I have asked HQ to amend the title of this thread but they say it doesn’t break guidelines and I need to do so on the thread itself. So I am now asking politely that the OP has the title amended as imo it is totally misleading. This, of course, won’t happen. I’m finding some aspects of gransnet pretty disgusting at the moment and am happy to be banned.

Since you ask foxie48 - did you mean to ask Oreo ? - one glaring example is in AR’s 1,500,000 houses to be built by the next election. But over to Oreo!

However if everyone is going to be allowed two homes as a minimum perhaps it should be 3 million as the target?

Her defence is she needs the Hove flat for its proximity to her job in London. Surely a flat in Tower Hamlets would have been more convenient.

Ooh, I like Hove, spent many happy holidays there as a child when my Aunt lived there in a flat, which came with her job but was her only home.

I would have thought that her grace-and-favour ministerial apartment in Admiralty House, Westminster is close enough for her to do the London part of her job?

Allira - I don't believe I've seen anyone applauding A second home on here to be honest.

But I do think she's allowed to have a seaside apartment as much as anyone else!

There have been heated discussions about the fairness of councils/governments charging higher council tax for people with second homes, I’m guessing that’s what Allira is referring to?

I thought we had a housing crisis? Empty properties? Must have imagined it….

But yes, there have been several from time to time

How many of our politicians of whatever party actually set a good example? I can’t think of any. Labour MP’s could sell all their property and give to the poor. As it is they want to take from the rich. All too often however it turns out to be taken from the middle class many of whom have risen from working class roots. It looks like housing is to be the next target. With private schools the rich just coughed up more money whilst middle class parents had to take their kids out of the private sector or cut back on holidays etc.

She doesn’t OWN three homes - one is a grace and favour apartment as she’s Deputy PM. Not sure that I agree with people having two houses, but it’s good to get facts right…….

She will pay 100% council tax if it is used as a second home, just like everyone else who has a second home in Brighton and Hove. She'll also pay capital gains tax if she sells it and if she dies, her estate will almost certainly pay some inheritance tax too. If at some point she decides to let it, she'll pay tax on the income. Just like anyone else unless.

Would you rather I had not been honest and pretended I didn’t have a second home? I have never used my second house as a holiday home. I have, for a couple of years, rented it out for holiday lets. That was because of covid when landlords were told we could not get rid of bad tenants.

I repeat what I said earlier, I am not the Housing Minister.

A few thoughts:
If I wanted a second home I would want one I could use for many years. Maybe even one to retire to?

We all know there's no security as a politician. And anyway, I wouldn't buy a second home too near my job (unless it was an area I truly loved) given that most jobs are not for life anymore.

Lots of people like a home by the sea. I think it's somewhere she can work from and holiday at.

30 mins to just about an hour is exactly the right distance between home and work I found. I always had quite stressful jobs and that gave me time to think, decompress, and reset.
I once worked only 10 mins from home by car and found it nicer to walk if I could as that took long enough to have blown a lot of rubbish away.

The question is not how many houses any Labour MP occupies. It is the simple fact that Labour has done a lot of virtue signalling and stomping around and shouting about the iniquities of second homes especially in holiday areas How all these second home owners are distorting the local housing market, making it more difficult for first time buyers by driving.

Now we see a prominent government minister buying a holiday home in a seaside constituency. She also has a house in her constituency and a grace & favour flat in London. A distribution of home/work houses that applies to many families not just politicians.

It is the second home by the seaside that sticks in my craw.
