Maccabi Tel Aviv football club banned

Aston Villa have banned the fans from Tel Aviv from attending the game. They say that after the violence in Amsterdam when the Jewish club was there that they don't feel they can provide the level of security needed to keep fans and nearby residents safe.
There have been clashes in Norway and Italy when Israel compete.
Aston Villa say it is not antisemitism but just being safety conscious.
Maybe another way could have been found without the ban?

Now the troops are out of Gaza why not fly some over to keep the Israeli supporters under control!!

I think it's unfair to equate football with aggression and violence when it has been trying so hard with its No Room For Racism Action Plan, updated only a couple of months ago.
All clubs profess to tackle racism in football and in our wider society, so why don't Aston Villa want to demonstrate this against these particular opponents and fans should trouble arise? You can't pick and choose.

Just the two of them go Maremia. They are on their 30s. Its the hordes that will probably descend from all over the UK that worry me.

Quite honestly I can't understand why any fans from Israel would want to come here, bearing in mind the antisemitism that is now unfortunately so rife in this country these days. Their team will undoubtedly be subjected to vile shrieks and boos, which will be bad enough, but to pay good money to deliberately come here, knowing what awaits you seems pretty foolish. Mind you neither DH or I am evenly remotely interested in football, so maybe that colours my opinion. That aside, I find myself hoping that Tel Aviv win!

I don't think they are being banned because they are Israeli. They are being band for fear of violence.

Both are intertwined.
If they weren’t from Israel then they wouldn’t be banned for coming over here.
People in Birmingham and it’s environs who are so anti Israel that they intend to cause trouble plus anyone from anywhere else in the UK eager for violence should be corralled/ kettled by police. There should have been plans put in place already but there’s still time.

I still say ban the troublemakerls

Troublemakers of all kinds should be banned from sporting events, protest marches, anywhere they are a potential danger to others.

However, that does not mean that all the rival team's supporters are "thugs", does it.

Of course, known troublemakers should not be allowed near the ground.
However, tarnishing them all with the same brush is very wrong.

Or are you saying they would be in danger from other elements, our own troublemakers here in the UK? If so, those troublemakers need to be dealt with so that everyone can go about their business peacefully on our streets.

Well said.

Aston Villa's decision is suspect and would seem to be racist.
Was it prompted by the local MP?
The MP for the area, Khan, is an ally of Muslim influencer Asrar Rashid who has urged followers to show 'no mercy' to Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters.

That is hate speech and the MP should not be condoning it.

Which troops?

Israeli troops?
Armed Israeli troops on the streets of Birmingham?

I assume that is a joke.

Oreo Fri 17-Oct-25 16:14:25

You can never tell on this forum Allira🤔

Oreo Fri 17-Oct-25 16:15:20

It’s hate speech alright, why isn’t he being talked to by police for incitement?

GrannyGravy13 Fri 17-Oct-25 16:15:26

I am suspicious.

Police can find manpower and resources to police 100 of 1,000s of pro Palestine supporters week after week, but cannot guarantee 1,000 (tickets available to Maccabi supporters apparently) Israeli football fans?

Allira Fri 17-Oct-25 16:19:45

Just 1,000?

Goodness, I thought we were expecting an influx of about 20,000!

There have been tens of thousands of people attending all the protests and they were policed somehow.

I don’t think it’s the 1000 Israeli supporters that they are worried about.

AGAA4 Fri 17-Oct-25 16:25:50

Has there been a lot of trouble with the Palestine supporters? It seems wherever Israel teams go trouble ensues. There has been problems in Amsterdam, Norway, Italy and Spain.
A cycling race had to be stopped due to protesters in Spain.
I don't like banning people but I hope if the ban is lifted nobody gets hurt. The residents around Aston Villa club want the ban to remain as they are afraid of the violence that could happen.
This is a very tricky situation.

Lathyrus3 Fri 17-Oct-25 16:26:37

Oh I can see how that might be misread.

I don’t think they are+worried about policing and preventing any trouble the Israeli supporters might attempt.

Probably you're right.

If so, as a nation we should be ashamed that supporters of a rival sporting team would not be safe in one of the major cities in our country.

AGAA4 Fri 17-Oct-25 16:30:31

People don't seem to understand that however many police are there if things turn violent people can be hurt. It worries me now that because of all the publicity people from all over the country could turn up to cause a riot.

MollyNew Fri 17-Oct-25 16:31:27

When Aston Villa were in the Champions League last season, one of their opponent's fans were banned from the match at Villa Park as they had caused trouble at another match in Europe. This ban received little to no publicity at the time.

However, we now have outrage about a team from Israel not being able to bring their supporters. Surely, each club's supporters should be evaluated on their previous behaviour at matches, wherever they come from?

GrannyGravy13 Fri 17-Oct-25 16:31:33

AGAA4 going by the threats online which are coming from Birmingham residents including an Imam, if I was Jewish it’s the last place I would go.

I only hope that the police and CPS are as vigilant in prosecuting them as we saw with those threats after Southport.

If not then the UK really is a two tier policing society.

Allira Fri 17-Oct-25 16:31:49

Time we brought back the water cannons or used tear gas as the French do.

Have you seen these please? I don't read that kind of thing .

British Muslims called the video "abhorrent," made clear that he "doesn't represent Islam's values," and accused Rashid of incitement

For what?

AGAA4 Fri 17-Oct-25 16:39:47

If any of my family were going to that match I would tell them to keep away. Unless the police can spirit the Tel Aviv supporters away quickly after the match and onto buses then I dread what will happen.
