Maccabi Tel Aviv football club banned

Aston Villa have banned the fans from Tel Aviv from attending the game. They say that after the violence in Amsterdam when the Jewish club was there that they don't feel they can provide the level of security needed to keep fans and nearby residents safe.
There have been clashes in Norway and Italy when Israel compete.
Aston Villa say it is not antisemitism but just being safety conscious.
Maybe another way could have been found without the ban?

AGAA4 going by the threats online which are coming from Birmingham residents including an Imam, if I was Jewish it’s the last place I would go.

I only hope that the police and CPS are as vigilant in prosecuting them as we saw with those threats after Southport.

If not then the UK really is a two tier policing society.

There is a Jewish Aston Villa Supporters association.

If any of my family were going to that match I would tell them to keep away. Unless the police can spirit the Tel Aviv supporters away quickly after the match and onto buses then I dread what will happen.

It might be an idea!

A source of shame, though.
That Jewish visitors to this country might need protection.

It is Allira. It makes me despair about some of the people in this country.

Good luck to your young nephews Kate, and to all others going to this match.
Hope it stays safe for the local residents as well.

That is what Rob Rinder was saying on breakfast news this morning.

It is a mark of shame that the U.K. cannot protect Jewish visitors here.

I didn't see that but I agree with him.

My father, who enjoyed football and who fought against Nazi Germany and also my father-in-law, who died doing that too, would be ashamed.

Yes, sorry, flippant off the cuff remark.
Hope everyone stays safe, good luck to those whose job it is to ensure this

Oh, thank goodness!

UK resident supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv should be able to attend the match if foreign ones are not to be allowed. I'm sure there must be lots of people happy to go along and support the team in solidarity with their Jewish friends and family. It's quite horrifying how many people have no problem with a blanket ban of supporters purely because they're Jewish.

They're not being banned because they're Jewish. I don't know how many times it's been stated on GN that being Israeli (or even a fan of an Israeli team) is not to be conflated with being Jewish. I don't see why Jewish people in the UK (or anywhere) should be fans of an Israeli football club.

growstuff fans support teams for various reasons.

Manchester United is the biggest supported team in Asia followed by Liverpool.

Why? I bet your father didn't fight for Israelis.

Israelis should not be conflated with Jews.

My father also fought against Nazi Germany. He was an RAF pilot and flew aid into Palestine after WW2, so was well aware of the fragile situation. While he was there in 1947, a cousin of his, who was in the military police, was murdered by Zionist terrorists.

Sorry, but WW2 has nothing to do with the reason that the decision was taken to ban the Maccabi fans.

I know. What's that got to do with anything?

Liverpool also has Norwegian fans.

People are conflating Israelis and Jews - that's the issue.

Why?
My DS supports a Spanish team but we're not Spanish. ⚽️

Maremia Fri 17-Oct-25 17:35:20

Conflation is just one of those things that crops up on so many threads.

So why are they being banned then?

Is it because their safety will not be guaranteed in Britain?
If so, as I and others have said, we should be ashamed.

Or is it because you believe every single Israeli football supporter is a trouble making thug?

Why is that exactly?

Maremia Fri 17-Oct-25 17:46:07

Why were the Police concerned?

Allira Fri 17-Oct-25 17:50:12

The decision is based on concerns from West Midlands Police about its ability to deal with potential protests relating the war between Israel and Gaza.

Ah thanks Allira. So the behaviour of the fans at previous overseas venues was a different issue.

Maremia Fri 17-Oct-25 17:54:56

In that case, AGAA4 's suggestion will work.
Bus them in safely.
Bus them out safely.
Planes straight home.
No bother.

eazybee Fri 17-Oct-25 18:13:12

The Government is working to reverse the decision to ban the supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv football club from attending the forthcoming match at Aston Villa. Apparently the West Midland Police have made the wrong decision.

Starmer's top team of Mahmood, Nandy and Reed have been drafted in to effect a solution.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 17-Oct-25 18:26:09

I do hope however, that if the Israeli supporters are allowed to attend that they dial down their rhetoric 😮😮. It was pretty shocking.

No no no, they are the good guys here. And we should all be ashamed of our country apparently.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 17-Oct-25 18:48:36

Well I hope the police are ready to defend the English fans.

Amsterdam council decreed them unwelcome after they armed themselves with steel bars and went on the rampage through Amsterdam.

Perhaps their behaviour is now all sweetness and light?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 17-Oct-25 19:01:40

Some team fans do have a poor reputation and Lazio, Red Star Belgrade and a couple of English team fans have a poor reputation for violence and hooliganism.

It really is up to the home football team to manage their fans imo.
