I am thinking thank goodness we didn't join the EU

I agree wholeheartedly.

I'm thinking that if we hadn't so stupidly left the EU those tariffs wouldn't apply to us.

Yes, but we did and therefore we have to deal with the situation. What would you do now we're here?

Personally I hate the thought of tit for tat tariffs because they only really hit the consumer. I'd far prefer a negotiated tariff if it has to happen. The way we deal with this will have an effect on a lot of other stuff away from trade, like security, peace-keeping in Ukraine, etc. We need to work with the EU at some level even if we are not part of their club.

Trump's bully boy tactics are horrible and I'd hate to see us emulate him.

‘British sources said that the UK imported 3.7 million tonnes of steel from the EU and that this could be subject to retaliatory tariffs. “The UK government will need to stand up for our industry,” one said. The UK exported 1.9 million tonnes of steel to the EU in 2024.

Surely if there is no exemption, we will just retaliate, we’d be better off?

True, if we hadn’t left, we wouldn’t be faced with these tariffs, but we have and we are.
It will be interesting to see Starmer’s response.
Submissive or forceful? What do you think?

Today I read that the EU is threatening 50% tariffs on British steel. Instead of reading the UK is threatening 50% tariffs on German cars or French food ( that would concentrate their thinking) we will no doubt have Starmer with his appeasement face and his begging bowl. Much as I dislike most of what Trump does at least he always puts the United States first.
Isn't it long overdue for someone, anyone to put the United Kingdom first?
