Breaking news, midnight - Peace in the Middle East?

US President Donald Trump has announced that "Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan"

"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line", Trump says on Truth Social

Trump is "considering travelling to the Middle East" in the coming days, according to the White House

Mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar in Sharm El-Sheikh have been attempting to broker an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas
The negotiations come two years and two days after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the 7 October 2023 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages

At least 67,183 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says

Well, we'll have to see - but I so hope that tomorrow will bring clarity that indeed matters will move forward now to peace, and that its not a Trump claim that cannot be backed up

CariadAgain Thu 09-Oct-25 09:45:25

We'll be very very lucky indeed if there's even an improvement in the situation. Bridges need to be built - if that's possible - and I'm not optimistic about it.

Step 1 - There are 69 members of the latest relief flotilla to Gaza being held as at early this morning. Immediate release of them obviously - a few of whom are British citizens at that.

Step 2 - Stop the settlers violence and land-stealing.

That's before we get down to the nitty-gritty of just how much recompense the "Israelis" are prepared to make.

Trump the narcissist rescuer.

Very much hope, by whatever means, the lives of ordinary people improve.

CariadAgain Thu 09-Oct-25 09:51:13

Just had a quick flip back and found that it's 38,000 by "Israeli" settlers in the West Bank since October 2023. That's a LOT of attacking that has to stop.....

There are even videos out there of little kids (primary school age!!!!) being aggressive towards Palestinians and trying to shove them off their land - it starts young in some of them...

CariadAgain Thu 09-Oct-25 09:51:43

38,000 attacks - missed the attacked word.

ronib Thu 09-Oct-25 09:57:20

Do you think your figures are accurate? Who drew them up? CariadAgain
More importantly how to move forward from this? How to stop the hate?

Grantanow Thu 09-Oct-25 10:11:19

Looks ike Mr Trump has succeeded where many have failed. Of course he doesn't understand much of the detail: Presidents and Prime Ministers have people to do that for them.

TheatreLover Thu 09-Oct-25 10:12:55

I appreciate that this is a thread about Gaza, but can there be peace when the Israeli settlers are taking more and more land from Palestinians in the West Bank? This theft of land seems to be with the approval of some members of the Israeli Government.

ronib Thu 09-Oct-25 10:13:36

Trump put forward a 20 point peace plan. How much detail do you want?

TheatreLover Thu 09-Oct-25 10:16:09

I apologise, as I can see another poster has raised concerns about the Settlers' activity in the West Bank.

Jane112 Thu 09-Oct-25 10:18:29

Trump is absolutely a warmonger, he actually changed the name of the Department of Defence to the Department of War and is using ICE agents to conduct raids on innocent people including tiny children who have been zip tied, their crime is to live in cities that didn't vote for Trump. I hope and pray there will be peace in Gaza but neither Trump or Netanyahu are to be trusted, one has carried out a genocide and the the other has hugged him and funded him whilst he did it. Both Trump and Netanyahu want a land grab for their own ends and I really fear for the people of Gaza that once the hostages are returned Netanyahu will find an excuse to resume the slaughter.

I think that the Nobel Peace Prize winner will be announced tomorrow.
Just hope he doesn't go off in a strop if it isn't him.

Maremia Thu 09-Oct-25 10:25:14

The 'devil' is in the detail. An old saying but true.

Maremia Thu 09-Oct-25 10:26:22

Hate has to stop from all sides who hate, for peace to have a chance.

Maremia Thu 09-Oct-25 10:28:00

Jane, just hope, hope, hope you are wrong, but we have all seen in newscasts what you describe.

CariadAgain in your frequent rants against Israel you refer to the people there as “Israelis” and unless you come up with a logical explanation of why you don’t simply write Israelis pure and simple I must assume it’s an insult and antisemitic as you don’t believe there should be a State of Israel.
I cannot think of any other explanation but am willing to listen.

ronib Thu 09-Oct-25 10:57:07

Don’t worry yourself Oreo …. That’s just one poster.

AGAA4 Thu 09-Oct-25 11:02:35

First things first. Let's get those hostages home and aid into Gaza.

There are still sticking points in the plan. Hamas have not agreed to surrender arms or leave Gaza yet.

Babs03 Thu 09-Oct-25 11:12:04

Just came on to say my heart and soul hopes there is peace at last 🙏🏾🙏🏾
And though WWM2 cannot say this as well, am sure she feels the same, and I certainly miss her contributions.

Mt61 Thu 09-Oct-25 11:35:20

I agree Sarnia. He’s not all bad.

Nominations for the Nobel Pease Prize closed last January so there’s no chance Trump will get it this year. Maybe next year Donald!☹️

Oreo, this isn't Pedants Corner. Cariad uses a different style to you. Let her be.

History lesson of when the name "Israel" started - just had a quick check with Chat GPT asking when that name came up first.

14 May 1948

The people who started the name off were the Jewish leadership.

But the Palestinians and much of the rest of the world still call Palestine "Palestine". My father referred to Palestine as "Palestine" when he told me as a teenager he'd been in the British Armed Forces fighting in Palestine - and how it had been. He did not call it "Israel" - because it isn't some strange new previously uninhabited country. It's an already established one - with people living in it. I gather some of the early settlers were legitimate - having all officially bought a bit of the land off the Palestinians and so they really do own that bit of land and it is legally theirs personally. But the rest.....hmmm...and a lot has been stolen by people being driven out of their houses and off their land.

It could have been some other country that got chosen for landgrabbing. According to Chat GPT - it could have been Uganda, parts of Argentina or Australia that got land-grabbed and given a secondary name by those that did so. But the preference of the most influential people back in the 1940s was to landgrab for Palestine. Quoted reason = "It's biblically ours" - would love to see the family trees they could use that went back 2,000 years and proved they personally were from there centuries back and had never intermarried with anyone else from another country ever. Even in a family as English as mine, for instance, just the last couple of centuries have seen a Scottish person, a Dutch person and an Irish person.

Things change even over the decades - never mind the centuries.

I don't see any difference between someone trying to misname a person (eg trying to misname me) and me having to say "No - my name is still the same - I have not changed it. It is still CariadAgain. I'm still the same person and my house is still my house and my stolen bit of garden is still part of my garden really".

ronib Thu 09-Oct-25 12:01:30

History lesson continues.
The State of Israel’s creation is distinct from the ancient presence of a people called Israel in the region, which is first attested around 1140 BC.

CariadAgain Thu 09-Oct-25 12:28:55

Maybe we could cut straight to the chase - ie ask everyone that self-identifies as "Israeli" that lives in Palestine to produce legal evidence that they bought the house or land they describe as "theirs", when, who from, how much they paid for it. Followed by wanting the evidence of legitimate purchase in turn from the person that they say sold them the land/house previously and so on - proof of legitimate legal purchase of the house or land going back to the early 1940's.

May not be that easy for some legal/official purchasers to do that - but I know if I were a proper legal owner of land then I'd have kept my proof that I was in such a volatile situation.

That would be no different to the fact that when I moved into my current house I found an enormous pile of legal paperwork tracing back to the year the house was built and I could see clearly who the previous owners were and all sorts of other facts - like my house had had a name previous to the one I had bought it under and I duly added the proof my house has a new name again since I bought it and changed its name again. Proof that our unadopted road does have a legal name - which I now duly give out every time I write my address down. All sorts of proof for all sorts of things - some of which I didn't know.

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "Papers please" to make that request to someone that says they own a house or bit of land to request them to prove it is proper legitimate ownership. Now that should prove interesting....
