Breaking news, midnight - Peace in the Middle East?

(1001 Posts)

US President Donald Trump has announced that "Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan"

"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line", Trump says on Truth Social

Trump is "considering travelling to the Middle East" in the coming days, according to the White House

Mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar in Sharm El-Sheikh have been attempting to broker an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas
The negotiations come two years and two days after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the 7 October 2023 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages

At least 67,183 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says

Well, we'll have to see - but I so hope that tomorrow will bring clarity that indeed matters will move forward now to peace, and that its not a Trump claim that cannot be backed up

Looking at happy, happy people all over the world rejoicing about what Donald Trump has achieved. 👏

Can you imagine their joy when their family members who have been held hostage finally come home.

I knew that I was right CariadAgain and that you can’t even bring yourself to say the country is called Israel and the citizens are called Israelis.
Tells me all I need to know.
Nobody has called it Palestine on this forum other than you.

Kier Starmer summed it up for me - “profound relief”. We are breathing a little easier here, but aware that there is a long, long way to go.

As an aside: is WWM2 ok? Best wishes to her if anyone’s in touch.

Perhaps no-one else is strong enough to stand up to you...

Starmer is out of his league…. I guess he understands that the State of Palestine has been kicked into the long grass?

What on earth are you talking about CariadAgain?

There's plenty who stand up to others, particularly when they see others are posting inlammatory and bigoted posts.

But to suggest that posters don't refer to ISRAEL and wrongly refer to it as Palestine is because they're scared of Oreo is severely pushing your misguided rhetoric and is laughable and ridiculous.

Antisemitism hasn’t gone away, I doubt if it ever will

How right you are GG.

And many of those hiding in plain sight think their guarded comments are clever and that they go unnoticed. hmm

Maremia Thu 09-Oct-25 13:54:58

What is it you need to know? That not everyone on a forum agrees with you? This is an open forum. It's interesting to read other POVs. It is the GN way to accept that with respect.
And there is that conflation creeping in again.

Maremia Thu 09-Oct-25 13:57:04

Yes, missing Whitewave's researched posts. If you are in touch please say 'Hi'.

CariadAgain

38,000 attacks - missed the attacked word.

Surely to goodness we have to have hope. There doesn't seem to be any point in dredging up statistics on how awful this war has been. It won't be plain sailing but it's a beginning.

Am afraid she can’t, and for that reason am still off GN most of the time. And tbh threads like this consistently get derailed by those simply wanting to push their own agenda, with a merry bunch of fellow saboteurs. So, will only pop up occasionally in order to say that the person or people responsible for seeing off long term posters know who they are and what they have done.
Anyway that’s all for now.
And am respecting what you say Maremia.
Keep on keeping on.

Yay! Trump is that little bit nearer to landing that Nobel Peace Prize.

What a joke that would be.......

If he can pull this off, why would it be a joke? It would be something that Biden never managed to do

Give credit where credit is due

You may not like the man but give him some credit for this

Or Obama and he got the Peace Prize. For what?

I have missed what happened with Whitewavemark2

We do not always agree politically, but I respect her as a poster and will miss her contributions to threads.

Excuse me. That's a very derogatory post, akin to the silly clique comments we've had before. I'm no saboteur, I have a mind of my own, and post my own thoughts here. I'm not responsible for seeing Whitewavemark2 off, so to whom are you referring? I've been abroad for 6 weeks, but still dip in and out, I have no idea why WWM2 has been banned, if she has been, but GNHQ must have checked whichever thread it was and acted on that.
FWIW I had a certain amount of respect for her persistency.

Boz Thu 09-Oct-25 15:04:08

Why is it that people on the losing side of an argument start shouting sabotage?
Also, threats to go amuse me. If you are going, go.

windmill1 Thu 09-Oct-25 15:06:40

Now time for Trump to do the correct thing and deliver Netanyahoo to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

MayBee70 Thu 09-Oct-25 15:07:11

Persistency? How about well balanced researched posts (and persistency is a pretty derogatory description of them imo). She’s a great loss to the forum.

AGAA4 Thu 09-Oct-25 15:11:52

This thread is getting out of hand. There is no 'losing side' just people's opinions.
This started as hope for a better future for Israel and Gaza and an ending of hostilities to be replaced with hostilities between Gransnetters.

Well you could say Trump shows persistency, tenacity, perseverance as well! All extremely important qualities I think. Not derogatory at all.

I agree. WW2 will be missed. She has been an asset giving well researched information.

I agree. There was no need for the post which added nothing to the momentous happenings.
(And probably no need to react, but needed saying).

ferry23 Thu 09-Oct-25 15:38:29

Well, to bring the thread full circle, I for one eagerly and optimistically await the outcome of the voting - we should know very soon - and I wish nothing more than a peace settlement that stops any more hurt for any more people - whatever their faith, their race, their colour.

Too much pain and suffering, too many deaths. Let it end and let people rebuild their lives as well as they can.
