New asylum rules

^Under the plans, asylum seekers will be returned home if their country is deemed safe, most will have to wait 20 years to apply to settle permanently, with deportations sped up when claims are rejected.
I’d like to know,
Who decides when and if a country is safe?
What do you think.

Sorry to hear of more suspensions and banning, I will miss them. growstuff has been here for a long time, and knows her onions, I hope she is reinstated.

I’m with GrannyGravy13 on reporting, I always say if I have done it. In my opinion it should be used very lightly - and I think it would be if the reporter was named. At the moment, banning and suspensions are inconsistent, because people can report silently, and some people are more trigger happy than others, so some posts are not reported although worse than some that result in banning and suspension.

*Confrontational is another persons challenge*

If I wanted a challenge I’d put myself forward for the London Marathon.
I don’t want a challenge - I just want to chat ( occasionally ) about political issues calmly.
Growstuff was a poster who stopped me from coming on here. Her posting style was just too aggressive. I’m sure she’s lovely in real life but she did come across as very angry.

Pretty much how I feel. I hate being treated like a school child which often happens on here. Recently I was accused of doing something on here which I have never done and never would do although the person accusing me does it herself! I asked for proof of my misdemeanour or an apology but neither appeared and I got a bossy reply. That is not how mature, intelligent women should behave on a forum.

I have had several PMs on this occasion and in the past about how confrontational some people are and how it has stopped others from joining in with discussions because they feel intimidated. Several people have suggested that it is because some members have extremely strong political opinions and will not even try to listen to other opinions. I suggested the other day that both main parties might work together but that went down like a lead balloon.

I think the mods do a pretty good job actually considering what a busy site it is. Just to repeat what I said in a previous post I did not report anybody on this thread.

I don't really want that to be honest. I have reported trolls who have started very weird threads often involving children, I certainly don't want it identified that I reported them.

Data from the Department for Work and Pensions show that 112,000 people with refugee status were claiming Universal Credit in December 2024, equivalent to 66% of the adults with refugee status.7 hours ago

This is unsurprising as they are unable to work.

It helps if people are able to differentiate between what asylum seekers can't do, and what people granted refugee status can.

Is this because you feel you might be targeted by them?

On the other hand, regular posters aren't really troll like, are they? I suppose it would be asking too much to get Gnet to discriminate between trolls and regular posters.

I think something must be done as it is getting so toxic and unpleasant.

It certainly isn’t working properly at the moment.

Galaxy Thu 20-Nov-25 21:20:39

I would just feel uncomfortable about it. To be honest this discussion has happened many times over the years on both GN and MN, which is probably indicative that things aren't any better or worse than previously.

Iam64 Thu 20-Nov-25 21:29:49

It does feel toxic. Passive aggressive comments, underhanded attempts to silence people who express strong views you don’t share
No wonder many interesting posters are stroking back

Whitewavemark2 Thu 20-Nov-25 21:34:02

I certainly wouldn’t feel and don’t. Uncomfortable. I always without fail say I’ve reported someone which I could count on one hand tbh.

You have to have the guts to be honest.

I simply don’t think this secret reporting is working - it is simply causing more unpleasantness and suspicion - look at the poor posters feeling they have to deny it is them. It should never come to this.

Someone needs to get a grip in GN.

Galaxy Thu 20-Nov-25 21:41:24

I don't feel uncomfortable with the current situation at all. I have been on MN and GN for about 20 years, as I say this cycle happens again and again.

sue421 Thu 20-Nov-25 21:46:03

Time has come for this to be sorted out once and for all. The people off the boats are being conned into thinking this will be a better life. It can't be, we are struggling with our own problems. Are they true asylum seekers? I would like the people on these boats to be flown back to where they came from immediately. We have our own people to care for, plus true asylum seekers. So we give these boat people money to go back home, when our pensioners, NHS, Hospices need more funds. We have so many people sleeping on our streets, they should come first.

Oh, I've usually posted reported so other posters know.

Galaxy Thu 20-Nov-25 22:16:00

It depends what they are. If it is just the tedious spam ones I will do.

I agree, don’t know about this site but having been on MN for years this sort of argument goes round and round doesn’t it?
It’s not rocket science, stay within guidelines where possible, and tbh most of the time it is possible to do that.

I do think that at long last the government have realised that the government that sorts out the boats is the political party that will survive.

Iam64 Fri 21-Nov-25 07:16:07

Whichever party was in power would be trying to reduce the need for asylum seekers. It’s an increasingly difficult task with climate change and endless wars.
This government is reflecting what is inescapable, trying to act humanely whilst preventing people with no claim from arriving, staying

Maremia Fri 21-Nov-25 08:21:04

Yes Allira, I have noticed that you do that. Courage of your convictions,

Maremia Fri 21-Nov-25 08:22:13

If you have seen it happen before Galaxy, how does it 'pan out'? Do the 'Banned' come back?

Galaxy Fri 21-Nov-25 08:47:30

It depends if they are banned or suspended I suppose. But I can think of a number if people who didn't come back GSM for one. On MN a large section of posters changed their name to a version of a banned poster in solidaritygrin, it had no impact whatsoever.
