What an absolute joke!

They deport him back to Ethiopia after accidentally releasing him from prison. They give him £500 to behave himself on the plane.

I imagine he is laughing the whole way home as will all his friends at how very stupid this country is.

I seem to recall the previous government paid £3,000 to people who agreed to fly to Rwanda.......

Please tell me you’re joking ….

Pantglas2 Wed 29-Oct-25 12:18:36

It’s one thing to finance a failed asylum seeker rehoming, another to be rewarding criminals surely?

Sago Wed 29-Oct-25 12:23:51

That will pay for him to get a flight back.

So - a hissy fit results in some pocket money. How soon before he is back again? It certainly pays

How many 3?

The current government cancelled Rwanda, that’s in the past.

Did they not collect back the £76 or whatever it was they gave him last week? 😆

He did! He said he would kick off on the flight to Ethiopia despite having 5 security men guarding him.

What a stupid, stupid thing to do giving him £500. In future anybody being deported (and Labour say there will be plenty of them) will be threatening to do the same if they don’t get a cash payment. You quite honestly could not make this up!

Paid removals are normal under the Facilitated Returns Scheme, with foreign nationals who agree to leave the UK being given £1,500.

"Forcible" returns do not usually involve payments, but removal teams can decide to make a discretionary payment to ensure things go smoothly.

I despair of this country.

You mean an illegal migrant, and why is it acceptable?

sundowngirl Wed 29-Oct-25 13:50:17

If, as Labour have claimed, 35,000 have been deported in the last year, how many were 'forcibly' returned and how much have we given them to 'rehome'?

How may have made their way back again?

Primrose53 Wed 29-Oct-25 13:52:27

Another asylum seeker jailed for life today after stabbing to death a devoted family man in a bank in Derby.

" He said he would kick off on the flight to Ethiopia ".

Not quite.

The reported risk was that he could disrupt the deportation order by making a legal challenge involving further expense to the taxpayer ; court time, judge, lawyers, all while he spent more time in prison at £1000 a week. Spinning it out as long as he could.

That would have cost us far more than £500,

Not what I heard.

Where did you hear your version, Primrose?

Primrose53 Wed 29-Oct-25 15:06:55

Maremia

Where did you hear your version, Primrose?

The earliest reports just said he was threatening “to disrupt his deportation”. It was much later in the day when it was explained in more detail.

It’s bonkers because he had actually pleaded to be sent back to Ethiopia so why give him any money at all? He got what he wanted!

Maremia Wed 29-Oct-25 15:15:56

Thank you Primrose.
Does that now make butterjam's version more accurate?

eazybee Wed 29-Oct-25 15:53:28

The BBC website said he was threatening to disrupt his deportation. It is the word 'threatening' that gives rise to alarm.

This is a prisoner convicted of a sexual assault, who is able to dictate the terms, and cost, of his deportation.

JenniferEccles Wed 29-Oct-25 15:58:40

This is unbelievable isn’t it?
This individual, the one who sexually assaulted a child in Essex had threatened to disrupt his deportation, so he was paid £500 not to make a fuss on the flight.

Arrangements should have been put in place to make damn sure he got on the plane and behaved.

What is the matter with us?

“It is one thing financing a failed asylum seeker rehoming”

No, I differentiate between an asylum seeker in our country (however they arrived) and a convicted criminal.

eazybee Wed 29-Oct-25 17:34:43

You said a failed asylum seeker, which means he is an illegal migrant, which is why he is being rehomed.
It is not right for him to be funded to return home when he should not have travelled here in the first place.

windmill1 Wed 29-Oct-25 17:35:12

He'll use the £500 to fund a return trip to Calais and the whole pantomime will start all over again.

Fflaurie Wed 29-Oct-25 18:14:18

He’ll come back and receive another £500 to leave,
and the Winter fuel allowance is means tested.
