in exactly that position and that a third property she owned/part-owned(?) while in a relationship, went to he ex partner on the resolution of that partnership.

What has she done wrong?

PoliticsNerd Sun 31-Aug-25 12:56:55

Sorry that should have been MPs not politicians.

Just for context Rishi Sunak and his wife together own four houses spread across the UK and the US, worth an estimated ÂŁ15 Mn. I imagine this was true when he was PM. I don't remember him being castigated for this although he was when he had the electricity grid upgraded to heat his private pool.

JaneJudge Sun 31-Aug-25 13:06:07

I can't really disagree with you PoliticsNerd as I understand the hypocrisy and I also know Angela gets a bad press, mainly because of the mere fact she is working class and northern. It still doesn't make having spare homes acceptable or normal. It's just how I feel

Many people invest excess money in homes. Well done them.

I'm curious to see proof of AR's home transactions.

My mind can be changed -- by facts.

I like Angela Rayner and admire her for what she has achieved. However, she is proving to be no different than most politicians when they become MPs. Perhaps the rules need changing if she is breaking none, but it is certain bewildering and galling to most ordinary people how they all manage to get rich so quickly.

Doesn't his wife come from a wealthy background and didn't he make money before he became an MP?
Or did he acquire those homes since he became an MP?

JaneJudge Sun 31-Aug-25 13:18:38

I've just googled and their net worth is 651m. It's just boggling isn't it? I manage a team who work a really difficult and important job and their wages don't even cover the 2k rent I mentioned earlier.

We know the cost of everything and the value of nothing

A peculiar comment Casdon
I really doubt you can tell anyone from their views on politics as there are only so many views possible and very many posters.
What do user names have to do with the price of fish anyway.
Your above comments sound very off to me.Maybe your having a bad day.
As I said already, new posters haven’t seen some subjects so threads are worth it, and threads on any politician of any political party who do dodgy stuff need commenting on.

His wife comes from an amazingly rich background. What he earned as PM was peanuts to him, no PM does it for the money.
Any politician has to be under the spotlight if there’s perceived wrongdoing/ unethical behaviour.

If I wanted to see your proof of your home transactions, would that be OK Norah?

There are proper ways of doing this, via the Standards and Intererest Committee. Allegations should be reported to them, not a newspaper. If that were the right way to do it should be possible to report our taxes, etc, in a newspaper, with no redress if they get it wrong. That is how Angela Raynor is being treated.

You, by being part of a democracy, agree to power being held by everyone through an elected government.

I did say proof. I was wrong. I'd like to read of a proper review.

"The House of Commons Committee on Standards reviews the work of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, examining arrangements for the Register of Members' Financial Interests."

No, you may not see our proper records.

HMRC certainly see our records, ascertaining taxes are proper.
