You couldn’t make this up!

Before it was even publicly announced a GB News viewer was suspicious of a man in a grey tracksuit carrying a large, clear plastic bag with his belongings. He was asking others for directions and she videoed him on her phone. He is still on the run but they know from her info that he caught a lunchtime train to London. Good for her!

Perhaps with the 200+ wrongful releases a year it’s time to put prisoners in orange jumpsuits so we can spot them in the street.

Only joking.

I feel very sorry for his victims today.

When numerous female prison wardens have been caught having ‘relations’ with male inmates, others caught assisting in drug smuggling within the prison, and now someone enables a criminal to escape deportation, you have to question the standards for hiring prison staff and their supervision.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 25-Oct-25 15:25:30

Ye gods.

Strap line just now from The Telegraph on my iPad “missing migrant tried to return to prison but guards shooed him away”.

StripeyGran Sat 25-Oct-25 15:25:41

How do we know a female helped a criminal to escape deportation please?

I think a lot of staff are "bought in".

Ilovecheese Sat 25-Oct-25 15:25:55

FGT It might help if their profession had higher status.

Delivery driver says he saw prison staff repeatedly turn Hadush Kebatu away and direct him to Chelmsford railway station.

There’s something very fishy about all of this.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 25-Oct-25 15:27:54

I didn’t say ‘a female’ StripeyGran.
I said ‘someone’ about this case.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 25-Oct-25 15:29:50

Yes I agree Ilovecheese. It’s a tough job.

I don’t think females should be employed in male prisons. On the whole. It seems a temptation. Some silly girls have always been attracted to the ‘bad boys’.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 25-Oct-25 15:30:56

Imagine failing at a manhunt for a guy who isn't even trying!

You have to question how much money has been put into the prison system for many years.

escaped Sat 25-Oct-25 15:50:27

I think I read somewhere (?) that the prison population has doubled in the last 25 years and is set to increase. I guess the problem is that if money has to be found to look after the criminals in terms of accommodation, food, etc, then cutbacks are likely to be made in other other areas like staffing.

I didn't say that families would not allow young people out on their own StripeyGran.
I said that they should be able to let their children go out in a carefree manner without concern.
You do know that the concerned father of the victim went calmly to Chelmsford prison to ask for an explanation. He refused to be interviewed because this is an emotionally charged situation for her family and others involved.

I have 2 relatives who wanted to join the prison service and the probation service but there were recruitment bans on both for a long time. Maybe this impacted things.
Stripeygran, I’m not sure why you think we shouldn’t go out. I am just amazed that there should be such a cock up in this day and age where there is a decent database and each prisoner has a unique identifier number. However this isn’t a new thing I once transported a prisoner from a Cat C prison to a Cat D. When we got there, the new prison didn’t want him and the old prison didn’t want him. In the end the new prison took him because I threatened to call the newspapers and they didn’t want the embarrassment. This was over 30 years ago. Very little appears to have changed.

How do you accidentally release someone. How does that happen.

When the government’s contract out to a company like Serco, it’s quite easy 🤬
They can’t keep track of offenders on Tag. What hope with a violent dangerous criminal 😱

Honestly, any chance to have a go at the present government, and not checking facts first.

It's the fault of whoever made the mistake.

The prison is Government run, not by Servo.
The release was under the jurisdiction of the Home Office.

So yes, it is the fault of Government employees.

Allira Sat 25-Oct-25 16:08:37

Serco, sorry.
Autocorrect. I should check first.

Time the whole shebang got an overhaul I think we’d all agree.
Basics but done well would get my vote.

The Epping migrant accidentally released after sexually assaulting a girl tried “four or five times” to return to prison, it has been claimed.
According to the DT, an eyewitness said he saw prison staff repeatedly turn Hadush Kebatu away and direct him to Chelmsford railway station when he tried to re-enter.
A delivery driver, named only as Sim, told Sky News that he saw Kebatu come out of the prison saying, “Where am I going? What am I doing?” and loitering outside the building for around an hour and a half as he tried to find out where he should go
The driver said that Kebatu knew he should have been deported instead of being freed, but prison staff were “basically sending him away” and saying to him: “Go, you’ve been released, you go

You couldn’t make it up!

On the news tonight,
Well just have to get in with it!

growstuff Sat 25-Oct-25 17:52:03

This whole case makes Inspector Clouseau look competent!

Apparently, Kebatu said he wanted to return to Ethiopia. He must be the only asylum ever who wants to be deported, but has been told he can't be and that's he's free to go.

I wonder how good his English is. If it's not very good, he must be wondering what on earth is going on.

escaped Sat 25-Oct-25 18:00:10

Inspector Clouseau is rather busy in Paris at the moment growstuff, so he's no help!

I agree that Kebatub must be very confused, but as concerns his command of English, it was certainly good enough to make suggestive comments to a couple of females in Epping. 🤔

escaped Sat 25-Oct-25 18:01:01

Sorry, Kebatu - misspelling.

petra Sat 25-Oct-25 18:01:54

He will have a story to tell when he gets home.
Trouble being, no one will believe him 😂

I was thinking the same kind of thing. I expect somebody is already planning to write a drama.
