Since I can’t see a thread about the Deputy PM and Housing Minister, Angela Rayner I am starting one. šŸ˜‰

All the main newspapers are headlining this story but most have a paywall and this one doesn’t.

There’s no doubt she has come far from her humble beginnings but this demonstrates to me that she is very out of touch with people.

I expect your ideal Labour politician would be so lily white that they would sprout wings and shower rose petals on the country eazybee, rather than be a normal mortal who does just the same as other people do. Hey Ho.

Yes, I do expect better of Labour politicians!

It certainly puts Two Jags Prescott in the shade!
(Before I get attacked, I did have a soft spot for John Prescott šŸ™‚ and always regret that I wasn't able to stop to chat to him when we were in the same hotel in Hull years ago.)

I have asked HQ to amend the title of this thread but they say it doesn’t break guidelines and I need to do so on the thread itself. So I am now asking politely that the OP has the title amended as imo it is totally misleading. This, of course, won’t happen. I’m finding some aspects of gransnet pretty disgusting at the moment and am happy to be banned.

Why?
Have you broken the guidelines? Not as far as I've seen.

It's not a good look, though, for The Party of The People. And while it's said that she - and others - have not broken any rules, guidelines etc, who makes the rules?

It's rather like the situation after politicians expenses scandal - decision making for MP's salaries was handed over to an independant body. But how independant?

Hove is an hour (almost exactly) to Westminster by train.
Ashton-under-Lyne is between 3 and 5 hours.

I think she can buy a second home if she wants to.

Someone with a second home complaining because someone else has a second home. Who is the hypocrite.

Good old working class Labour, you wouldn’t read about it!

Working class must stay in their place as in the 1930’s !

Anniebach Mon 25-Aug-25 03:35:38

Some posts are unbelievable. I was brought up in a mining village in South Wakes in the 40’s, constantly stressed was ā€œeducation, education , so you don’t have to work in the mines and factoriesā€, 2025 and some should still know their place !

Allsorts Mon 25-Aug-25 07:25:55

How can anyone own three homes unless mega rich. Most struggle to own one. She is out of touch.

eazybee Mon 25-Aug-25 07:29:24

Anniebach, I am sorry; I have a great deal of respect for you, but none whatsoever for Angela Rayner.
You mention 'Education, education, education' but this is a mantra totally ignored by Rayner, who has made not the slightest attempt to remedy her complete lack of knowledge, skills and qualifications; (Ruskin College for Labour Trade unionists?).
Her position as Deputy prime minister is due entirely to Union support, not ability, yet she was unable to resolve the strikes in Birmingham and has now lost Union support.
An exponent of 'Do as I say not as I do,' or even more appropriate, 'I'm all right, Jack,; removest thou the ladder.'

escaped Mon 25-Aug-25 07:37:32

If she's got the available money to do so, I don't see anything wrong with her having a second home.

Anniebach Mon 25-Aug-25 07:55:01

eazybee I spoke of education because it was seen as the only way out of coal mines, Rayner is mocked as was Prescott , Ny Bevan, why must working classes remain in the workman’s clubs ?

ronib Mon 25-Aug-25 08:06:48

Unfortunately some Labour activists are proposing some fairly radical changes to the way property is bought and sold. Perhaps Angela Rayner has access to this information and has bought her second home in good time to avoid whatever is being planned? So it’s not the best optic as deputy PM? Or should we just not care?

Oh yes, you mean the Ā£500k+ fee changes, I hadn't thought of that point. šŸ‘

foxie48 Mon 25-Aug-25 08:18:34

Or perhaps she just wanted somewhere by the sea that was in easy reach of London. Or perhaps she's prefer to be in her own private space rather than in a government owned one when she's in London. Or perhaps she's better off now that she's in government and wants to invest for her future.I am heartily sick of this constant attempt to do the woman down both by the media and by some posters on GN when she's done nothing wrong. As far as I am aware it is perfectly legal to buy a second home and people on here, including the OP have done so.

ronib Mon 25-Aug-25 08:30:18

I think the Autumn Budget will have some pretty alarming changes to stamp duty on second homes but I don’t have privileged access…..

This is her second home.

She bought it months ago (I think it was in the spring?) so why all the fuss now?

Iam64 Mon 25-Aug-25 08:41:04

Why is it seen as positive for Primrose and others here, to own two houses but not for Angela Raynor.

Anniebach is spot on, it’s because some believe Angela R is getting above herself. The reference to the impact of her childhood on her ability to succeed at school is to be sneered at. There’s a thread running that discusses why white working class boys under achieve. The same applies to girls like the one AR was. Well done her for making use of Surestart, getting into employment and taking advantage of the educational support provided by her trade union.

And earning a nice income from it.

On the contrary. I said good luck to her if she has the money. (Though personally, I think she should have chosen Cornwall. The further away from Westminster, the better!)

TerriBull Mon 25-Aug-25 09:04:41

I think she chose Brighton/Hove because it's within striking distance of London, an hour on the train, so pretty accessible.

It's not really 3 homes though, one is a grace and favour ministerial apartment, so it isn't actually hers.

Oreo Mon 25-Aug-25 09:18:38

I don’t really care how many houses she owns, all politicians invest in the property market, however Socialist they are, I don’t really care about her poor taste in trouser suits but I do care that’s she’s in such an important position and isn’t doing much of a job.

foxie48 Mon 25-Aug-25 09:35:28

Ronib* " I do care that’s she’s in such an important position and isn’t doing much of a job."
Please can you give examples of where she has failed to do "much of a job".

Ziplok Mon 25-Aug-25 09:40:15

Casdon

She has bought a flat at the seaside, and has a house in her constituency. In London she lives in the flat allocated to her ministerial role, which she obviously doesn’t own.

How many MPs have the same arrangement- many. How many Gransnetters have a second home - quite a lot. Is it big news just because it’s Angela Rayner and the right wing press don’t like her - yes. Are we going to fall for a repeat of the Green Trousersuit thread - I sincerely hope not.

Well said, Casdon.

I’m not the Housing Minister though! šŸ˜‰
