Will the Israeli government be investigated for war crimes?

"A classified report by a U.S. government watchdog has found that Israeli military units committed “many hundreds” of potential violations of U.S. human rights law in the Gaza Strip that would take the State Department “multiple years” to review, according to two U.S. officials who relayed the details to The Washington Post.

The findings by the State Department’s Office of Inspector General mark the first time a U.S. government report has acknowledged the scale of Israeli actions in Gaza that fall under the purview of Leahy Laws, the landmark legislation that bars U.S. security assistance to foreign military units credibly accused of gross human rights abuses.

U.S. officials, who discussed details of the report on the condition of anonymity because the contents were classified, said the watchdog findings raised doubts about the prospects for accountability for Israel’s actions given the large backlog of incidents and the nature of the review process, which is deferential to the Israel Defense Forces."

The above was taken from today's Washington Post. tbh I don't think Netanyahu or anyone else will be properly investigated, what do you think?

Very unusual set-up and I watched a channel (usually an "intelligent" one at that!!) yesterday where he was honestly saying "Look - there've been lots of other countries besides Palestine that have had some other lot just take it over at some point because they wanted it. You are the only ones fighting back - why don't you just follow the trend and just give in and let the invaders walk over you. Everyone else does..." and I was gobsmacked at his attitude.

Admitted I'm someone who fights back at a personal level - my neighbours could soon tell you I will NOT allow trespassing in my garden and won't stop until I've stopped it. So I understand the Palestinians fighting back and goodness knows they're only trying to fight to keep what is still theirs - and not even fighting to get back what has been stolen off them to date.

Quite a situation - when one side is only trying to keep what is still theirs whilst the other side has their eyes on doing a "Greater Israel" and now household by household are moving in on Cyprus (which I gather they started doing during Lockdown - as the Lockdown wasn't enforced so strictly there and now they're trying to set up enclaves there for themselves/build synagogues etc.....)

So its' "take-over merchants" v. "ones who are just trying to keep what they still have - after so much of their country has been stolen off them".

I think if there hadn't been so much opposition and condemnation from other countries Israel would have done what they planned and 'cleansed' Gaza of all Palestinians.
They have made Gaza into a wasteland inhospitable for human life. If it's ever rebuilt I don't believe the Palestinians will be living in the homes and businesses that will be there. What's left of them will be left in camps far away from the new buildings.

Smileless2012 Sat 01-Nov-25 09:19:30

There's still time for them to accomplish that AGAA4.

That's true. Very sad.

Not often there is any 'heart warming ' news from Gaza, but reports and photos the other day, of babies born in safety and comfort at a now functioning hospital.
Hope the facility stays safe from random bombings.

“What could Hamas do to deal with Israel”

Invade their country, rape, lock families in their homes and burn alive. Burn babies to death. Attack music festivals and shoot to kill.
Take hostages back to Gaza from Israel, even children .

And adhere to their beliefs to ‘kill all Jews’

You do know the IDF owned up to attacking the music festival themselves? Also The Israelis finance Hamas in order to make a Palestinian stae impossible. This is also admitted by Netanyahu.

Jaberwok Mon 03-Nov-25 16:41:32

The IDF most certainly did not initiate the attack on the music festival, it did however mistakenly kill some party goers during the chaos. But at no time was that intentional, and to suggest otherwise is simply not true. The intention of Hamas is well known, that is, to kill every Jew on the planet. I think if I was a Jew, particularly living in Israel, I might feel just a bit uncomfortable about that so called government living next door!!

There can be a future for Gaza without Hamas.
The people of Gaza must not be kept in thrall to Israel, just in case.
They are entitled to a their own future, citizenship, same as everyone else.

Jaberwok Mon 03-Nov-25 17:27:08

If as seems likely there will eventually be elections in Gaza, how can anybody stop Hamas putting up candidates and them being voted back into power? Perhaps even reinventing themselves to get round any boycott. It would be impossible, especially long term. No wonder Israel is twitchy.

Maremia Mon 03-Nov-25 17:34:50

The Facebook ad has just come up again. It's a Save the Children maternity facility in Gaza, financed by world wide donations.

Maremia Mon 03-Nov-25 17:36:46

Of course there will be elections in Gaza, but part of the 'deal', supported by other States in the area, was that Hamas will not be part of a new government.

CariadAgain Mon 03-Nov-25 18:01:23

That may not be the worlds most realistic idea to expect that Hamas wouldnt be part of any new government that happens. If they don't take part in it as Hamas - they'll possibly do so under some other banner. Even somewhere more civilised (like Britain) has people quite deliberately standing under a different banner than the one they really belong under - I've had it put to me as a serious idea - ie to stand pretending to be a different party to what I was....and this is Britain. It happens......and I'm sure they know it does..

Whatever happens Netanyahu and his ilk will make excuse after excuse to continue the war - they've kept it up for over 70 years so far after all. Unfortunately I can't see them finishing it and acting logical/humane/etc any time soon. Though it would be nice to be proven wrong. The only blessing is with that xx character being in a human body = there will come an end to him personally at some point - as no-one can live for ever...no matter how evil they are. But someone like him might/probably will take over from him.

They are just a very warlike (would-be) nation. They're after Greater Israel. They're making moves (on an individual basis) in Cyprus. Personally - I wash my hands of them all (most of them - as there are some of them demonstrating against all this war....but most of them.....hmm..).

AGAA4 Mon 03-Nov-25 18:44:14

A top Israeli lawyer has leaked a video showing abuse on detained Palestinians. She has been arrested.

More proof that Israel can't claim to be a civilised country.

Allsorts Mon 03-Nov-25 18:45:38

I don't think its over yet.

Maremia Tue 04-Nov-25 14:42:24

I didn't really follow what was happening with that AGAA4.
Confused about why she leaked it.
But, it's out in the world now.

Maremia Tue 04-Nov-25 14:42:58

What is happening in Cyprus, Cariad?

I think she must have intended to leak it. Not all Israelis are happy with what their government are doing and perhaps brutality to detainees was too much for her.

Maremia Tue 04-Nov-25 15:47:35

Thanks. So by revealing the truth, she is now the accused.

Israel many never answer in the courts for the crimes it has committed, but it answers to world opinion.

It will never recover the standing it once had with many millions of people and states.

I absolutely agree.

If some of the responsible government ministers were tried for war crimes, & jailed, it might help to rehabilitate Israel in the eyes of many.

Of course what would really help is an Israeli government committed to peace, and an autonomous Palestinian state. And not just lip-service & kicking it as many years as possible down the road as Israel have done during past peace initiatives.

I am aware of the difficulties, but it's not impossible if & when Israel accept that a two state solution is the only just solution.

windmill1 Tue 04-Nov-25 16:12:18

Nothing will happen while HRH Donald Trump is in the White House. Netanyahu has his cartè blanche protection.

silverlining48 Tue 04-Nov-25 16:25:48

In answer to Maremia many Israelis are moving to Cyprus and also buying up large chunks of land, in both south and north Cyprus , which is where the Muslim majority live.
Cyprus is being referred to as Israel’s back yard.

Maremia Tue 04-Nov-25 17:48:23

Interesting, thanks.

Maremia - I put up a link - which has been censored off! - but there are a noticeable number of videos on YouTube with titles to the effect of "Why Israelis are buying up Cyprus".

So one of them reported it! But you should be able to find some to view them and find out the facts for yourself and form your own opinion on this aspect.
