Tommy Robinson’s ‘put Christ back into Christmas’ message"
(431 Posts)I honestly couldnt believe what I was reading, except it follows a US trend for Far Right attempts to do the same.

"The Church of England is to launch a poster campaign aimed at challenging the anti-migrant message of Tommy Robinson, whose “Unite the Kingdom” movement has urged its supporters to join a carols event next weekend to “put the Christ back into Christmas”.
The posters, which will go on display at bus stops, say “Christ has always been in Christmas” and “Outsiders welcome”. They will also be available for local churches to download and display over the festive period."
At a march organised by Unite the Kingdom in September there was a significant presence of Christian symbols, including wooden crosses and flags bearing Christian slogans, as well as chants of “Christ is king” and calls to defend “God, faith, family, homeland
Last week, Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, announced next weekend’s Christmas carol event at an undisclosed outdoor venue in central London. It would mark the beginning of “a new Christian revival in the UK – a moment to reclaim and celebrate our heritage, culture and Christian identity”.
I find this truly, truly chilling
You?
(Some Christian activists are planning a counter-event to protest at the far-right views of those organising the carol service)..(do read the rest of the article)
I dont think it matters who the Dad was, actually. Jesus was born to Mary and led the life he did, gifting us with the change in religious thinking from a mainly judgemental and possibly often a punitive G/god, to one of Compassionate Love (as defined within the strictures of the time) - there are many key stories, one has to be the good Samaritan, as it is inclusive of diverse communities, another key one has to be the great significance of love - as we are told in Corinthians 1:13
the end half of it reads,
"4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love

It is if they don’t believe the major tenets of Christianity.

^a number of Church of England clergy doubt the account of the Miraculous Conception and Virgin birth^ so does anyone know what they see as being the alternative?
Do they agree with certain passages in the Talmot that mention the accusation that Mary had an affair with an unknown soldier resulting in her pregnancy, so Joseph agreed to marry her out of kindness?
Or do they believe that Joseph was the father? What other alternatives are there for anyone who doesn't believe in the virgin birth?
I don't think it is worth speculating, I'm a Catholic so obviously Mary is very special to us. Jesus was born, that is enough.
Oreo that is not your judgement to make.
Too late! I just made it.

I'm assuming they married before he converted, otherwise they had some hoops to jump through.

And it means nothing as you are not in a position to judge.
It means enough to me, and I’m not worried what anyone else thinks btw.

The Vicars won't be worried about what you think of their beliefs or if you think they aren't Christians as you don't actually decide who is a Christian.
I don't think it matters who the Dad was, actually really wyllow!!! I would think it would have mattered to Joseph.
There is no speculation if you believe what we're told in the Bible theworriedwell and Mary is special to all Christians.
‘I don’t think it matters who the Dad is’ 😄
The above….when talking of Jesus of Nazareth! I don’t think I have ever read something so eye popping in my life.

This is really bothering you isn’t it?😄

😁
Well, it does matter as that is at the basis of Christianity!!
This is beginning to sound like the school Nativity play as related by Gervaise Phinn.
Mary announces to Joseph "I'm having a baby - oh and it's not yours!"
Do Mary and Joseph still appear in school nativity plays? I’m looking forward to seeing my granddaughter as a snowflake and grandson as Mr Badger in their play …..

Went to a GS’s Nativity yesterday , they had the full cast, including King Herod, and multiple animals.
I haven't been to one since the DGD left primary school. They were so enjoyable and always seemed to have a funny moment when the audience had to keep their faces straight.
We haven't been to one since our boys were at primary school; great memories

I feel what matters is Jesus's life and work and way of being, not who his Dad is.
There are various historical theories but I don't believe in a Virgin birth.
I feel its possible to appreciate what he gave to the world without that.
Looking back, the whole, terrible, oppressive pressures over the centuries for women to be "pure" but not the men, came from the church, and it suited their narrative to have a "Virgin birth".
A virgin birth is simply - son of God , unless you believe differently
I feel what matters
Presumably you mean "What matters to me is"
What matters to others might be quite different from what you feel is important or true.
The Virgin birth is in the gospels of Matthew and Luke and has nothing to do with suiting the narrative of the church Wyllow, but perhaps it suits yours.
I really would be interested in knowing if anyone knows any ministers who don't believe in the Virgin birth, if they know what they do believe; they must have an alternative.
Saint Google says that most Protestants believe in the virgin birth but not all believe that Mary etained her virginity.
Unfortunately, Google did not go on to say which Protestant churches.
That might require a deeper search.
