Just thought it should be acknowledged here.

I'm hoping, for the sake of America that this is the start of something better for both the Democrats and the ordinary people..

And two Democrat state governors elected, Virginia and New Jersey.

Well done to them and Mamdani.

Trump will not be pleased

Will NYC end up the drug infested basket case that is socialist Los Angeles? Tech bros moved out to Florida as crime was rampant in Silicone Valley.

Time will tell I suppose.

Oreo Wed 05-Nov-25 08:49:32

Do we normally acknowledge here who the Mayor of NY is?
Can’t think why.

Jaxjacky Wed 05-Nov-25 08:57:15

I was keeping an eye on it, well done to Mamdani, now the work begins.

NotSpaghetti Wed 05-Nov-25 08:57:29

Don't join in then Oreo

Can’t think why.

It’s a very big issue politically. Trump has called Mamdani a communist and threatened to cut off funding for NYC if he’s elected.

I might just start writing "ignored as I feel spammed by this level of propoganda", in reply to this sort of post, because that is all they are. Would Gransnet allow that?

However to the facts. Although LA does face big challenges with homelessness and addiction, as many large cities do, it is not socialist. Its economy is capitalist and extremely productive. It’s a complex mix of serious social issues and major global success.

It's been fascinating watching Mamdani. What can Labour learn from this do you think?

Thanks for a polite answer Witzend
I just wondered if GN always acknowledged who the new Mayor of NY was and why, as it doesn’t affect us here in the UK in the slightest.

Trump blusters a lot, that was just him doing the usual threatening act to get what he wanted.

NotSpaghetti Wed 05-Nov-25 09:36:42

I'm sorry Oreo if you thought I was rude.

I suppose just because we may not have seen such positivity for a while.

He's been elected on housing, and transport and a NY that is thete for everyone- not just the wealthy I think.

"In this moment of political darkness," Mamdani said, "New York will be the light."

Let's hope so. 🤞

Hmmm, I have read some of the promises and aspirations Mamdani has, and while not doubting his sincerity and charisma, they sound pie in the sky, sort of the reverse of Reform but attracting the same kind of fed up people who are prepared to hope and believe for pie in the sky.

We have seen what has happened with Reform whenfaced with reality in power, away go the cuts in expenditure, up goes counil tax. I wonder whether the same will happento Mamdani once on power, it will not be possible to control rents, raise the minimum wage as much as he hopes and the New Jersey governor will put the kibosh on a wealth tax.

of course I hope everything goes well and he achieves everything he promised. i just do not think he will be able to do it.

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 05-Nov-25 09:54:36

The vote for the Republican candidate was 7% I believe. This is, surely, a message for Mr Trump.
He will be seeking revenge - it's what he does.

NotSpaghetti Wed 05-Nov-25 09:58:46

M0nica - if he can make an impact on just one thing reasonably quickly (say, transport) that will make a big difference.

The good news is that the Dems did very well yesterday Down ballot. It seems as though people have had enough of Trump and Republicans on this side of the pond. I watched the MAGA school board candidates get sent packing yesterday. On our own district, we were able to block both Moms for Liberty backed candidates. Bye! Your hate has no place here.

And who cares, right now, if he does have pie in the sky dreams. Our other option is fascism. We will take whatever wins we can get.

A chink of light in the march of the Trump agenda in the USA, not just in New York. I hope he takes note and rolls back on his more extreme plans at least.

LaCrepescule Wed 05-Nov-25 10:20:15

That’s very small-minded Oreo. We acknowledge it because this is good news for the world, not only America.
There is a dangerous despot in charge of a very powerful nation and that has implications for us all.

Oh you never know. It’s too early to tell.
It could yet be A Triumph for Trump (or Vance).
This new Mayor might bring chaos to New York - which the rest of the USA will note.

Yes I get that.

His life will be made as difficult as possible by Trump, largely by funds being cut.

He may be what the democrats need though. He is charismatic and likeable.

There are other wins though and California approving re-districting looks positive.

New Jersey - democrat win.

Irvin is - democrat win.

Maremia Wed 05-Nov-25 11:18:05

You mean because it is all going so well for the USA just now?

Maremia Wed 05-Nov-25 11:19:13

Good news imaround. I see that the Florida candidate won as well.

Maremia Wed 05-Nov-25 11:20:57

yes, some of us are interested.

Having now read about the new Mayor am not too sure he’s a good thing to happen at all.He appears to think that everything that’s wrong with the world are rich people and Israel ( and Jews in general no doubt) which will just add to the antisemitic tropes.
His policies seem as extreme left as Zack Polanski is, and just as pie in the sky radical.
Actually am far more worried about the Greens rise in popularity added to Reforms rise in popularity more than anything else.
