Another disappointment for Starmer just announced.

The Bayeux Tapestry won't be coming across this week due to big protests in France.
😢

I'd hide it away somewhere safe in a French château until the strikes are over (if ever), and the Bayeux building is finished!

As long as you remember where you stashed it😁 I often put stuff in a safe place never to be seen again.

I think it’s the correct decision, the tapestry is extremely fragile.

I am disappointed as I would have gone to see it here, will have to wait till it’s back on display in France now.

I'm guessing it will find a way to make a quick dash in between the weekly strikes!

😁

I've forgotten where I put mine 😲
It must be at least 30 years old, bought in the actual Bayeux Museum.

Perhaps I should offer it to the BM?
It's only about 10 feet long, though.

Sir Kier Starmer has more on his mind than to be troubled by a Tapestry.

Grantanow Thu 18-Sept-25 14:52:15

Trivial diversion.

😆
To quote Starmer, Everybody is walking around here with a smile on their face at the thought of the tapestry coming. (During Macron's recent state visit).
Now everybody is walking around here looking glum.

It's very serious, you know! It wouldn't take much today for the lorry carrying the tapestry to be blocked, upturned and raided, or soaked through with the water cannons out in force!
There's already been protests about the tapestry coming to the UK at all. 😆

Allira Thu 18-Sept-25 15:06:11

I've decided to keep mine and put it up in our newly decorated hall.
Anyone welcome to come and view, £10 pp, tea and 🎂 included, all proceeds to charity.

Don't all rush at once, Sir Keir and Lady Starmer are first on the list.

Are you doing a reenactment then?

Lahlah65 Thu 18-Sept-25 16:08:13

I’m going to start a campaign for its repatriation since it was made here! If the Elgin Marbles can go back to Greece, we should have our tapestry back. As compensation for the invasion in 1066 😂

May I suggest going to see the Overlord Embroidery at the D-Day museum in Sòuthsea, Portsmouth?
This is was made as an echo of the Bayeux Tapestry and tells the story of the D-Day landings in 34 hand-stitched panels. I find it very moving, both because of the story itself and also because of the skill and artistry in its creation.
Oh, and you could also take the ferry from Portsmouth to Caen, only a few miles from Bayeux, to see that tapestry (actually an embroidery too).

Sueinkent Thu 18-Sept-25 16:58:55

It was made in Kent. It should be returned permanently.

I was just going to post exactly the same thing. It is a wonderful piece of work.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 18-Sept-25 17:14:04

Romola the reason the Bayeux Tapestry was coming to the UK is that it’s home in France is going to be closed for at least a year for renovations.

I hate to admit it but viewing the Bayeux tapestry was one of the most boring things I have ever done.
I love a museum and am more than moderately interested I history but it was not exciting.
I think I was in there about 10 minutes, my husband was in for an age.
I must be very shallow😉.

WithNobsOnIt Thu 18-Sept-25 17:51:48

Can't they get a couple of the next arrival of boat people to bring it over in a thick ,water proof plastic bag?

Problem solved.

All arrows are the safety kind with suction cups instead of a point.

Mind you, if one hits you in the eye you might yelp!

You're not coming round chez nous, then!

Oreo Thu 18-Sept-25 18:09:35

Well I am, but tbf only for the cake and a go with a crossbow.

Oreo Thu 18-Sept-25 18:11:18

It has to be a crossbow as I couldn’t manage a longbow they’re enormous!

Oreo Thu 18-Sept-25 18:12:18

Can you make it half price as I think a tenner is exorbitant?

Watch out for next door's cat!

Yes, a fiver would be ok but no cake.

I could offer my services to transport it. Plenty of boats to chose from my balcony here. 🇫🇷
Beautiful day coming to a close.
