Thanks for posting this Karmalady.

I must admit I didn’t know much about the Fabian Society, although I had heard of them. Anyway, this video peaked my interest so I googled them.

Here’s what they stand for.

The Fabian Society is a socialist organisation which aims to promote:

greater equality of power, wealth and opportunity

the value of collective action and public service

an accountable, tolerant and active democracy

citizenship, liberty and human rights

sustainable development

multilateral international cooperation.

Sounds great to me … so once again OP, thank you👍

The PM and half of his cabinet are members, along with a fair few other Labour MPs

Is there any reason they shouldn't be? They're hardly extremists. They were one of the major influences on the early 20th century Labour Party.

growstuff of course there isn’t a problem, my post was for information, not a judgement 🤷‍♀️

I believe that Lord Justice Bean, one of the judges in the Epping hotel appeal, is also a member

I don’t think it’s a sect Karmalady!

Isn’t it the socialist equivalent of Onward, the right wing think tank, which the last Tory government relied on?

RosieandherMaw Thu 04-Sept-25 18:13:52

Is sect an appropriate word?
The Fabian Society has an honourable history and reputation for what Lizziedrip quotes

“The Fabian Society is a socialist organisation which aims to promote:
greater equality of power, wealth and opportunity
the value of collective action and public service
an accountable, tolerant and active democracy
citizenship, liberty and human rights
sustainable development
multilateral international cooperation.”
Nothing to argue with in all of that, IMO.
Hardly a sect with all the pejorative connotations of that description.

I was going to say that they've been around for well over 100 years.
Nothing new, nothing to see here.

Oh, just looked it up, 141 years!

Wyllow3 Fri 05-Sept-25 00:04:18

Sect?

Bizarre. 🤨

From 1884, when they were set up, they were a major influence in women getting the vote, as male snd female leaders and members were definitely "Equal" from Day 1.

growstuff Fri 05-Sept-25 01:01:31

Alex Phillips is Richard Tice's policy adviser, so it's not surprising she doesn't like the Fabian Society.

Wyllow3 Fri 05-Sept-25 01:07:11

Ex GB news ....unbiased? Ludicrous.

Anyone interested in British cultural history during the 20th century will have been aware of this group of intelligentsia. They served as a balance to the tendency towards fascism - particularly certain figures in the aristocracy, media and others during the 30s.

Well if your life’s so busy why bother to spend the time to make a silly negative remark Foxie

I know nothing about them at all but their views sound interesting to me
