Breaking news, midnight - Peace in the Middle East?

US President Donald Trump has announced that "Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan"

"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line", Trump says on Truth Social

Trump is "considering travelling to the Middle East" in the coming days, according to the White House

Mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar in Sharm El-Sheikh have been attempting to broker an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas
The negotiations come two years and two days after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the 7 October 2023 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages

At least 67,183 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says

Well, we'll have to see - but I so hope that tomorrow will bring clarity that indeed matters will move forward now to peace, and that its not a Trump claim that cannot be backed up

Ordinary folk in Finland, I think, are getting basic survival readiness raining, against a Russian incursion. All ages.

ronib Sat 11-Oct-25 16:34:46

Seems quite likely that Palestinians will continue to be bombed to smithereens once the hostages have all been released. I hope Trump has a Plan B as I don’t think it’s going that well just now. Israel can’t tolerate a rearmed Hamas in Gaza. It won’t happen.

Wyllow3 Sat 11-Oct-25 16:36:25

Following the logic of what I said about not stopping demonstrating yet - and getting cross the demonstrations are still happening -

think on this -

Should, for example, all those in Israel who have been demonstrating about the hostages, go home and keep quiet just becuase the very first stages of a process have started?

Of course they should not stop - they are still waiting, and have been disappointed before !

ronib Sat 11-Oct-25 16:37:45

I’d wait until Tuesday myself before kicking up a fuss.

A very valid point - just think, Trump hadn't actually planned "who is going to manage the situation in Gaza - (and he wanted the peace prize overnight 🤨)

Feelings run high over Gaza but I can't blame all Israeli people for the actions of their government. Not all of them support Netanyahu.

Thank goodness there are some normal ones amongst them - and I would always check people out individually to see if they were "normal or not".

I think there is some confusion too as to whether fighting is something that is just done on a physical basis - pick up a gun and aim it.

Some of us know that people who have fought with us in the past - at an individual level - probably still havent forgotten the fact yet to this day. When you know you've been described at national level as "THAT woman!!!! EEEk - THAT woman!!!" then they know full well you've fought - and defeated them.

I could see myself as a saboteur if need be. I also could see that put in a room with a bad troublemaker and I was holding a gun = perfectly capable of using it and then not missing a blink of sleep that night for the fact the other person wouldnt be alive any longer to walk out of that room. So - a member of the "Resistance" on the other hand....hmmm...

Sabotage - oh yep.....

Fortunately Father Time deals with all bad people eventually at some point or other - given that lives here are pretty short and so a "nuisance" won't be around forever. Really must go and check re a certain 80-something year old troublemaker....if he's still around...

Galaxy Sat 11-Oct-25 16:38:59

It is always fascinating that in our imaginations we would all be part of the brave resistance in the event of war, of course that is very unlikely to be true.

CariadAgain Sat 11-Oct-25 16:42:13

Quick check - Klaus Schwab was born March 1938 - not much longer then.....

Lots of people probably wouldnt be in the Resistance - but others of us - hmmm.....

If they have the means most women would fight any occupation, give them guns and ammunition. The UK has never been occupied so it’s never been tested.

I think the premise was Gransnetters, not all women, who, by definition, would probably be older.

Galaxy Sat 11-Oct-25 16:57:34

Yes that is what everyone thinks Cariad, it is interesting.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Oct-25 17:01:15

Not at this age. But as a young idealistic woman - yes I could see me being in the resistance.

Wyllow3 Sat 11-Oct-25 17:02:45

We can't really know, until we are faced with it, in my opinion. But I agree with David.

We are just as capable, unless it involves strength, of defending a family with any means possible.

Some would say more: I think the urge to protect others may differ in nature between men and women, but women are certainly no less passionate about it.

Charming.

You forget some Gransnetters may be that age or have OH who are.

Yes but one has to be realistic😀😀.

At this age it is a bonus just waking up in the morning😀😀

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Oct-25 17:06:00

I would certainly wield a gun even now if someone was threatening my family. Wouldn’t be much good, but I wouldn’t sit passively

Me too. I would think most grans would fight to protect their family.

LOL.

Admits this is one aspect of many peoples thinking that is (very) different from my own. I never have been able to understand people wanting a long life - because I've got it firmly fixed in my mind = 82 years 10 months for a British woman on average. I was talking to my best friend on the phone yesterday (as she lives back in England) and the subject of lifespan came up and I remembered she's actually just months away from that age - and I certainly don't want to lose her just yet obviously. She knows me well enough not to take it at all personally - that I'm just going to "have a fit" if I wake up one day and think "Darn -it's my 83rd birthday - and I'm still here on Earth. What went wrong? I'm going to complain to the Maker about still being here". That's me - and everyone who knows me is clear I'd hate/hate/hate a long life personally...but if someone else wants that = that's up to them

With my belief system - no particular model of - but it firmly includes "Of course there's a Heaven/Summerlands after death - and I am going to be SO glad to be rid of Earthly problems" and I've already got tentative plans in place as to what I'll do - after the initial Welcome Home celebration is over. It would suit my temperament to be one of those guides that welcomes people and shows them around/tells them whats what..."There's the Hall of Records over there.....concerts are held over there" etc etc.

If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.

For once I agree with you Oreo. What on earth (or maybe not on earth) is this thread all about?

RosieandherMaw Sat 11-Oct-25 19:38:43

Err....they could have refused. Some have refused and they do get punished by the "Israeli" "government" for refusing - but it is possible. Thinks - PTSD for going against one's conscience and the risk of possible injury/death for doing what the "Israeli" dictators want or jail sentences at intervals = by far the lesser of two evils to do a jail sentence (even though the flotilla members have been telling us about the torture the "Israelis" put them through whilst in there )
Could @ CariadAgain please explain her use of “. “ around any reference to Israel?
Whatever your political stance, Israel exists as a country, as a member of the UN has been a legitimate and recognised regime since 1948
The Israeli Declaration of Independence, formally the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel[2] (Hebrew: הכרזה על הקמת מדינת ישראל), was proclaimed on 14 May 1948
So unless you also refer to the “USA” “.UK “ “France,” “Germany” you might do well to brush up on countries and their nomenclature.

AGAA4 Sat 11-Oct-25 19:40:58

In Tel Aviv Witkoff gave his speech telling Israelis their families would be home soon. Their were enormous cheers and cries of love for Trump. When Netanyahu was mentioned the cheers turned to loud boos.

AGAA4 Sat 11-Oct-25 19:43:27

There not their
