Barack and Michelle Obama at Aretha Franklin's awesome tribute to Carole King.

It will take some time but as we now know that America is no longer the friend and ally of Britain and Europe we will be pivoting away from the USA.

I don’t think that will be the case, the US is a powerful ally.
There will be elections and another President elected.

Unless the rules get changed to some sort of Putinesque thing!
Don’t laugh- could happen !!

foxie48 Fri 26-Sept-25 08:11:48

Obama does well in polls, always in the top quartile and sometimes in the top ten, Trump is always near the bottom.

Late to the thead but I've just watched the clip. Great way to start my day, thank you. If you watched the in depth series about Obama that was on a while ago, it was a masterclass of negotiation in a very flawed political system. A president who tried his hardest to get important changes in healthcare etc in by negotiation and concensus. He is an intellectual giant and although he failed in some areas, he makes Trump look like a spoilt petulant child. He'll be remembered as a great potus, whereas IMO Trump will be seen as the most damaging to America in modern time.

Spot on *Foxie and I'm glad you enjoyed the O/P.

Your comments, to me, come across as a wee bit "sour grapes". Oreo.

Why not just simply not applaud what was good, be fair in what was not good, and so on?

He was the first person of colour to be POTUS, for goodness sake, does this not count for anything? And the brushback of Trump.

I notice less and less people of colour at rallies Obama was a fine, cultured man with a superb partner in Michelle.

Yes flawed, but aren't we all?

How on earth do you interpret my comment/comments as ‘a wee bit sour grapes’ Wyllow3 confused I’m not a Trump fan or a fan of Obama really, either. It’s who is the best candidate and not colour for me.He’s mixed race so just as much white as black.
Am not an American national so don’t really care too much who’s President.
There’s never been a POTUS as strange as Donald Trump tho but he won’t be around forever.

I thought, reading the heading, that the OP would be written by our USA Grans, but I don't believe you are, Wyllow3, although I could be wrong. Please correct me if so.

No, as a British person, I have never loved and honoured the United States of America and find that quite a strange expression unless you are American.

Yes, we've had far better Presidents, including Obama and I do like Michelle Obama from what I know of her. Yes, we in the UK have always had an affinity with the USA, much of their history and culture is ours too. Yes, I am grateful that they decided to join us as an ally in WW2, albeit belatedly.
And I have enjoyed their popular music (particularly Carole King!).

However, they are in many ways quite different from the UK although I hope they remain our allies.

As for Trump?
This, too, shall pass.

*As for Trump?

Now that, I like the sound of.

I wasn't and clear enough, and apologise (my BiL has bladder cancer, and its a critical weekend), I intended to say, "love and honour the Obamas"

Glad to say, very very UK, Yorkshire Lass, and its *Wyllow .....I had to add the 3 as I messed up signing in).

Why did I say "Wee bit of sour grapes" I guess this weekend I'm thinking, for heaven's sake, can we have a bit of "glass half full" for a change? The patient is, despite needing dialysis.

Lost in translation!

I can usually find a glass that is half full but sometimes it's not so easy.
I'm sorry to hear about your BIL.

Wyllow3 Sat 27-Sept-25 21:58:20

Oh Allira yes. it is hard. I'm realistic, and you know I believe of my nearly 2 year deep depression following the appalling year ending of my marriage to a co-ervice and verbally very violent man.

Yet....*life is very , ever, persistent* until no hope is left, and even then, there is the possibility of sharing loss and giving and taking comfort from others.

So even when my glass has been very half empty, there has always been a trickle of hope, as if you let it, love has a way of coming in if one opens ones eyes.

And thank you: BiL is surrounded by love, he looked after his grandchildren when they were little alone a lot of the time, and lives with one of the families - but thats because what he has given?

I find cynicism destructive

Allira Sat 27-Sept-25 22:06:31

I'm sorry to hear about that Wyllow3. It must be difficult.

We can empathise even if we don't all post on here about our problems. Yes, your BIL is surrounded by love.

If I know a poster whom I disagree with has big difficulties at home of sad kinds it does change my response somewhat, it's the right way to be imo? I sort of think that the "personal is political" as human beans.

That clip really brightened up my Sunday morning.
I love Carole King and Aretha Franklin!
I saw the musical Beautiful about Carole King's life and it was brilliant.

Of course, it's up to them. but if we all revealed a little more at times, we might understand each other as people not just 'opinions".

For example, I have seen for myself people I disagree with very deeply politically post very kindly on other forums and it alters my perception

(To a point - it depends what they are saying politically, if its expressing close to disgust or putting others down or constant cynicism then, well -..)

Actually, it's a very clever thought!

I was never a fan of the Obamas. Too much razzmatazz, but the Americans seem to like that. Personally, I don't think a President's wife should be so forward. Trumps's wife has the balance right. She is seen at his side, supporting him, but doesn't steal the limelight.

I adore her, and like many here bought the Tapestry LP immediately.

"AI Overview
Carole King's Tapestry LP was released on February 10, 1971, by Ode Records. It was recorded in January 1971 at A&M studio in Los Angeles and is considered one of the greatest and best-selling albums of all time.

Now that dates us over 70's ☺️

I've got "I'll be your friend" as one of two in my will as maybe played at a funeral , and the other one is from Alison Moyet, whom I like)d) immensely: this was recorded later in her career

Dido's Lament

This is my answer to what I consider an astonishing statement in 2025 as opposed to maybe 1950?

foxie48 Mon 29-Sept-25 07:30:22

IMO Michelle Obama became a figure in that Presidency because she was such an impressive communicator and the American people liked her. Plenty of presidential wives have had identities in their own right and why on earth shouldn't they?

I always think that Michelle Obama would make an excellent President.
