Breaking news, midnight - Peace in the Middle East?

US President Donald Trump has announced that "Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan"

"This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line", Trump says on Truth Social

Trump is "considering travelling to the Middle East" in the coming days, according to the White House

Mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar in Sharm El-Sheikh have been attempting to broker an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas
The negotiations come two years and two days after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the 7 October 2023 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages

At least 67,183 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says

Well, we'll have to see - but I so hope that tomorrow will bring clarity that indeed matters will move forward now to peace, and that its not a Trump claim that cannot be backed up

Stuff on Hamas written by Dale Pankhurst Queens Belfast

“what lies ahead for Hamas? A clause in the wider peace plan calls for the full dissolution of the group, both as a militant organisation and as a civil administration. It is difficult to see how Hamas leadership will negotiate their way through this without some form of disarmament or demobilisation.

The Israeli government, with backing from the US and other western countries such as the UK, has repeatedly said the full demobilisation of Hamas and its militant wing is the only possible outcome it will accept. This leads to a significant dilemma for Hamas.

Its entire reason for existence is to seek the destruction of the Israeli state through violence. There is no room for peaceful, democratic means in its objectives. So if the Hamas leadership are to pursue some form of demobilisation, they risk fracturing the organisation into dissenting armed factions that continue their militancy against Israel.

Why is anyone worried about fracturing the organization of “Hamas” ? What is the problem with this?

Maremia Sat 11-Oct-25 13:38:32

It's just where those 'fractures' may end up ronib.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Oct-25 13:40:40

The fractures will be armed militants. So dangerous.

ronib Sat 11-Oct-25 13:41:05

Israel will blow the fractures out of the water? I don’t know?

ronib Sat 11-Oct-25 13:42:02

Well “Hamas” hasn’t exactly not been very dangerous. So what is the difference?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Oct-25 13:42:35

This -

“Hamas has remained remarkably resilient throughout the two years of war in Gaza. US figures from early 2025 showed that Hamas had added up to 15,000 new volunteers since the October 7 attacks in 2023, largely replacing those it had lost since the start of the conflict. Many of these recruits may be reluctant to surrender their weapons after losing family and property during the war”

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Oct-25 13:45:53

Dangerous to the peace process.

That is what all eyes should now be on and stamp out any possible danger.

It will be for the new temporary government to deal with this - certainly not imo Israel, as that would be like oil on the fire.

So many lives have been lost while Netanyahu pursues his aim of killing all Hamas. Hamas are severely weakened and have their backs to the wall now but after the way the Palestinians have been treated there will be a great deal of hate for Israel and other groups will form in the future with the same intent.
I would like to think there will be peace forever as Trump says but I doubt Israel will be forgiven by those children in Gaza who have lost parents, sibling and friends in this war.

ronib Sat 11-Oct-25 13:54:57

Israelis also have died.

It would be astounding if there was no hatred of the Israelis by the Palestinians, and vice versa.

Going forward the whole situation will have to be managed with real skill.

Goodness knows who can do that?

I wonder if the Middle Eastern states are best placed to do so?

Maremia Sat 11-Oct-25 14:00:59

Thought the wishes were for Peace? Hopefully for everyone.

Maremia Sat 11-Oct-25 14:01:56

Those States seem to be playing more of a role.

Israelis also have died.

Israeli soldiers were included in "So many". I do feel for those young Israelis who have been conscripted to fight.

Wyllow3 Sat 11-Oct-25 14:22:46

Earlier today the truce was broken when IDF opened fire on civilians in Jabalia Refugee camp, Northern Gaza, earlier today.

Peace is precious and we cant take it for granted, but on the whole matters are moving forward. I agree with WWM that Middle Eastern States are best placed as peacekeepers.

My hairdresser is Muslim and yesterday she told me that their community have been concerned and angry that Saudi, Qatar, Omen, and other states with power as regards Trump, did not act sooner.

I'm inclined to agree, but they are are course also critical that those states treat their own citizens badly, money and power being concentrated in a rich families who rule, whilst great poverty reigns. They feel this is is not the Muslim way.

Not to mention how many maimed and broken adults and children that just about managed to survive…sad.

Hamas has recalled 7000 fighters to try to regain control now the IDF has pulled back. There are fears of renewed internal violence as there is no government in Gaza as yet.

ronib Sat 11-Oct-25 14:33:45

Trump has 200 American soldiers in peace keeping roles… he must up the numbers if 7k is real. How do you know this AGAA4?

ronib Sat 11-Oct-25 14:37:17

BBC is reporting 7k Hamas fighters are being recalled. No way will Israel accept this. So now what?

Maremia Sat 11-Oct-25 14:39:34

Don't think Trump is keen to deploy troops overseas. Prefers to send them into USA cities.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Oct-25 14:42:41

I think Italy said that they would send troops. Someone needs to get the act together pdq.

ronib Sat 11-Oct-25 14:42:56

The American army is around 452k active service…. Am sure Trump can find 7k?

This is what hamas say, they must be feeling desperate and fear the armed clans.

AGAA4 Sat 11-Oct-25 14:46:55

I'm wondering why this hasn't been thought of that after the IDF pull back there could be internal fighting.
Leaving Hamas to deal with it is a not a great move.

Oreo Sat 11-Oct-25 15:00:40

Hamas went to a family clan enclave last week and killed five of them, the clan killed nine hamas.
