Tax coming for EV’s

I’ll be really interested in how this will be applied. I can’t think of a way 🤔

Well, the government is losing a lot of money from fuel tax so it has to be made up from somewhere.

It’s not the decision, it’s the practicalities that are exercising my thoughts.

There was a feature on the news this evening, garages will monitor mileage when they do MOTs, people can pay in advance annually by estimating how much mileage they will do, at the end of the year they will get a refund or pay extra depending on the accuracy of their estimate. For vehicles that don’t need an MOT because they are other three years old they can have their mileage checked at a garage free of charge. There was also mention of paying monthly by direct debit.

Martin Lewis did a budget special tonight, he said he has no idea how the government are going to implement this, and neither do they (still a work in progress)!

Sounds a lot of faffing about why not just put road tax on electric vehicles.

Gosh thst sounds complicated Jane. Especially the refunds bit.
Though I expect everyone will put in an underestimate.
And how will the difference be managed when the car is sold?

And presumably the Government will have to pay garages to do it for “free”.

Could end up costing more in administration than it raises ?

But if you increase the price of electricity the whole of the household electricity bill would increase.

I am surprised that EV owners are not spitting more feathers.

Surely they will just use the annual service records from the motor industry, as they already record mileage, and nearly everybody uses the brand garage for the first three years because of the warranty?

That may work for new cars but owners of second hand cars don’t always bother with services or may not bother to have a service fir a couple of years and then sell on.

So the third owner could find themselves liable for all that? Or will there be a compulsory garage visit once a year with garages submitting the mileage? Who’ll pay that charge? The garage, the customer, the Government? The DOVA to chase up?

Older cars routinely have the mileage recorded at MOT though Lathyrus, which presumably feeds through to the DVLA?

It was always on the cards that this would happen. They ( that’s any government) have left a decent amount of time before they announced the inevitable.

So pay a lump sum in retrospect based on mileage records by a certified garage applied yearly, like a licence fee.

Beginning to see my way through.

What about any mileage driven abroad? Would that be paid for too?

As EVs all have their own computer wizardry to drive the charging system, I wonder if the technology is already there to send mileage to DVLA?

Apparently it's such a small proportion.

Our app informs Peugeot of the mileage (kilometres in our case). We have also given permission for the insurance company to have data about our driving, which gives us a reduction for safe driving.
It also informs us of remaining range and allows us to pre heat the car on a cold morning. We do all our charging at home.
I have read that the 3p a mile will be by self declaration, but car owners will be well aware that the data is recorded.
I have no problem with the details of my driving being available. Why would I?

You could, of course, remove the app and rely on service checks and the MOT as suggested, but if an estimate is required then the app would make life much easier.

It would be far simpler to tax ALL vehicles regardless. They all cause wear to the roads after all.
