Alaa Abdel Fallah was not subjected to a normal examination when applying for British citizenship because he claimed it through his mother who was born in London while her mother was studying for a PHD, one of the loopholes apparently of the Human Rights Law. Since becoming PM Starmer has avidly supported his case and welcomed him into Britain without running basic checks on his background.
Abdel has 'apologised unreservedly for his offensive racist tweets.'
This was followed however by:
"I am shaken that, just as I am being reunited with my family for the first time in 12 years, several historic tweets of mine have been republished and used to question and attack my integrity and values, escalating to calls for the revocation of my citizenship." BBC website, today.

I think that this is obviously a loophole which needs closing then!

His mother was born here when her parents were briefly here as students therefore she has dual nationality but she was brought up up Egypt where she became a professor at Cairo University and a political activist.

It would seem to be a tenuous reason for granting her son UK citizenship but, presumably, lawful.
This was changed in 1983 ^The requirement for a person to have a parent who is a British citizen by birth in the UK for automatic citizenship came into effect on January 1, 1983, with the implementation of the British Nationality Act 1981.^

It is a difficult one but I am sure where there is a will, there is a way. I'm not suggesting for one minute that people born here are denied citizenship but I do think when you haven't actually lived here, there should be due diligence before citizenship is granted. I also think there is an argument that young people often have different political views from their older selves but calling for the death of Jews, white people and blowing up Downing Street are more extreme than most.

Oh well last year as shadow whatever, he was, espousing disgust that this thing was in jail due to his social media posts. What a hypocrite and failure the pm is.

I think the media court Nigel Farage as they know he’s marmite to readers/viewers, likewise Zack Polanski. Both men have strong and controversial views.
Ed Davey is bland.

It doesn’t help that the news media seem to ask Farage and Tice for their opinion on everything, as if they are a government in waiting. I’m sure that we’re much safer with a Labour government than we would ever be with a ( heaven help us) Reform one.

There are just five Reform MPs and yes, the media seems to need to ask Farage's opinion all the time.

There are 72 Lib Dem MPs but do we hear them asking for Ed Davey's opinion? Not as often.

There are just four Green MPs and we hear more from Zack Polanski than the Lib Dems too.

Many people including MP’s, and yes even Labour MP’s at times have tweeted antisemitic comments a few or many years ago.
This case of the Egyptian man granted British citizenship (why?) at age 40 has had successive governments and celebs rooting for him when he has written he hates white people especially British, Dutch and German ones, hates Zionists and Jews and called the British (us) dogs and monkeys.
Yvette Cooper now saying nobody knew!! Not even the FO apparently, does Frank Spencer run things there?

Farage didn’t write them on SM as far as I know.They were things he allegedly said so we will never know exactly what he said when a teenager.

It is in writing though. A copy of a letter written at the time by his teacher expressing her concerns about his views is still in existence.

The Telegraph is well known for its ‘widespread puzzlement’ at anything the current government does. Perhaps it needs to employ some more erudite reporters?

It is risible to argue, for example, that the law granted el-Fattah citizenship, not the then-home secretary. That is the whole point: our laws do not protect us properly, and the failure to deal with that is politicians’ failure. The responsibility and the blame lies with them.

The Telegraph seems to put the blame here on that Tory Home Secretary and on politicians in general.

The judiciary upholds the laws but the politicians make them.
