Just thought it should be acknowledged here.

I'm hoping, for the sake of America that this is the start of something better for both the Democrats and the ordinary people..

Oreo

I got more interested as it went along but it still doesn’t impact us here in the UK who or what the Mayor of NY is.

I still think the view that we in the UK will follow what is happening in NYC a strange one as we were there first!
😁

Oreo Thu 06-Nov-25 11:13:42

Very true!
A Labour Muslim Mayor of London.

Allira Thu 06-Nov-25 11:16:31

I posted that earlier but it got overlooked, I think.

London leads, NYC follows!
🙂

Casdon Thu 06-Nov-25 11:18:41

I don’t think that it is relevant that the mayor is a Muslim, , other than indicating that New Yorkers want major change, which he offers. What is relevant it is the fact that the USA is turning on the Trump empire, NEW York’s decision is one example of what is happening in the USA right now. Of course it impacts on the UK, but for those who aren’t interested, just scroll on by, plenty of us are,

Trump is the President for the next four years regardless and nothing else impacts us here in the UK.
I wouldn’t be so quick to think recent votes for Mayor or other positions is the US turning against Trump but even if they are it doesn’t affect his position until the next Presidential election.
It may be relevant in NY that the Mayor is Muslim or may just be that his opposite number Cuomo was a poor choice that people just didn’t want.

Casdon Thu 06-Nov-25 11:26:50

The midterms in 2026 could change the makeup of congress Oreo, which will prevent Trump from delivering what he wants to. That’s why it’s so important.

Oreo Thu 06-Nov-25 11:32:28

Nothing will change his position tho, which is what matters to us.We have to be diplomatic and keep him onside.

I agree, Casdon, it is not relevant. Religion should not come into politics (although it does, of course!).

However, he himself made a point of it.

Allira Thu 06-Nov-25 11:38:51

Just to add, Sadiq Khan does not make a point of his faith at all.

Perhaps they do things differently over there.

Galaxy Thu 06-Nov-25 11:41:42

I don't think religion or colour should come into political positions, it makes me uneasy as I think it is so divisive.

I agree.

Perhaps he shouldn't have included that as part of his speech.

Sir Sadiq Khan, congratulating Zohran Mamdani on his win, wrote in Time magazine:

'Sir Sadiq said: "The fact that both cities now have mayors who are also Muslim is extraordinary, but - in two of the most diverse cities on Earth - it's a bit beside the point.

"We did not win because of our faith. We won because we addressed voters' concerns, rather than playing on them," he said.'

NotSpaghetti Thu 06-Nov-25 11:48:31

I agree with Casdon and Allira
I think his religion is irrelevant.

Allira Thu 06-Nov-25 11:52:16

The trouble is, he's got Trump to contend with.

But he does have age, brains and charisma on his side!

Maremia Thu 06-Nov-25 12:12:24

And I guess he can tell the difference between the image of a camel and a giraffe 🦒

The problem is that identity politics has always been part of the scene in the US. New York Jews have traditionally voted Democrat. Apparently, the split is usually 70/30. Exit polls this time show that Mamdani has retained about 30% of the Jewish vote. There needs to be further research to know whether concerns about the cost of living etc were more important than Mamdani's stance on Israel and Netanyahu. Many Orthodox Jews are against the war and Netanyahu anyway.

It will be interesting to see whether Mamdani tries to reconcile his Jewish constituents.

Allira Thu 06-Nov-25 13:02:14

I think religion does play more of a part in US politics.

Susieq62 Thu 06-Nov-25 13:04:26

Maremia where did you see that Bradford is the most dangerous city ? I live in a suburb of the city, went to the theatre in central Bradford yesterday, caught the train home, taught in the city for 30 years, use Waterstones regularly, still alive! I am curious as to where this suggestion came from?

Galaxy Thu 06-Nov-25 13:13:07

I think identity politics plays a part anywhere at the moment, I think it is on the wane here thank goodness, but it still pops his head up, Lammys recent comments for example.

I agree that it's been playing a more important role in UK politics in recent years. Personally, I really dislike it. In the US, it's been a given for decades. The two parties have been able to rely on blocs of voters.

DaisyAnneReturns Thu 06-Nov-25 14:01:32

Maremia

Probs is Daisy, some folk have deeply held views, that do not stand up to scrutiny.
But it is their right to post, and in the same way, for others to disagree.

It is their/our right to post Marmia but if it doesn't, as you put it so we'll, "stand-up to scrutiny" and they don't offer any evidence, why complain that people don't agree?

Also in reply to Allira's Strange, really, when overseas posters are regularly told they have no right to be posting views on UK politics. I've never seen that happen.

Mamdani, the Democratic nominee in the mayoral race, secured 50.4% of the vote, while former New York governor Andrew Cuomo (who lost to Mamdani in the Democratic primary) won 41.6% of ballots cast. Republican Curtis Siwa got 7.1% of the vote, but at least he can go home and hang out with his six cats (he used to have 18).

The new mayor plans to make buses free, set up a network of low-cost, city-owned grocery stores, and raise the Big Apple’s minimum wage to $30 by 2030; funding for those changes will come from tax hikes on corporations and millionaires.

Allira Thu 06-Nov-25 14:37:10

Sounds good.

What kinds of tax hikes?
What taxes can a USA mayor impose?
It sounds as if they have quite extensive powers

Maremia Thu 06-Nov-25 15:43:03

Really simple Sue. One of the Posters upthread said that London was the phone theft capital, did it say 'of the world'?
Anyway, I had a wee Google, and various places were the capital for this and the capital for that.
But the one that gobsmacked me was that claim, on Google, about Bradford.
The post didn't go into facts or figures or any sort of reasoning. Just presented as a bare 'fact'.
Just goes to show you.
Wonder if it was an AI malfunction?
Wouldn't put me off visiting.

Susieq62 Thu 06-Nov-25 16:25:09

Maremia thanks for the update! It isn’t the best place in the country but there are plenty of lovely areas in the vicinity to visit !
