Sorry - just seen Cabowich's thread.

Excellent news .
I'd have voted Labour purely on the basis of the original ban on Fox Hunting ( I think it was Tony Blair's government).
Great that they are tightening this up and lots of other great measures.

Jaberwok Mon 22-Dec-25 16:46:33

You're absolutely correct Iam64. My daughter's two Dachshunds, one a miniture, are totally obsessed with ratting and mousing on their smallholding! They try it here too in our woodshed and stableblock without too much success, but stopping them, apart from shutting doors and gaps is impossible, they are hunting dogs. Our cocker spaniel also, even on three legs is hot on the trail of any passing pheasants! Those hunts that wilfully break the law should be banned, others that obey the law should be allowed to continue. Knowing this government, it will be one out, all out. The hypocrisy is mindboggling.

Just wondering how this concern for animals will be effected when it comes to relaxing the planning laws with regard to 1.5 million new homes and renewable energy?

I’m part of a local group trying unsuccessfully to stop building on green belt. One of our arguments was about wild life

Maremia Mon 22-Dec-25 17:07:17

Glad about the farrowing crates. Not a life for any animal.

Jaberwok Mon 22-Dec-25 17:09:36

I'm afraid you will be unsuccessful , concern for wild life always seems to go out of the window when it ceases to be politically expedient. As I said, the hypocrisy is mind blowing!

Curlywhirly Mon 22-Dec-25 19:07:26

Brilliant news.

Grantanow Mon 22-Dec-25 19:19:41

All mostly a diversion from the failings of the present government. And I hope this doesn't mean hare is off the menu.

You can still enjoy seeing horses and hounds if you look for the nearest ‘clean boot’ hunt. They use bloodhounds to follow the scent of a human runner and the worst the hounds do is lick the human to death when found. They will not be distracted by a fox or any other creature.

I also note that the plan is to ban trail hunting, and not, as far as I know, drag hunting which uses an aniseed scent and not a scent which is animal based (usually fox urine).

The hunts have had plenty of time to adapt their practices and ensure they comply with the law, but they have continued to act as if they are above it. Hence they continue to use terrier men (for what?) and to train foxhounds using captive fox cubs. They’ve had this coming for a long time, although sadly I have my doubts that the government will follow through.

nightowl Mon 22-Dec-25 23:04:20

Just to add - drag hunts have existed since the 19th century, long before the hunting ban. Trail hunts emerged after the ban and have always been a cynical move to carry on business as usual.

Mollygo Mon 22-Dec-25 23:29:29

Unfortunately hounds do not differentiate between the trail laid and a fox scent along the way.
Very much like the government then.

It will be interesting to see the protection of wildlife in the light of the planning going on.

But not a word on Halal slaughter!!

sundowngirl Tue 23-Dec-25 14:51:08

Rosieroe

But not a word on Halal slaughter!!

They are worried they would lose too many votes. This government should be ashamed of itself not to include this in their 'animal welfare bill'. So they are not concerned about the welfare of ALL animals

Gummie Tue 23-Dec-25 15:40:41

Finally this government is doing something that I can approve of.

I always thought puppy farming was illegal. Learnt something there.

Anniebach Tue 23-Dec-25 15:56:43

Gummie read up on Lucy’s Law

Gummie read up on Lucy’s Law

no

Iam64 Tue 23-Dec-25 18:45:50

Gummie, those of us involved in dog rescues have learned so much, so distressing about puppy farming x

Anniebach Wed 24-Dec-25 19:10:40

Animal rights campaigners say the practice can lead to long-term health issues in puppies. It is not currently illegal to breed a large number of dogs. Breeders selling three or more litters a year in England, Wales and Northern Ireland must undergo an inspection to get a licence.

Iam64 Wed 24-Dec-25 19:48:54

The animal rights campaigners are correct. We have so many dogs with behavioural problems some linked to disgusting puppy farms

midgey Wed 24-Dec-25 20:06:47

I just wish imported eggs and bacon products from abroad were held to the same standards.

Halal slaughtering in industrial quantities needed in the UK is an abomination.

You should be equally worried about schechita slaughter
(kosher, for the Jewish market)

According to the RSPCA

Around 88% of animals slaughtered in the UK for Halal are stunned first.
All animals slaughtered under the Shechita (for Kosher) are non-stunned.

Susie42 Thu 25-Dec-25 12:13:31

I worked with a woman who hunted and she said it was a bonus if they even saw a fox while riding.

Smileless2012 Thu 25-Dec-25 14:50:29

Maybe she didn't see the fox they were chasing suffering from sheer exhaustion and fear Susie, which may well have died even though it was spared being ripped apart by the hounds.

Their escape roots and places of safety are blocked before the hunt begins. It's barbaric.

Anniebach Thu 25-Dec-25 15:41:24

Yes barbaric , I witnessed cubbing, caused me to vomit

Susie42 Fri 26-Dec-25 15:53:03

Smileless2012

My colleague meant the hunt in general rarely saw a fox, they just enjoyed the riding.
